Functionalizable Stereocontrolled Cyclopolyethers by Ring-Closing Metathesis as Natural Polymer Mimics

While complex stereoregular cyclic architectures are commonplace in biomacromolecules, they remain rare in synthetic polymer chemistry, limiting the potential to develop synthetic mimics or advanced materials for biomedical applications. Herein we disclose the formation of a stereocontrolled 1,4‐linked six‐membered cyclopolyether prepared by ring‐closing metathesis (RCM). Ru‐mediated RCM, with careful control of catalyst, concentration and temperature, selectively affords the six‐membered ring cyclopolymer. Under optimized reaction conditions, no metathetical degradation, macrocycle or crosslinking was observed. Post‐polymerization modification by dihydroxylation afforded a novel polymer family encompassing a poly(ethylene glycol) backbone and sugar‐like functionalities ("PEGose"). This strategy also paves the way for using RCM as an efficient method to synthesize other stereocontrolled cyclopolymers

A Case of Swallow Syncope Associated With Cold Beverage Ingestion

Swallow syncope (also known as deglutition syncope) is a relatively rare type of syncope that is treatable if diagnosed correctly. We report a case of a 39-year-old man with recurrent swallow syncope. The patient did not have structural heart disease. He developed a complete atrioventricular block upon drinking a cold beverage (Chilsung cider) while undergoing a repeated head-up tilt test. The patient was advised to avoid cold beverages and has been symptom free for 5 months

Size-selective encapsulation property of unimolecular reverse micelle consisting of hyperbranched D-glucan core and L-leucine ethyl ether shell

金沢大学理工研究域自然システム学系The synthesis of a unimolecular reverse micelle (3) consisting of hyper-branched D-glucan as the core and L-leucine ethyl ester as the shell was accomplished through the carbamation reaction of the hyperbranched D-glucan (1) with the N-carbonyl L-leucine ethyl ester (2) in pyridine at 100 °C. The polymer 3 was soluble in a large variety of organic solvents, such as methanol, acetone, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and insoluble in water, which remarkably differed from the solubility of 1. The solubilities of 3 were also changed by the substitution degrees of the L-leucine moiety. The encapsulation ability of 3 toward water-soluble dyes has been investigated. These results indicated that 3 was a unimolecular reverse micelle with an encapsulation ability toward hydrophilic dye molecules. In addition, 3 showed an molecular size-selective encapsulation ability. Copyright © 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Formation kinetics of levoglucosan from glucose in high temperature water

金沢大学理工研究域自然システム学系The application of high temperature water to produce levoglucosan from glucose was studied. The reactions were performed using a tube reactor, and the kinetics for the decomposition of glucose and levoglucosan in high temperature water was examined. The temperature dependence of the reaction rate of the glucose decomposition was of the Arrhenius type. In contrast, the reaction rates for the decomposition of levoglucosan decreased with the increasing temperature at the constant pressure of 25 MPa. The yields of levoglucosan were examined in the temperature range from 200 to 410 °C and the pressure from 5 to 25 MPa. It was found that the yields of levoglucosan increased with the decreasing pressure. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Direct polymerization of levulinic acid via Ugi multicomponent reactiont

A robust, direct and efficient approach has been developed for the utilization of levulinic acid (LevA) as a building block in the synthesis of polyamides. In this approach, there is no need for converting LevA to a cyclic monomer as the carboxylic acid and ketone groups are sufficient for incorporation into a polyamide. Optimization of reaction temperature, solvent, reactants as well as heating source have been performed for the Ugi multicomponent reaction. The obtained polyamides were characterized carefully using GPC, NMR, MALDI-ToF MS, DSC and TGA

A case of refractory cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa in a patient with hepatitis B carrier status successfully treated with tumor necrosis factor alpha blockade

We describe a patient with refractory cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (CPAN) with hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier status who was successfully treated with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) blockade, using etanercept, and we review 5 similar cases. We administered etanercept because of the occurrence of repeated flares despite aggressive therapy. C-reactive protein normalization; prednisolone dose-sparing; and absence of any adverse events, including HBV reactivation with nucleotide analogue administration, or renal dysfunction, have been achieved for 8 months. TNF-α blockade should be considered for intractable CPAN. © 2012 Japan College of Rheumatology. In Press → 出版者照会後に全文を公開
