Management control systems in innovation companies: A literature based framework

    Get PDF
Past research has traditionally argued that management control systems (MCSs) may present a hindrance to the creativity of innovation companies. This theoretical paper surveys the literature to focus an investigation on the MCSs of innovation companies. Within the object of control paradigm the paper develops and presents a theoretical model of the impact of eleven external, organisational and innovation related contingency factors on the MCSs in companies that engage in innovation activities. We also suggest measures for further empirical research. By formulating hypotheses on 43 potential interactions the model predicts contradictory influences on two direct control categories, results and action control, but stresses the importance of two indirect categories, personnel and cultural control. More specifically, the high levels of technological complexity and innovation capability in this type of company are expected to be negatively associated with the application of results and action control, whereas personnel and cultural seem to be more appropriate. Furthermore, important sources of finance, venture capital and public funding, are both hypothesised to be positively associated with the application of results, action and personnel control; whereas only public funding is predicted to be positively related to the application of cultural control. The principal contribution of this paper lies in synthesising the literature to provide a model of the impact of a unique set of eleven contingency factors for innovation companies on a broad scope of controls. In addition, the contingency model, if empirically validated, would add value by inferring the particular forms of management control which would be beneficial in innovative company settings. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

A measurement of the top quark–antiquark pair production cross section σtt¯ in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016. Dilepton events (e ± μ ∓, μ+μ−, e+e−) are selected and the cross section is measured from a likelihood fit. For a top quark mass parameter in the simulation of mMCt=172.5GeV the fit yields a measured cross section σtt¯=803±2(stat)±25(syst)±20(lumi)pb, in agreement with the expectation from the standard model calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. A simultaneous fit of the cross section and the top quark mass parameter in the POWHEG simulation is performed. The measured value of mMCt=172.33±0.14(stat)+0.66−0.72(syst)GeV is in good agreement with previous measurements. The resulting cross section is used, together with the theoretical prediction, to determine the top quark mass and to extract a value of the strong coupling constant with different sets of parton distribution functions

A measurement of the energy density in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=13 TeV is presented. The data have been recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC during low luminosity operations in 2015. The energy density is studied as a function of pseudorapidity in the ranges −6.6<η<−5.2 and 3.15<|η|<5.20. The results are compared with the predictions of several models. All the models considered suggest a different shape of the pseudorapidity dependence compared to that observed in the data. A comparison with LHC proton–proton collision data at s√=0.9 and 7TeV confirms the compatibility of the data with the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation

Constraints on anomalous HVV couplings from the production of Higgs bosons decaying to τ lepton pairs

A study is presented of anomalous HVV interactions of the Higgs boson, including its CP properties. The study uses Higgs boson candidates produced mainly in vector boson fusion and gluon fusion that subsequently decay to a pair of τ leptons. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb−1. A matrix element technique is employed for the analysis of anomalous interactions. The results are combined with those from the H→4ℓ decay channel presented earlier, yielding the most stringent constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to electroweak vector bosons expressed as effective cross section fractions and phases: the CP-violating parameter fa3cos(ϕa3)=(0.00±0.27)×10−3 and the CP-conserving parameters fa2cos(ϕa2)=(0.08+1.04−0.21)×10−3, fΛ1cos(ϕΛ1)=(0.00+0.53−0.09)×10−3, and fZγΛ1cos(ϕZγΛ1)=(0.0+1.1−1.3)×10−3. The current dataset does not allow for precise constraints on CP properties in the gluon fusion process. The results are consistent with standard model expectations

    Studies of B_{s2}^{*} (5840)⁰ and B_{s1} (5830)⁰ mesons including the observation of the B_{s2}^{*} (5840)⁰ → B⁰K_{s}^{0} decay in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

