Extracción en fase sólida de β-sitosterol y α-tocoferol de destilados de aceite de girasol desodorizado utilizando zeolita desilicada
In this study, the efficiency of using zeolite-based adsorbents in a solid phase extraction (SPE) procedure of α-tocopherol and β-sitosterol isolation from Sunflower Oil Deodorizer Distillate (SuDOD) without pre-treatment was investigated. The results showed that 99.2% α-tocopherol and 97.3% β-sitosterol were successfully isolated as pure fractions from SuDOD, when desilicated ZSM-5-type zeolite (DSiZSM-5) was used as adsorbent on a SPE. A simple and rapid HPLC method for simultaneous α-tocopherol and β-sitosterol analysis was developed and validated according to AOAC guidelines. It was found that the inclusion of a DSiZSM-5 SPE step increased the precision of the α-tocopherol and β-sitosterol analysis. In conclusion, DSiZSM-5 zeolite was proven to be an efficient adsorbent which can be used not only for the recovery of α-tocopherol and β-sitosterol from SuDOD in industrial scale, but also in a laboratory scale clean-up method prior to the analysis of α-tocopherol and β-sitosterol.
Relational Prior Knowledge Graphs for Detection and Instance Segmentation
Humans have a remarkable ability to perceive and reason about the world around them by understanding the relationships between objects. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of using such relationships for object detection and instance segmentation. To this end, we propose a Relational Prior-based Feature Enhancement Model (RP-FEM), a graph transformer that enhances object proposal features using relational priors. The proposed architecture operates on top of scene graphs obtained from initial proposals and aims to concurrently learn relational context modeling for object detection and instance segmentation.Experimental evaluations on COCO show that the utilization of scene graphs, augmented with relational priors, offer benefits for object detection and instance segmentation. RP-FEM demonstrates its capacity to suppress improbable class predictions within the image while also preventing the model from generating duplicate predictions, leading to improvements over the baseline model on which it is built.</p
The prevalence of nutritional anemia in pregnancy in an east Anatolian province, Turkey
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Anemia is considered a severe public health problem by World Health Organization when anemia prevalence is equal to or greater than 40% in the population. The purpose of this study was to determine the anemia prevalence with the associated factors in pregnant women and to determine the serum iron, folate and B12 vitamin status in anaemic pregnants in Malatya province.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a cross-sectional survey. A multi-sage stratified probability-proportional-to-size cluster sampling methodology was used. A total of 823 pregnant women from sixty clusters were studied. Women were administered a questionnaire related with the subject and blood samples were drawn. Total blood count was performed within four hours and serum iron, folate and B12 vitamin were studied after storing sera at -20 C for six months.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Anemia prevalence was 27.1% (Hb < 11.0 gr/dl). Having four or more living children (OR = 2.2), being at the third trimester (OR = 2.3) and having a low family income (OR = 1.6) were determined as the independent predictors of anemia in pregnancy. Anemia was also associated with soil eating (PICA) in the univariate analysis (p < 0.05). Of anaemic women, 50.0% had a transferrin saturation less than 10% indicating iron deficiency, 34.5% were deficient in B12 vitamin and 71.7% were deficient in folate. Most of the anemias were normocytic-normochromic (56.5%) indicating mixed anemia.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In Malatya, for pregnant women anemia was a moderate public health problem. Coexisting of iron, folate and B vitamin deficiencies was observed among anaemics. To continue anemia control strategies with reasonable care and diligence was recommended.</p
Genome-wide survey and analysis of microsatellites in nematodes, with a focus on the plant-parasitic species Meloidogyne incognita
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Microsatellites are the most popular source of molecular markers for studying population genetic variation in eukaryotes. However, few data are currently available about their genomic distribution and abundance across the phylum Nematoda. The recent completion of the genomes of several nematode species, including <it>Meloidogyne incognita</it>, a major agricultural pest worldwide, now opens the way for a comparative survey and analysis of microsatellites in these organisms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using MsatFinder, the total numbers of 1-6 bp perfect microsatellites detected in the complete genomes of five nematode species (<it>Brugia malayi</it>, <it>Caenorhabditis elegans</it>, <it>M. hapla</it>, <it>M. incognita</it>, <it>Pristionchus pacificus</it>) ranged from 2,842 to 61,547, and covered from 0.09 to 1.20% of the nematode genomes. Under our search criteria, the most common repeat motifs for each length class varied according to the different nematode species considered, with no obvious relation to the AT-richness of their genomes. Overall, (AT)<it>n</it>, (AG)<it>n </it>and (CT)<it>n </it>were the three most frequent dinucleotide microsatellite motifs found in the five genomes considered. Except for two motifs in <it>P. pacificus</it>, all the most frequent trinucleotide motifs were AT-rich, with (AAT)<it>n </it>and (ATT)<it>n </it>being the only common to the five nematode species. A particular attention was paid to the microsatellite content of the plant-parasitic species <it>M. incognita</it>. In this species, a repertoire of 4,880 microsatellite loci was identified, from which 2,183 appeared suitable to design markers for population genetic studies. Interestingly, 1,094 microsatellites were identified in 801 predicted protein-coding regions, 99% of them being trinucleotides. When compared against the InterPro domain database, 497 of these CDS were successfully annotated, and further assigned to Gene Ontology terms.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Contrasted patterns of microsatellite abundance and diversity were characterized in five nematode genomes, even in the case of two closely related <it>Meloidogyne </it>species. 2,245 di- to hexanucleotide loci were identified in the genome of <it>M. incognita</it>, providing adequate material for the future development of a wide range of microsatellite markers in this major plant parasite.</p
Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in patients with lung cancer in a Turkish population
BACKGROUND: Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Oxidative DNA damage may contribute to the cancer risk. The antioxidant paraoxonase (PON1) is an endogenous free radical scavenger in the human body. The aim of this study was to determine serum PON1 and arylesterase (ARE) activities in patients with newly diagnosed LC. METHODS: This case control study involved a total of 39 patients with newly diagnosed LC (untreated) and same number of age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Serum PON1 and ARE activities in addition to lipid parameters were measured in both groups. RESULTS: Serum PON1 and ARE activities were found to be lower in patients with LC compared to the controls (p = 0.001 and p = 0.018, respectively). The ratio of PON1/high density lipoprotein (HDL) was significantly lower in the LC group compared to the control one (p = 0.009). There were positive correlations between the serum levels of HDL and PON1 in both the control (r = 0.415, p = 0.009) and the LC groups (r = 0.496, p = 0.001), respectively. PON1 enzyme activity was calculated as three different phenotypes in both groups. In regard to lipid parameters, total cholesterol levels were significantly lower (p = 0.014) in the LC group whereas the other lipid parameters such as HDL, LDL, and triglyceride levels were not significantly different among groups. CONCLUSION: Serum PON1 activity is significantly low in the LC group compared with the healthy controls. Metastasis status and cigarette smoking do not affect serum PON1 activity in the LC patients
Orientational Effects and Random Mixing in 1-Alkanol + Alkanone Mixtures
1-Alkanol + alkanone systems have been investigated through the data analysis of molar excess functions,
enthalpies, isobaric heat capacities, volumes and entropies, and using the Flory model and the formalism of the concentrationconcentration
structure factor (SCC(0)). The enthalpy of the hydroxyl-carbonyl interactions has been evaluated. These
interactions are stronger in mixtures with shorter alcohols (methanol-1-butanol) and 2-propanone or 2-butanone. However,
effects related to the self-association of alcohols and to solvation between unlike molecules are of minor importance when
compared with those which arise from dipolar interactions. Physical interactions are more relevant in mixtures with longer
1-alkanols. The studied systems are characterized by large structural effects. The variation of the molar excess enthalpy with the
alcohol size along systems with a given ketone or with the alkanone size in solutions with a given alcohol are discussed in terms of
the different contributions to this excess function. Mixtures with methanol show rather large orientational effects. The random
mixing hypothesis is attained to a large extent for mixtures with 1-alkanols ≠ methanol and 2-alkanones. Steric effects and
cyclization lead to stronger orientational effects in mixtures with 3-pentanone, 4-heptanone, or cyclohexanone. The increase of
temperature weakens orientational effects. Results from SCC(0) calculations show that homocoordination is predominant and
support conclusions obtained from the Flory model.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, under Project

Orientational Effects and Random Mixing in 1‑Alkanol + Nitrile Mixtures
1-Alkanol + alkanenitrile or + benzonitrile systems have been investigated by means of the molar excess
functionsenthalpies (Hm E ), isobaric heat capacities (Cp,m
E ), volumes (Vm E ), and entropiesand using the Flory model and the
concentration−concentration structure factor (SCC(0)) formalism. From the analysis of the experimental data available in the
literature, it is concluded that interactions are mainly of dipolar type. In addition, large Hm E values contrast with rather low Vm E
values, indicating the existence of strong structural effects. Hm E measurements have been used to evaluate the enthalpy of the
hydroxyl−nitrile interactions (ΔHOH−CN). They are stronger in methanol systems and become weaker when the alcohol size
increases. In solutions with a given short chain 1-alkanol (up to 1-butanol), the replacement of ethanenitrile by butanenitrile
weakens the mentioned interactions. Application of the Flory model shows that orientational effects exist in methanol or 1-
nonanol, or 1-decanol + ethanenitrile mixtures. In the former solution, this is due to the existence of interactions between unlike
molecules. For mixtures including 1-nonanol or 1-decanol, the systems at 298.15 K are close to their UCST (upper critical
solution temperature), and interactions between like molecules are dominant. Orientational effects also are encountered in
methanol or ethanol + butanenitrile mixtures because self-association of the alcohol plays a more important role. Aromaticity
effect seems to enhance orientational effects. For the remainder of the systems under consideration, the random mixing
hypothesis is attained to a rather large extent. Results from the application of the SCC(0) formalism show that homocoordination
is the dominant trend in the investigated solutions, and are consistent with those obtained from the Flory model
