How Can UDL Be Used To Increase Equity And Access At An Abe Site?

    Get PDF
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been shown to reduce barriers through all levels of education. Similarly, there is research showing the effectiveness of UDL to increase equity and inclusion. Given the diverse population of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and the overrepresentation of students with a learning disability, UDL makes sense as a curriculum shift. The professional development project was designed to give ABE teachers tools for implementing UDL that can be used in various classroom settings, regardless of course level or area of study, so that there can be consistency across all classes at an ABE site rather than only by an individual teacher or individual class. Drawing inspiration from books and websites related to UDL, the professional development training focuses on concepts that are already being used within ABE, engaging teachers to recognize UDL, and solidifying it into one curriculum concept regardless of subject area. The professional development can be replicated utilizing the materials provided along with suggestions on how to personalize it for individual sites

Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Case Study: A Tale of Two Schools

    Get PDF
This study concerns the effects of public school redistricting on communities in Atlanta. It is based upon interviews with people in two neighborhoods which are part of the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) system directly affected by redistricting. All schools slated to close are located in low-income, minority areas and serve similar populations. Of the ten schools selected for closing, three were saved during the final APS board meeting in April 2012, and will remain open. I spoke with people who reside in a neighborhood where a local school is slated to close, as well as those in an area where a school was saved from closing. I asked informants why they felt their schools were identified for closure and how they responded to the threat of closing. I learned that both communities organized to save their schools but with different results based on available forms of social and cultural capital
