Extracting information from short messages
Much currently transmitted information takes the form of e-mails or SMS text messages and so extracting information from such short messages is increasingly important. The words in a message can be partitioned into the syntactic structure, terms from the domain of discourse and the data being transmitted. This paper describes a light-weight Information Extraction component which uses pattern matching to separate the three aspects: the structure is supplied as a template; domain terms are the metadata of a data source (or their synonyms), and data is extracted as those words matching placeholders in the templates
Anomalous Transmission Phase of a Kondo-Correlated Quantum Dot
We study phase evolution of transmission through a quantum dot with Kondo
correlations. By considering a model that includes nonresonant transmission as
well as the Anderson impurity, we explain unusually large phase evolution of
about in the Kondo valley observed in recent experiments. We argue that
this anomalous phase evolution is a universal property that can be found in the
high-temperature Kondo phase in the presence of the time-reversal symmetry.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Zero-Bias Anomalies in Narrow Tunnel Junctions in the Quantum Hall Regime
We report on the study of cleaved-edge-overgrown line junctions with a
serendipitously created narrow opening in an otherwise thin, precise line
barrier. Two sets of zero-bias anomalies are observed with an enhanced
conductance for filling factors and a strongly suppressed conductance
for . A transition between the two behaviors is found near . The zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) line shapes find explanation in
Luttinger liquid models of tunneling between quantum Hall edge states. The ZBA
for occurs from strong backscattering induced by suppression of
quasiparticle tunneling between the edge channels for the Landau
levels. The ZBA for arises from weak tunneling of quasiparticles

Cascade of Quantum Phase Transitions in Tunnel-Coupled Edge States
We report on the cascade of quantum phase transitions exhibited by
tunnel-coupled edge states across a quantum Hall line junction. We identify a
series of quantum critical points between successive strong and weak tunneling
regimes in the zero-bias conductance. Scaling analysis shows that the
conductance near the critical magnetic fields is a function of a single
scaling argument , where the exponent .
This puzzling resemblance to a quantum Hall-insulator transition points to
importance of interedge correlation between the coupled edge states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy study of electron-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganite: La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 film
The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been
investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption
spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very
similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent.
A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d 4f absorption edge,
suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground
state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet
feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions in LCeMO.
The measured Mn 3d PES/XAS spectra for LCeMO agrees reasonably well with the
calculated Mn 3d PDOS using the LSDA+U method. The LSDA+U calculation predicts
a half-metallic ground state for LCeMO.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Effect of Charge Fluctuations on the Persistent Current through a Quantum Dot
We study coherent charge transfer between an Aharonov-Bohm ring and a
side-attached quantum dot. The charge fluctuation between the two
sub-structures is shown to give rise to algebraic suppression of the persistent
current circulating the ring as the size of the ring becomes relatively large.
The charge fluctuation at resonance provides transition between the diamagnetic
and the paramagnetic states.
Universal scaling, crossover behavior of the persistent current from a
continuous to a discrete energy limit in the ring is also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
