    Anodized aluminium pressure sensitive paint: effect of paint application technique

    The porous surface of the Anodized Aluminium Pressure Sensitive Paint (AA-PSP) is what differentiates it from conventional solā€“gel based PSPs, leading to a faster response time of the paint. The objective of the current study is to examine the effect of the paint application technique, i.e., whether the AA substrate is dipped or sprayed, on the pressure and temperature sensitivity. A more practical procedure for preparing the AA samples is also presented. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images are acquired together with the calibration of the AA-PSP at various temperatures and pressures to determine the effectiveness of each application technique. The results revealed that the AA sample which was dipped in the PSP solution shows a higher pressure sensitivity than the sprayed one. The SEMs show that spraying leads to the covering up of the micropores created on the surface and undermining the benefit of anodization

    Caffeine activates preferentially Ī±1-isoform of 5'AMP-activated protein kinase in rat skeletal muscle.

    [Aim]: Caffeine activates 5ā€²AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a signalling intermediary implicated in the regulation of glucose, lipid and energy metabolism in skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle expresses two catalytic Ī± subunits of AMPK, Ī±1 and Ī±2, but the isoform specificity of caffeine-induced AMPK activation is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine which Ī± isoform is preferentially activated by caffeine in vitroand in vivo using rat skeletal muscle. [Methods]: Rat epitrochlearis muscle was isolated and incubated in vitro in the absence or presence of caffeine. In another experiment, the muscle was dissected after intravenous injection of caffeine. Isoform-specific AMPK activity, the phosphorylation status of AMPKĪ± Thr172 and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) Ser79, the concentrations of ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr) and glycogen, and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3MG) transport activity were estimated. [Results]: Incubation of isolated epitrochlearis muscle with 1 mM of caffeine for 15 min increased AMPKĪ±1 activity, but not AMPKĪ±2 activity; concentrations of ATP, PCr and glycogen were not affected. Incubation with 3 mM of caffeine activated AMPKĪ±2 and reduced PCr and glycogen concentrations. Incubation with 1 mM of caffeine increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and ACC and enhanced 3MG transport. Intravenous injection of caffeine (5 mg kgāˆ’1) predominantly activated AMPKĪ±1 and increased 3MG transport without affecting energy status. [Conclusion]:ā€‚Our results suggest that of the two Ī± isoforms of AMPK, AMPKĪ±1 is predominantly activated by caffeine via an energy-independent mechanism and that the activation of AMPKĪ±1 increases glucose transport and ACC phosphorylation in skeletal muscle

    A Spectroscopic Survey of a Sample of Active M Dwarfs

    A moderate resolution spectroscopic survey of Fleming's sample of 54 X-ray selected M dwarfs with photometric distances less than 25 pc is presented. Radial and rotation velocities have been measured by fits to the H-alpha profiles. Radial velocities have been measured by cross correlation. Artificial broadening of an observed spectrum has produced a relationship between H-alpha FWHM and rotation speed, which we use to infer rotation speeds for the entire sample by measurement of the H-alpha emission line. We find 3 ultra-fast rotators (UFRs, vsini > 100km/s), and 8 stars with 30 < vsini < 100 km/s. The UFRs have variable emission. Cross-correlation velocities measured for ultra-fast rotators (UFRs) are shown to depend on rotation speed and the filtering used. The radial velocity dispersion of the sample is 17 km/s. A new double emission line spectroscopic binary with a period of 3.55 days has been discovered, and another known one is in the sample. Three other objects are suspected spectroscopic binaries, and at least six are visual doubles. The only star in the sample observed to have significant lithium is a known TW Hya Association member, TWA 8A. These results show that there are a number of young (< 10^8 yr) and very young (< 10^7 yr) low mass stars in the immediate solar neighbourhood. The H-alpha activity strength does not depend on rotation speed. Our fast rotators are less luminous than similarly fast rotators in the Pleiades.     Effect of Impurities in Description of Surface Nanobubbles

    Surface nanobubbles emerging at solid-liquid interfaces of submerged hydrophobic surfaces show extreme stability and very small (gas-side) contact angles. In a recent study Ducker (W. A. Ducker, Langmuir 25, 8907 (2009).) conjectured that these effects may arise from the presence of impurities at the air-water interface of the nanobubbles. In this paper we present a quantitative analysis of this hypothesis by estimating the dependence of the contact angle and the Laplace pressure on the fraction of impurity coverage at the liquid-gas interface. We first develop a general analytical framework to estimate the effect of impurities (ionic or non-ionic) in lowering the surface tension of a given air-water interface. We then employ this model to show that the (gas-side) contact angle and the Laplace pressure across the nanobubbles indeed decrease considerably with an increase in the fractional coverage of the impurities, though still not sufficiently small to account for the observed surface nanobubble stability. The proposed model also suggests the dependencies of the Laplace pressure and the contact angle on the type of impurity

    A case of wound dual infection with Pasteurella dagmatis and Pasteurella Canis resulting from a dog bite - limitations of Vitek-2 system in exact identification of Pasteurella species

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Pasteurella </it>species, widely known as indigenous orgganisms in the oral and gastrointestinal floras of many wild and domestic animals, are important pathogens in both animals and humans. Human infections due to <it>Pasteurella </it>species are in most cases associated with infected injuries following animal bites. We encountered a rare case of dual infections caused by different two <it>Pasteurella </it>species occurred in a previously healthy 25-year-old female sustaining injury by a dog-bite.</p> <p>Methodology</p> <p>Exudates from the open wound of her dog-bite site, together with the saliva of the dog were submitted for bacteriological examination. Predominantly appearing grayish-white smooth colonies with almost the same colonial properties but slightly different glistening grown on chocolate and sheep blood agar plates were characterized morphologically by Gram's stain, biochemically by automated instrument using Vitek 2 system using GN cards together with commercially available kit system, ID-Test HN-20 rapid panels, and genetically by sequencing the 16S rRNA genes of the organism using a Taq DyeDeoxy Terminator Cycle Sequencing and a model 3100 DNA sequencer instrument.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The causative isolates from the dog-bite site were finally identified as <it>P</it>. <it>canis </it>and <it>P</it>. <it>dagmatis </it>from the findings of the morphological, cultural, and biochemical properties together with the comparative sequences of the 16S rRNA genes. Both the isolates were highly susceptible to many antibiotics and the patient was successfully treated with the administration of so-called the first generation cephalosporin, cefazolin followed by so-called the third generation cephalosporin, cefcapene pivoxil. The isolate from the dog was subsequently identified as <it>P</it>. <it>canis</it>, the same species as the isolate from the patient.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, this was the second report of a dual infection with <it>Pasteurella </it>species consisting of <it>P</it>. <it>dagmatis </it>and <it>P. canis </it>resulting from a dog-bite, followed by the first report of dual infections due to <it>P</it>. <it>dagmatis </it>and <it>P. multocida </it>in 1988. Our isolate finally identified as <it>P</it>. <it>dagmatis </it>was misidentified as <it>P</it>. <it>pneumotripica by </it>means of the Vitek 2 system. The species name "<it>P</it>. <it>dagmatis" </it>was not included in the database of the system. It is also important for routine clinical microbiology laboratories to know the limitation of the automated Vitek 2 system for the accurate identification of <it>Pasteurella </it>species especially <it>P</it>. <it>dagmatis</it>. It should be emphasized that there still exists much room for improvement in Vitek 2 system. Significant improvement of Vitek 2 system especially in the identification of <it>Pasteurella </it>species is urgently desired.</p
