    Constraining the low-energy S=-2 meson-baryon interaction with two-particle correlations

    The two-particle correlation technique applied to KΛK^-\Lambda pairs in pp collisions at LHC recently provided the most precise data on the strangeness S=2S=-2 meson-baryon interaction. In this letter, we use for the first time femtoscopic data to constrain the parameters of a low-energy effective QCD Lagrangian. The tuned model delivers new insights on the molecular nature of the Ξ(1620)\Xi(1620) and Ξ(1690)\Xi(1690) states. This procedure opens the possibility to determine higher order corrections, directly constraining QCD effective models particularly in the multi-strange and charm sectors

    Carbon Nanotube/Nanofibers and Graphite Hybrids for Li-Ion Battery Application

    To improve the electrical conductivity of negative electrodes of lithium ion batteries, we applied a direct CVD synthesis of carbon nanomaterials on the surface of graphite particles. To prepare a catalyst, two alternative approaches were utilized: colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) and metal (Ni and Co) nitrate salt precursors deposited on the graphite surface. Both colloidal and precursor systems allowed us to produce carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on the graphite surface with high coverage under the optimum CVD conditions. Electrical measurements revealed that the resistivity of the actual electrodes fabricated from CNFs coated graphite particles was about 40% lower compared to the original pristine graphite electrodes.Peer reviewe

    Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) Intensity Oscillations: Growth Modes and Growth Rates: A Critique

    The origin of and diffraction effects associated with reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity oscillations which occur during layer-by-layer growth of epitaxial thin films of III-V compounds by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are explained. It is shown that on (001) oriented substrates the period of the oscillations is in general a direct measure of the film growth rate which corresponds to the group III element flux. There are, however, exceptions to this simple concept including growth under group III rich-conditions, vicinal plane growth and growth from pulsed beams; each is considered. On non-(001) low index orientations, the RHEED oscillation period only provides a measure of the growth rate over a very limited range of conditions. The fundamental reason appears to be the more restricted reactivity between the group III and V elements, so the oscillations are induced by the group V element, not the group III, which is quite different from (001) surfaces, at least for conventional growth conditions. Finally, growth modes and strain relaxation differences between (001) and (110)-based growth of InAs on GaAs are illustrated. It is shown that there is no real relationship between strain and growth mode and it is suggested that adatom mobility is the essential parameter which determines growth mode. In more general terms, it appears that kinetic factors rather than equilibrium considerations are responsible for the growth mode. Models based on purely equilibrium concepts are therefore unlikely to have general validity

    MOA 2003-BLG-37: A Bulge Jerk-Parallax Microlens Degeneracy

    We analyze the Galactic bulge microlensing event MOA-2003-BLG-37. Although the Einstein timescale is relatively short, t_e=43 days, the lightcurve displays deviations consistent with parallax effects due to the Earth's accelerated motion. We show that the chi^2 surface has four distinct local minima that are induced by the ``jerk-parallax'' degeneracy, with pairs of solutions having projected Einstein radii, \tilde r_e = 1.76 AU and 1.28 AU, respectively. This is the second event displaying such a degeneracy and the first toward the Galactic bulge. For both events, the jerk-parallax formalism accurately describes the offsets between the different solutions, giving hope that when extra solutions exist in future events, they can easily be found. However, the morphologies of the chi^2 surfaces for the two events are quite different, implying that much remains to be understood about this degeneracy.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, ApJ, in press, 1 July 200

    Cardiorespiratory comorbidity and postoperative complications following esophagectomy: a European multicenter cohort study

    BACKGROUND: The impact of cardiorespiratory comorbidity on operative outcomes after esophagectomy remains controversial. This study investigated the effect of cardiorespiratory comorbidity on postoperative complications for patients treated for esophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A European multicenter cohort study from five high-volume esophageal cancer centers including patients treated between 2010 and 2017 was conducted. The effect of cardiorespiratory comorbidity and respiratory function upon postoperative outcomes was assessed. RESULTS: In total 1590 patients from five centers were included; 274 (17.2%) had respiratory comorbidity, and 468 (29.4%) had cardiac comorbidity. Respiratory comorbidity was associated with increased risk of overall postoperative complications, anastomotic leak, pulmonary complications, pneumonia, increased Clavien-Dindo score, and critical care and hospital length of stay. After neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, respiratory comorbidity was associated with increased risk of anastomotic leak [odds ratio (OR) 1.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.11-3.04], pneumonia (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.10-2.47), and any pulmonary complication (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.04-2.22), an effect which was not observed following neoadjuvant chemotherapy or surgery alone. Cardiac comorbidity was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary complications, respiratory failure, and Clavien-Dindo score ≥ IIIa. Among all patients, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio > 70% was associated with reduced risk of overall postoperative complications, cardiovascular complications, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary complications, and pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that cardiorespiratory comorbidity and impaired pulmonary function are associated with increased risk of postoperative complications after esophagectomy performed in high-volume European centers. Given the observed interaction with neoadjuvant approach, these data indicate a potentially modifiable index of perioperative risk