Measurements of B_{s2}^{*} (5840)⁰ and B_{s1} (5840)⁰ mesons are performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb⁻¹, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The analysis studies P-wave B_{s}^{0} meson decays into B^{(*)}⁺K⁻ and B^{(*)}⁰K_{s}^{0}, where the B⁺ and B⁰ mesons are identified using the decays B⁺ → J/φK⁺ and B⁰ → J/φK* (892)⁰. The masses of the P-wave B_{s}^{0} meson states are measured and the natural width of the B_{*}^{s2} (5840)⁰ state is determined. The first measurement of the mass difference between the charged and neutral B* mesons is also presented. The B_{*}^{s2} (5840)⁰ decay to B⁰K_{s}^{0} is observed, together with a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the B_{s2}^{*} (5840)⁰ → B⁺K⁻ decay

Search for resonant production of second-generation sleptons with same-sign dimuon events in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

A search is presented for resonant production of second-generation sleptons ( μ˜L , ν˜μ ) via the R-parity-violating coupling λ′211 to quarks, in events with two same-sign muons and at least two jets in the final state. The smuon (muon sneutrino) is expected to decay into a muon and a neutralino (chargino), which will then decay into a second muon and at least two jets. The analysis is based on the 2016 data set of proton-proton collisions at s√=13TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 . No significant deviation is observed with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections, ranging from 0.24 to 730 fb , are derived in the context of two simplified models representing the dominant signal contributions leading to a same-sign muon pair. The cross section limits are translated into coupling limits for a modified constrained minimal supersymmetric model with λ′211 as the only nonzero R-parity violating coupling. The results significantly extend restrictions of the parameter space compared with previous searches for similar models

Measurement of prompt ψ(2S) production cross sections in proton–lead and proton–proton collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of prompt ψ(2S) meson production cross sections in proton–lead (pPb) and proton–proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon–nucleon center-of-mass energy of √sNN = 5.02 TeV are reported. The results are based on pPb and pp data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 34.6 nb−1 and 28.0 pb−1, respectively. The nuclear modification factor RpPb is measured for prompt ψ(2S) in the transverse momentum range 4 < pT < 30 GeV/c and the center-of-mass rapidity range −2.4 < yCM < 1.93. The results on ψ(2S) RpPb are compared to the corresponding modification factor for prompt J/ψ mesons. The results point to different nuclear effects at play in the production of the excited charmonium state compared to the ground state, in the region of backward rapidity and for pT < 10 GeV/c

A search for a heavy resonance decaying into a top quark and antiquark (tt¯) pair is performed using proton-proton collisions at s√=13 TeV. The search uses the data set collected with the CMS detector in 2016, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The analysis considers three exclusive final states and uses reconstruction techniques that are optimized for top quarks with high Lorentz boosts, which requires the use of nonisolated leptons and jet substructure techniques. No significant excess of events relative to the expected yield from standard model processes is observed. Upper limits on the production cross section of heavy resonances decaying to a tt¯ pair are calculated. Limits are derived for a leptophobic topcolor Z′ resonance with widths of 1, 10, and 30%, relative to the mass of the resonance, and exclude masses up to 3.80, 5.25, and 6.65 TeV, respectively. Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gluon in the Randall-Sundrum model are excluded up to 4.55 TeV. To date, these are the most stringent limits on tt¯ resonances

Search for vector-like quarks in events with two oppositely charged leptons and jets in proton-proton collisions at root s=13TeV

    Get PDF
A search for the pair production of heavy vector-like partners T and B of the top and bottom quarks has been performed by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC using proton–proton collisions at s√=13TeV. The data sample was collected in 2016 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1. Final states studied for TT¯¯¯¯ production include those where one of the T quarks decays via T→tZ and the other via T→bW, tZ, or tH, where H is a Higgs boson. For the BB¯¯¯¯ case, final states include those where one of the B quarks decays via B→bZ and the other B→tW, bZ, or bH. Events with two oppositely charged electrons or muons, consistent with coming from the decay of a Z boson, and jets are investigated. The number of observed events is consistent with standard model background estimations. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the masses of the T and B quarks for a range of branching fractions. Assuming 100% branching fractions for T→tZ, and B→bZ, T and B quark mass values below 1280 and 1130GeV, respectively, are excluded
