Thaumasite form of sulfate attack in limestone cement mortars: A study on long term efficiency of mineral admixtures
Concrete and mortar made from limestone cement may exhibit a lack of durability due to the formation of thaumasite. The addition of minerals that improve the concrete durability is expected to slow down the formation of thaumasite. in this work the effect of natural pozzolana, fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and metakaolin on the thaumasite formation in limestone cement mortar is examined. A limestone cement, containing 15% w/w limestone, was used. Mortar specimens were prepared by replacing a part of limestone cement with the above minerals. The specimens were immersed in a 1.8% MgSO4 solution and cured at 5 and 25 degrees C. The status of the samples after a storage period of 5 years was reported based on visual inspection, compressive strength, mass measurements, ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements and analytical techniques. It is concluded that the use of specific minerals, as partial replacement of cement, inhibits thaumasite formation in limestone cement mortar. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Multistate Switching of Spin Selectivity in Electron Transport through Light-Driven Molecular Motors
It is established that electron transmission through chiral molecules depends on the electron's spin. This phenomenon, termed the chiral‐induced spin selectivity (CISS), effect has been observed in chiral molecules, supramolecular structures, polymers, and metal‐organic films. Which spin is preferred in the transmission depends on the handedness of the system and the tunneling direction of the electrons. Molecular motors based on overcrowded alkenes show multiple inversions of helical chirality under light irradiation and thermal relaxation. The authors found here multistate switching of spin selectivity in electron transfer through first generation molecular motors based on the four accessible distinct helical configurations, measured by magnetic‐conductive atomic force microscopy. It is shown that the helical state dictates the molecular organization on the surface. The efficient spin polarization observed in the photostationary state of the right‐handed motor coupled with the modulation of spin selectivity through the controlled sequence of helical states, opens opportunities to tune spin selectivity on‐demand with high spatio‐temporal precision. An energetic analysis correlates the spin injection barrier with the extent of spin polarization

Relationship Between Trade, Investment and Environment: A Review of Issues
The inter-linkage between economic openness and environmental repercussions is a widely researched area. The current study contributes in the existing pool of research by conducting a cross-country empirical analysis for the year 2008 by exploring the interrelationship between openness indicators (trade and investment) and environmental performance of a country. For this purpose, the analysis separately considers export orientation, import orientation, FDI inwardness and FDI outwardness of the countries in different variations of the proposed empirical model. The regression results do not provide strong support to the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH). The findings also confirm a relationship between socio-economic and socio-political factors in a country and its environmental performance
Cellular Immune Responses to Nine Mycobacterium tuberculosis Vaccine Candidates following Intranasal Vaccination
BACKGROUND: The identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis vaccines that elicit a protective immune response in the lungs is important for the development of an effective vaccine against tuberculosis. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, a comparison of intranasal (i.n.) and subcutaneous (s.c.) vaccination with the BCG vaccine demonstrated that a single moderate dose delivered intranasally induced a stronger and sustained M. tuberculosis-specific T-cell response in lung parenchyma and cervical lymph nodes of BALB/c mice than vaccine delivered subcutaneously. Both BCG and a multicomponent subunit vaccine composed of nine M. tuberculosis recombinant proteins induced strong antigen-specific T-cell responses in various local and peripheral immune compartments. Among the nine recombinant proteins evaluated, the alanine proline rich antigen (Apa, Rv1860) was highly antigenic following i.n. BCG and immunogenic after vaccination with a combination of the nine recombinant antigens. The Apa-induced responses included induction of both type 1 and type 2 cytokines in the lungs as evaluated by ELISPOT and a multiplexed microsphere-based cytokine immunoassay. Of importance, i.n. subunit vaccination with Apa imparted significant protection in the lungs and spleen of mice against M. tuberculosis challenge. Despite observed differences in the frequencies and location of specific cytokine secreting T cells both BCG vaccination routes afforded comparable levels of protection in our study. CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Overall, our findings support consideration and further evaluation of an intranasally targeted Apa-based vaccine to prevent tuberculosis
