An introduction and guide to the computer program FAST-3D

    No full text
This manual describes the comuter program FAST-3D (Flow Analysis Simulation Tool of 3-Dimensions) developed at the Institute for Hydromechanics, University of Karlsruhe, for calculating three-dimensional, incompressible, steady, elliptic flows with complex boundaries. A special version of the program for two-dimensional plane or axisymmetric flows is described in Zhu (1991b). The program is written in the FORTRAN language. FAST-3D uses a finite-volume method numerically to solve the partial differential equations. The method has the following main features: use of the conservation form of the governing equations, non-orthogonal boundary-conforming grids, colocated (non-staggered) variable arrangement, Cartesian velocity components instead of grid-aligned velocity components, the SIMPLE algorithm (Patankar and Spalding, 1972) to handle the pressure-velocity coupling, the momentum interpolation procedure of Rhie and Chow (1983) to avoid spurious oscillations usually encountered with the non-staggered grid, four convection differencing schemes - hybrid central/upwind differencing (Spalding, 1972), QUICK (Leonard, 1979), SOUCUP (Zhu and Rodi, 1991) and HLPA (Zhu, 1991a), the strongly implicit procedure of Stone (1968) for solving the system of algebraic difference equations, and a high degree of vectorization. Turbulence is simulated by the standard k-#epsilon# model (Launder and Spalding, 1974). The details of the method are given in Peric (1985) and Majumdar et al. (1990). Untersuchung des instationaeren Verhaltens der Grenzschichten an Turbinenschaufeln. Bd. 2 Programmbeschreibung PIGAT

    No full text
PIGAT is a computer program for the calculation of two-dimensional, periodically unsteady flows in cascade tunnels. The program permits simulating the passage of the wakes generated by a preceding blade row through the stator and rotor ducts as well as simulating the influence of these wakes on the unsteady boundary layer development and on heat transfer. The program incorporates a model which, using empirical wake correlations for a given rotor/stator configuration, describes the unsteady distributions of flow parameters in the inflow plane of the blade row to be calculated. The flow equations within the domain are solved numerically by means of a flexible finite volume method while using geometry adapted H-grids. The overall program package also contains a method for generating such grids. The turbulent exchange processes are simulated by means of a two-layer turbulence model, using the #kappa#-#epsilon# model in the core region and a single equation model in the near-wall region. This volume compiles the model equations and describes the PIGAT program package in detail. The results of calculations and the comparison with experimental data are given in the final report (Edition 494-1(1992)). The PIGAT computer program was developed for the calculation of two-dimensional, periodically unsteady flows in cascade tunnels. The program permits simulating the passage of the wakes generated by a preceding blade row through the stator and rotor ducts as well as simulating the influence of the wakes on the unsteady boundary layer development and on heat transfer. This final report describes the approach to program development and outlines the essential features of the program, presents test calculations of individual components of the numerical model in simple flow geometries and, finally, the verification of the method by recalculation of some grid experiments conducted in a partner project. The calculations for the wake passage through the cascade ducts, the boundary layer development and heat transfer are compared with measurement results. All told, the correlation is good, even if not all details of the complex flow situation can be described exactly in terms of quantity. A detailed description of the PIGAT program is contained in Edition 494-2(1992).
