Detection of a single-charge defect in a metal-oxide-semiconductor structure using vertically coupled Al and Si single-electron transistors
An Al-AlO_x-Al single-electron transistor (SET) acting as the gate of a
narrow (~ 100 nm) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET)
can induce a vertically aligned Si SET at the Si/SiO_2 interface near the
MOSFET channel conductance threshold. By using such a vertically coupled Al and
Si SET system, we have detected a single-charge defect which is tunnel-coupled
to the Si SET. By solving a simple electrostatic model, the fractions of each
coupling capacitance associated with the defect are extracted. The results
reveal that the defect is not a large puddle or metal island, but its size is
rather small, corresponding to a sphere with a radius less than 1 nm. The small
size of the defect suggests it is most likely a single-charge trap at the
Si/SiO_2 interface. Based on the ratios of the coupling capacitances, the
interface trap is estimated to be about 20 nm away from the Si SET.Comment: 5 pages and 5 figure
The Habitable Zone Gallery
The Habitable Zone Gallery (www.hzgallery.org) is a new service to the
exoplanet community which provides Habitable Zone (HZ) information for each of
the exoplanetary systems with known planetary orbital parameters. The service
includes a sortable table with information on the percentage of orbital phase
spent within the HZ, planetary effective temperatures, and other basic
planetary properties. In addition to the table, we also plot the period and
eccentricity of the planets with respect to their time spent in the HZ. The
service includes a gallery of known systems which plot the orbits and the
location of the HZ with respect to those orbits. Also provided are animations
which aid in orbit visualization and provide the changing effective temperature
for those planets in eccentric orbits. Here we describe the science motivation,

Hydrogenic Spin Quantum Computing in Silicon: A Digital Approach
We suggest an architecture for quantum computing with spin-pair encoded
qubits in silicon. Electron-nuclear spin-pairs are controlled by a dc magnetic
field and electrode-switched on and off hyperfine interaction. This digital
processing is insensitive to tuning errors and easy to model. Electron
shuttling between donors enables multi-qubit logic. These hydrogenic spin
qubits are transferable to nuclear spin-pairs, which have long coherence times,
and electron spin-pairs, which are ideally suited for measurement and

Is there a renormalization of the 1D conductance in Luttinger Liquid model?
Properties of 1D transport strongly depend on the proper choice of boundary
conditions. It has been frequently stated that the Luttinger Liquid (LL)
conductance is renormalized by the interaction as . To
contest this result I develop a model of 1D LL wire with the interaction
switching off at the infinities. Its solution shows that there is no
renormalization of the universal conductance while the electrons have a free

Geographic and Age-Based Variations in Medicare Reimbursement Among ASSH Members.
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate how American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) members\u27 Medicare reimbursement depends on their geographical location and number of years in practice. Methods: Demographic data for surgeons who were active members of the ASSH in 2012 were obtained using information publicly available through the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Hand-surgeons-per-capita and average reimbursement per surgeon were calculated for each state. Regression analysis was performed to determine a relationship between (1) each state\u27s average reimbursement versus the number of ASSH members in that state, (2) average reimbursement versus number of hand surgeons per capita, and (3) total reimbursement from Medicare versus number of years in practice. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to detect a difference in reimbursement based on categorical range of years as an ASSH member. Results: A total of 1667 ASSH members satisfied inclusion in this study. Although there was significant variation among states\u27 average reimbursement, reimbursement was not significantly correlated with the state\u27s hand surgeons per capita or total number of hand surgeons in that given state. Correlation between years as an ASSH member and average reimbursement was significant but non-linear; the highest reimbursements were seen in surgeons who had been ASSH members from 8 to 20 years. Conclusions: Peak reimbursement from Medicare for ASSH members appears to be related to the time of surgeons\u27 peak operative volume, rather than any age-based bias for or against treating Medicare beneficiaries. In addition, though geographic variation in reimbursement does exist, this does not appear to correlate with density or availability of hand surgeons
Gate-Controlled Electron Spin Resonance in a GaAs/AlGaAs Heterostructure
The electron spin resonance (ESR) of two-dimensional electrons is
investigated in a gated GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. We found that the ESR
resonance frequency can be turned by means of a gate voltage. The front and
back gates of the heterostructure produce opposite g-factor shift, suggesting
that electron g-factor is being electrostatically controlled by shifting the
equilibrium position of the electron wave function from one epitaxial layer to
another with different g-factors
