    Passive mode locking of buried heterostructure lasers with nonuniform current injection

    In this letter we report on a novel method to passively mode lock a semiconductor laser. We present experimental results of GaAlAs buried heterostructure semiconductor laser with a split contact coupled to an external cavity. The split contact structure is used to introduce a controllable amount of saturable absorption which is necessary to initiate passive mode locking. Unlike previous passive mode locking techniques, the method presented does not rely on absorption introduced by damaging the crystal and is consequently inherently more reliable. We have obtained pulses with a full width at half-maximum of 35 ps at repetition frequencies between 500 MHz and 1.5 GHz

    Few-electron quantum dots in III-V ternary alloys: role of fluctuations

    We study experimentally the electron transport properties of gated quantum dots formed in InGaAs/InP and InAsP/InP quantum well structures grown by chemical-beam epitaxy. For the case of the InGaAs quantum well, quantum dots form directly underneath narrow gate electrodes due to potential fluctuations. We measure the Coulomb-blockade diamonds in the few-electron regime of a single quantum dot and observe photon-assisted tunneling peaks under microwave irradiation. A singlet-triplet transition at high magnetic field and Coulomb-blockade effects in the quantum Hall regime are also observed. For the InAsP quantum well, an incidental triple quantum dot forms also due to potential fluctuations within a single dot layout.     Coherent Transport Through a Quadruple Point in a Few Electron Triple Dot

    A few electron double electrostatic lateral quantum dot can be transformed into a few electron triple quantum dot by applying a different combination of gate voltages. Quadruple points have been achieved at which all three dots are simultaneously on resonance. At these special points in the stability diagram four occupation configurations are possible. Both charge detection and transport experiments have been performed on this device. In this short paper we present data and confirm that transport is coherent by observing a Pi phase shift in magneto-conductance oscillations as one passes through the quadruple point.Comment: To be published in ICPS Conf.     Canine liver transplantation under nva cyclosporine versus cyclosporine

    The immunosuppressive qualities and other features of a new cyclosporine (CsA) analogue, Nva 2-cyclosporine (Nva 2-CsA) were examined using canine orthotopic liver allografts. The mean survival time was 11.8±9.6 (SD) days in dogs without treatment, 60.8±34.4 days with Nva 2-CsA and 65.1±33.0 days with CsA. Functional abnormalities indicating toxic side effects were not noted either with Nva 2-CsA or with CsA. Using the same oral dose, the rate of blood level rise and the amount of the rise were greater with Nva2-CsA. Histopathologically, Nva2-CsA the treatment was associated with the same degree of hydropic vocuolation in the pars recta of the proximal tubules as CsA treatment. Thus, in the dog, Nva2-CsA had identical immunosuppressive properties as CsA, with no functionally detectable toxicity affecting the liver and kidney. © 1986 by The Williams & Wilkins Co

    Measuring Avoidable Health Inequality with Realization of Conditional Potential Life Years (RCPLY)

    In a series of papers (Tang, Chin and Rao, 2008; and Tang, Petrie and Rao 2006 & 2007), we have tried to improve on a mortality-based health status indicator, namely age-at-death (AAD), and its associated health inequality indicators that measure the distribution of AAD. The main contribution of these papers is to propose a frontier method to separate avoidable and unavoidable mortality risks. This has facilitated the development of a new indicator of health status, namely the Realization of Potential Life Years (RePLY). The RePLY measure is based on the concept of a “frontier country” that, by construction, has the lowest mortality risks for each age-sex group amongst all countries. The mortality rates of the frontier country are used as a proxy for the unavoidable mortality rates, and the residual between the observed mortality rates and the unavoidable mortality rates are considered as avoidable morality rates. In this approach, however, countries at different levels of development are benchmarked against the same frontier country without considering their heterogeneity. The main objective of the current paper is to control for national resources in estimating (conditional) unavoidable and avoidable mortality risks for individual countries. This allows us to construct a new indicator of health status – Realization of Conditional Potential Life Years (RCPLY). The paper presents empirical results from a dataset of life tables for 167 countries from the year 2000, compiled and updated by the World Health Organization. Measures of national average health status and health inequality based on RePLY and RCPLY are presented and compared.
