BeppoSAX measurements of the bright gamma-ray burst 010222
We analyze the BeppoSAX measurements of the prompt and afterglow emission of
the gamma-ray burst GRB010222. Among 45 GRBs detected with the Wide Field
Cameras on BeppoSAX, the 40-700 keV fluence of (9.3+/-0.3)E-5 erg cm-2 is only
surpassed by GRB990123. In terms of the isotropic 20-2000 keV energy output of
7.8E53 erg, it ranks third of all GRBs with measured distances. Since this
burst is so bright, the data provide complete and valuable coverage up to 65 hr
after the event, except for a gap between 3.5 and 8.0 hr. The 2-10 keV flux
history shows clear signs of a break which is consistent with a break seen in
the optical, and provides supporting evidence for the achromatic nature of the
break. An explanation for the break in the context of a collimated expansion is
not straightforward. Rather, a model is favored whereby the fireball is braked
to the non-relativistic regime quickly (within a fraction of day) by a dense
1E6 cm-3 circumburst medium. This implies that, after a mild beaming
correction, GRB010222 may be the most energetic burst observed thus far. The
X-ray decay index after the break is 1.33+/-0.04, the spectral index
0.97+/-0.05. The decay is, with unprecedented accuracy, identical to that

Sedimentation and Type I X-ray Bursts at Low Accretion Rates
Neutron stars, with their strong surface gravity, have interestingly short
timescales for the sedimentation of heavy elements. Motivated by observations
of Type I X-ray bursts from sources with extremely low persistent accretion
luminosities, L_X < 10^{36}\usp\ergspersecond (\simeq
0.01\ensuremath{L_{\mathrm{Edd}}}), we study how sedimentation affects the
distribution of isotopes and the ignition of H and He in the envelope of an
accreting neutron star. For local mass accretion rates \mdot \lesssim
10^{-2}\medd (for which the ignition of H is unstable), where \medd =
8.8\times 10^{4}\nsp\gpscps, the helium and CNO elements sediment out of the
accreted fuel before reaching a temperature where H would ignite. Using
one-zone calculations of the thermonuclear burning, we find a range of
accretion rates for which the unstable H ignition does not trigger unstable He
burning. This range depends on the emergent flux from reactions in the deep
neutron star crust; for F = 0.1\nsp\MeV(\dot{m}/\mb), the range is 3\times
10^{-3}\medd\lesssim\mdot\lesssim 10^{-2}\medd. We speculate that sources
accreting in this range will build up a massive He layer that later produces an
energetic and long X-ray burst. At mass accretion rates lower than this range,
we find that the H flash leads to a strong mixed H/He flash. Surprisingly, even
at accretion rates \mdot \gtrsim 0.1\medd, although the H and He do not
completely segregate, the H abundance at the base of the accumulated layer is
still reduced. While following the evolution of the X-ray burst is beyond the
scope of this introductory paper, we note that the reduced proton-to-seed ratio
favors the production of \iso{12}{C}--an important ingredient for subsequent

Discovery of the neutron star nature of SLX 1737-282
SLX 1737-282 is a persistent moderately bright X-ray source 1.2 deg from the
Galactic center. X-ray observations with the Wide Field Cameras on BeppoSAX
have for the first time revealed the true nature of SLX 1737-282: a 15-min long
thermonuclear flash was detected exposing the source as a neutron star in a
binary system. The flash was Eddington-limited constraining the distance to
between 5 and 8 kpc. We analyze BeppoSAX, ROSAT, and RXTE data on SLX 1737-282.
The persistent 0.5-200 keV luminosity is close to or less than 1% of the
Eddington limit which implies a rarely-seen circumstance for thermonuclear

