The effective strategy ensuring the European metallurgical concerns a competitive position on the market must be based on the risk analysis and assessment, both connected with the influencing external and internal factors. In the study one has proposed the algorithm of systemic management with the risk of threats and opportunities, covering the risk value assessment with the application of the matrix method as well as the acceptability assessment based on the individual criteria. The developed methodology one has applied for the chosen factors representing the threats and possibilities for realizing the aims of the metallurgical processes. The comparison of the assessment results of both: risk connected with the threats and risk of possibilities, should be of systemic character and constitute the base for the decisions within the scope of risk taking actions

Metallurgical processes safety in the context of machinery and other legal requirements

In the metallurgical processes, due to the amount and meaning of the workplace safety threats, there is a necessity of implementing the steps connected with their elimination or limitation. Undertaking the steps should be based on the identified legal requirements and the risk refraining from lack of the compliance. The most meaningful, within the mentioned scope, are the requirements concerning design, construction and use of the machines. The aim of the presented study was identification of the essential requirements stated to the machinesā€™ manufacturers, minimal requirements dedicated to the work equipmentā€™ users. One has pointed the potential risk of lack of compliance and described the ways of taking up such a risk depending on the identified legal requirements

Determination of the key operational features in the steel continuous casting processes

The processes of continuous steel casting should be realized in a way ensuring obtaining the designed quality properties of the cast. The basis of the balanced development, however, cause that the tendencies toward the continuous casting improvement are directed toward the minimizing its negative influence on the environment. The subject of the analysis is, considering the risk assessment, identification of the key-operational-features in the continuous casting process. The proposed methodology is of the utilitarian characteristics and can find the application in each organization which due to the operational monitoring wants to eliminate the defects and the environmental impacts within the realized processes

Emergency preparedness and response in metallurgical processes

The main aim of the presented paper is to feature the operational model of the emergency preparedness and response. It is based on the risk analysis and allows for fulfillment of the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 norms. The model in question represents the base of the real aimsā€™ unification within the range of proceeding in case of the metallurgical processesā€™ failures

Steel mills, due to the used chemical substances of combustible, toxic and explosive properties as well as because of the many other threats to the environment, human and property ā€“ must ensure the industrial safety. Therefore, it should cover actions minimising the occurrence probability and limiting the importance of threats and their effects. In the study, one has presented the scheme of solutions within the range of safe realisation of the processes and loss prevention, concerning both: technical aspects of used technological and measurement control devices as well as the organisational aspects of processes realisation. For the chosen threats one has proposed actions for prevention, protection and limitation realised as technological and organisational layers of protection, which can be applied in the regular conditions as well as during dangerous event

Environmental assessment of the hot-dip galvanization processes

Processes of the hot-dip galvanization, refraining from application of dangerous chemical substances together with the necessity of ensuring the high temperatures, both pose a special threat to the environment. Therefore, the subject of analysis was environmental impact of the hot-dip galvanization process. Here has been done the identification and the assessment of the environmental aspects as well as has been pointed at the key-aspects requiring the special supervision. The developed assessment methodology can be applied by each of the organization wanting to master the processes by minimizing their environmental influence

As a consequence of technological accidents regular conditions of metallurgical processes can change into operational discontinuity. For that reason the main aim of the paper is to present a concept of the risk based process safety assurance. It is directed at the arrangement of the supervised processes realization resulting in prevention and minimization of uncontrolled damages to employeesā€™ health and environmental pollution. The fundaments of the described concept is risk management and systemic approach required by guidelines of: environmental and occupational management systems as well as Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) management system. The exemplary actions of the risk based process safety assurance in metallurgical production are presented

The main aim of the paper is to characterize the proposed model of risk management system. Threats identification and risk assessment of the systemic character result in taking action directed on risk elimination, minimization or financing. Concept of the risk management system includes the following anti-risk activities concerning: knowledge, operating, experience and improvement. Those risk actions guarantee effective manner of risk management, which is of particular meaning due to the difficult situation of the European Unionā€™s steel industry facing geopolitical, economic and environmental challenges. The model in question can be treated as a guidelines for proceeding in case of prevention and response to the potential, both strategic and operational, metallurgical risk
