COMPASS - a facility to study QCD

An overview on the new COMPASS II experimental programme is presented. The main topics include a study of Primakoff reactions, generalised parton distributions via deeply virtual Compton scattering and transverse momentum dependent distributions in Drell-Yan processes in the pion scattering off polarised protons. Moreover, the studies of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering on unpolarised target will be continued.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, Contribution to Hadron2011 Conference Proceedings, to appear in the proceedings of the XIV International Conference on Hadron Spectroscopy: Hadron 2011, Munich, Germany, 13-17 June 201

SMC performed an investigation of the spin structure of the nucleon by measuring deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons off polarised protons and deuterons. A summary of the results for spin structure functions and sum rules is given.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, Talk given at the Workshop on "Symmetry and Spin - PRAHA98", Prag, September 1998. Project for a DVCS measurement at COMPASS

The high energy polarised muon beam available at CERN with the option of using positive or negative muons with opposite polarisation gives COMPASS an excellent possibility to study generalised parton distributions via deeply virtual Compton scattering. In a first step we propose to use an unpolarised proton target to study the slope of the tt dependence of the differential cross section as a function of xBjx_{Bj} to observe a possible shrinkage of the nucleon with increasing xBjx_{Bj}. Furthermore, the beam charge and spin difference will be measured over a wide kinematical range to determine the Compton form factor related to the GPD HH. As a second step we consider to use a transversely polarised proton target to collect data to constrain the GPD EE. In preparation of the future measurements two DVCS test runs were performed in 2008 and 2009