Effects of thyroid status and thyrostatic drugs on hepatic glucuronidation of lodothyronines and other substrates in rats - Induction of phenol UDP-glucuronyltransferase by methimazole
Glucuronidation of iodothyronines in rat liver is catalyzed by at least three UDP-glucuronyltransferases (UGTs): bilirubin UGT, phenol UGT, and androsterone UGT. Bilirubin and phenol UGT activities are regulated by thyroid hormone, but the effect of thyroid status on hepatic glucuronidation of iodothyronines is unknown. We examined the effects of hypothyroidism induced by treatment of rats with propylthiouracil (PTU) or methimazole (MMI) or by thyroidectomy as well as the effects of T4-induced hyperthyroidism on the hepatic UGT activities for T4, T3, bilirubin, p-nitrophenol (PNP), and androsterone. Bilirubin UGT activity was increased in MMI- or PTU-induced hypothyroid and thyroidectomized rats, and decreased in hyperthyroid animals. T4 and, to a lesser extent, T3 UGT activities were increased in MMI- or PTU-induced hypothyroid rats, and T4 but not T3 glucuronidation also showed a significant increase in thyroidectomized rats. T4 but not T3 UGT activity was slightly decreased in hyperthyroid rats. While PNP UGT activity was decreased in thyroidectomized rats and increased in hyperthyroid animals, it was also markedly increased by MMI and slightly increased by PTU-induced hypothyroidism. In T4-substituted rats, MMI did not affect T4, T3, bilirubin and androsterone UGT activities but again strongly induced PNP UGT activity, indicating that this represented a direct induction of PNP UGT by the drug independent of its thyrostatic action. Androsterone UGT activity was hardly affected by thyroid status. Our results suggest a modest, negative control of the hepatic glucuronidation of thyroid hormone by thyroid status, which may be mediated by changes in bilirubin UGT activity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the marked induction of a hepatic enzyme by MMI, which is not mediated by its thyroid hormone-lowering effect
Sexuality in patients with asthma and COPD
SummarySexual quality of life was examined in 55 outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, using disease-specific questionnaires. Compared to an age- and sex-matched norm group, male patients with COPD reported a significantly lower sexual quality of life on all dimensions of the questionnaire. Female patients with COPD reported a lower frequency of sexual intimacy and lower sexual quality of life overall. Patients with asthma reported sexual quality-of-life scores that were somewhat better than COPD patients but worse than the healthy control group. Patients reported that they did not discuss sexual quality-of-life issues with their physician. Sexuality needs to be discussed by the health care provider in the consultation in order to improve quality of life of patients with chronic respiratory disorders
Measurement of migration of a humeral head resurfacing prosthesis using radiostereometry without implant marking: An experimental study
Today, the shoulder joint is the third most commonly replaced joint after the hip and knee joints and the incidence is increasing. In Sweden, 1863 primary Shoulder Arthroplasties and 195 revisions were performed in 2017. The most common diagnoses are Osteoarthritis and irreparable tears of the rotator cuff, with or without arthropathy, often referred to as cuff tear arthropathy.
Different Shoulder Arthroplasty (SA) concepts include anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), hemiarthroplasty (HSA) and reversed shoulder arthroplasty, but also humeral head resurfacing (HHR) and stemless arthroplasties. All concepts offer pain relief, improvement of function and in quality of life for the different diagnoses. Unfortunately, there are sometimes complications after SA. They involve periprosthetic joint infection, humeral and glenoid fractures, stress shielding, loosening of the glenoid and humeral component but also glenoid erosion and cuff rupture. Some of these complications are most common within 1 year after operation, some after several years, both may lead to a revision. This, together with the fact that new designs of implants and methods of fixation of SA continues to develop, stresses the importance of continuous monitoring of implant survival and follow-up.
The overall aim of this thesis was to describe clinical examples of different methods to assess the outcome after Shoulder Arthroplasty. The most common methods are clinical examination, radiographic assessment, Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM), National Joint registries, where revisions are an important outcome, but also Clinical Trials. All of these methods are used in one or more of the 4 papers in this thesis and shows the complexity of the topic and the practical work.
In paper I we used Radio Stereometric Analysis (RSA) in an experimental set-up and concluded that marker-free RSA can be used for a humeral head resurfacing arthroplasty. In paper II we used data from the Swedish Shoulder Arthroplasty Registry (SSAR) with PROM and revisions to conclude that age is the only factor that affects revision when comparing HSA and HHR. Paper III is a long-time follow-up of a Randomized controlled study where we used radiological assessment, PROM and revisions. The conclusion was that both TSA and HSA develop severe radiological changes 10 year after primary operation. Paper IV is a prospective RSA cohort study where we also evaluated PROM and revisions. The conclusion is that HHR seems to obtain a secure fixation in the humerus, after an initial migration. But also that the prostheses shows continuous glenoid wear.
The main conclusion of this thesis is that patient’s operated with SA needs continuous monitoring and several methods may be used to evaluate the outcome
What national governance codes say about corporate culture
Purpose: This study aims to provide insight into the current incorporation of corporate culture in national corporate governance codes. The authors identify three levels of incorporation for each of the following three dimensions: layers of corporate culture (the “what”), the alignment of corporate culture in the organization (the “for whom”) and the board’s roles regarding corporate culture (the “how”). Design/methodology/approach: To assess the extent to which national codes have incorporated corporate culture, the authors used a sample of 88 national corporate governance codes. The authors performed a content analysis of these codes using a computer-aided text analysis program. The first step involved the identification of dimensions of corporate culture per national code. These dimensions were then assessed based on three levels of incorporation. Finally, the authors ranked national codes with similar levels of incorporation per dimension and aggregated the dimensions. Findings: The data show that five of the 88 national corporate governance codes that the authors analysed scored the highest level in all three dimensions of corporate culture. Originality/value: This is the first study to provide an overview of what national corporate governance codes say about corporate culture. The authors address two gaps in the existing literature. First, the authors develop and use a richer conceptualization of how corporate culture can be addressed in national corporate governance codes.
