Multipole Gravitational Lensing and High-order Perturbations on the Quadrupole Lens
An arbitrary surface mass density of gravitational lens can be decomposed
into multipole components. We simulate the ray-tracing for the multipolar mass
distribution of generalized SIS (Singular Isothermal Sphere) model, based on
the deflection angles which are analytically calculated. The magnification
patterns in the source plane are then derived from inverse shooting technique.
As have been found, the caustics of odd mode lenses are composed of two
overlapping layers for some lens models. When a point source traverses such
kind of overlapping caustics, the image numbers change by \pm 4, rather than
\pm 2. There are two kinds of images for the caustics. One is the critical
curve and the other is the transition locus. It is found that the image number
of the fold is exactly the average value of image numbers on two sides of the
fold, while the image number of the cusp is equal to the smaller one. We also
focus on the magnification patterns of the quadrupole (m = 2) lenses under the
perturbations of m = 3, 4 and 5 mode components, and found that one, two, and
three butterfly or swallowtail singularities can be produced respectively. With
the increasing intensity of the high-order perturbations, the singularities
grow up to bring sixfold image regions. If these perturbations are large enough
to let two or three of the butterflies or swallowtails contact, eightfold or
tenfold image regions can be produced as well. The possible astronomical
applications are discussed.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure
Nuclear Modification to Parton Distribution Functions and Parton Saturation
We introduce a generalized definition of parton distribution functions (PDFs)
for a more consistent all-order treatment of power corrections. We present a
new set of modified DGLAP evolution equations for nuclear PDFs, and show that
the resummed -type of leading nuclear size enhanced power
corrections significantly slow down the growth of gluon density at small-.
We discuss the relation between the calculated power corrections and the
saturation phenomena.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in the proceedings of QM200
Two-dimensional structures of ferroelectric domain inversion in LiNbO3 by direct electron beam lithography
We report on the fabrication of domain-reversed structures in LiNbO3 by means
of direct electron beam lithography at room temperature without any static
bias. The LiNbO3 crystals were chemically etched after the exposure of electron
beam and then, the patterns of domain inversion were characterized by atomic
force microscopy (AFM). In our experiment, an interesting phenomenon occurred
when the electron beam wrote a one-dimensional (1-D) grating on the negative
c-face: a two-dimensional (2-D) dotted array was observed on the positive c-
face, which is significant for its potential to produce 2-D and
three-dimensional photonic crystals. Furthermore, we also obtained 2-D
ferroelectric domain inversion in the whole LiNbO3 crystal by writing the 2-D
square pattern on the negative c-face. Such a structure may be utilized to
fabricate 2-D nonlinear photonic crystal. AFM demonstrates that a 2-D
domain-reversed structure has been achieved not only on the negative c-face of
the crystal, but also across the whole thickness of the crystal.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
CP violation in neutrino oscillation and leptogenesis
We study the correlation between CP violation in neutrino oscillations and
leptogenesis in the framework with two heavy Majorana neutrinos and three light
neutrinos. Among three unremovable CP phases, a heavy Majorana phase
contributes to leptogenesis. We show how the heavy Majorana phase contributes
to Jarlskog determinant as well as neutrinoless double decay by
identifying a low energy CP violating phase which signals the CP violating
phase for leptogenesis. For some specific cases of the Dirac mass term of
neutrinos, a direct relation between lepton number asymmetry and is
obtained. For the most general case of the framework, we study the effect on coming from the phases which are not related to leptogenesis, and also show
how the correlation can be lost in the presence of those phases.Comment: 4 pages and 3 figure
Triple sign reversal of Hall effect in HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6} thin films after heavy-ion irradiations
Triple sign reversal in the mixed-state Hall effect has been observed for the
first time in ion-irradiated HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6} thin films. The negative dip
at the third sign reversal is more pronounced for higher fields, which is
opposite to the case of the first sign reversal near T_c in most high-T_c
superconductors. These observations can be explained by a recent prediction in
which the third sign reversal is attributed to the energy derivative of the
density of states and to a temperature-dependent function related to the
superconducting energy gap. These contributions prominently appear in cases
where the mean free path is significantly decreased, such as our case of
ion-irradiated thin films.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, submitted Phys. Rev. Let
Aharonov-Bohm Effect for Parallel and T-shaped Double Quantum Dots
We investigate the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect for the double quantum dots in
the Kondo regime using the slave-boson mean-field approximation. In contrast to
the non-interacting case, where the AB oscillation generally has the period of
4 when the two-subring structure is formed via the interdot tunneling
, we find that the AB oscillation has the period of 2 in the Kondo
regime. Such effects appear for the double quantum dots close to the T-shaped
geometry even in the charge-fluctuation regime. These results follow from the
fact that the Kondo resonance is always fixed to the Fermi level irrespective
of the detailed structure of the bare dot-levels.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures; minor change
Treelines dynamics in response to climate change in the Min Mountains, southwestern China
Abies faxoniana is the dominant plant species of the forest ecosystem on the eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where the treeline is strongly defined by climate. The tree-ring chronologies and age structure of Abies faxoniana were developed in the treeline ecotones on the northwestern and southeastern aspects of the Min Mountains in the Wanglang Nature Reserve to examine the treeline dynamics of recent decades in response to climate change. On the northwestern aspect, correlation analysis showed that the radial growth was significantly and positively correlated with precipitation in current January and monthly mean temperature in current April, but significantly and negatively correlated with monthly mean temperature in previous August. On the southeastern aspect, the radial growth was significantly negatively correlated with monthly mean temperature in previous July and August. The different responses of radial growth to climatic variability on both the aspects might be mainly due to the micro-environmental conditions. The recruitment benefited from the warm temperature in current April, July and September on the northwestern aspect. The responses of radial growth and recruitment to climatic variability were similar on the northwestern slope. Recruitment was greatly restricted by competition with dense bamboos on the southeastern aspect
Dendritic flux patterns in MgB2 films
Magneto-opitcal studies of a c-oriented epitaxial MgB2 film with critical
current density 10^7 A/cm^2 demonstrate a breakdown of the critical state at
temperatures below 10 K [cond-mat/0104113]. Instead of conventional uniform and
gradual flux penetration in an applied magnetic field, we observe an abrupt
invasion of complex dendritic structures. When the applied field subsequently
decreases, similar dendritic structures of the return flux penetrate the film.
The static and dynamic properties of the dendrites are discussed.Comment: Accepted to Supercond. Sci. Techno
