Eosinophil Hyporesponse of Jirds Induced by Microfilariae of Brugia Pahangi

Male jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were inoculated sc with 100 infective larvae of Brugia pahangi. After 16 weeks, the animals were reinoculated with a comparable number of organisms. Blood eosinophil responses during the 5 weeks subsequent to this attempt to reinfect were much lower than those of comparable naive animals, while the response to a heterologous infection (Toxocara canis) was comparable to that of controls. Mebendazole was given to infected animals for 2 weeks beginning 5 weeks (prepatent) or 16 weeks (patent) after infection. At comparable intervals after drug administration, the animals were reinoculated with infective larvae and the blood eosinophil response was measured over a 5 week period. The response in the animals treated during the prepatent period was higher than the untreated infected controls. Treatment during the patent period had no demonstrable effect. Jirds made artificially microfilaremic by intravenous inoculation of viable filaria before and after the standard infecting dose had a low eosinophil response to infective larvae

To determine the cause of brain-stem dysfunction for impotence, we studied the brain-stem function in 134 patients complaining of impotence and compared the results with their clinical records, erectile function tests, a papaverine test, dynamic cavernography and measurement of the penile brachial index. We found brain-stem dysfunction in 43% of the patients with impotence. Brain-stem dysfunctions tended to show characteristic differences in underlying disease and erectile dysfunction. We discuss the testing and direct treatment of the brain-stem dysfunction, and postulate it to be one cause of the impotence

    Sexual Stimulation Scoreを用いた性的刺激に対する勃起記録--150例の検討--

To confirm the usefulness of our new erectile function test, Psychogenic Erection Monitoring using Sexual Stimulation Score, we monitored results in 150 patients with suspected impotence. As compared with conventional methods, this new test reduced the number of false negative and positive recordings and proved a useful method for diagnosis of impotence

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A Exerts Diverse Cellular Effects via Small G Proteins, Rho and Rap

    No full text
Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) include five molecules (VEGF-A, -B, -C, -D, and placental growth factor), and have various roles that crucially regulate cellular functions in many kinds of cells and tissues. Intracellular signal transduction induced by VEGFs has been extensively studied and is usually initiated by their binding to two classes of transmembrane receptors: receptor tyrosine kinase VEGF receptors (VEGF receptor-1, -2 and -3) and neuropilins (NRP1 and NRP2). In addition to many established results reported by other research groups, we have previously identified small G proteins, especially Ras homologue gene (Rho) and Ras-related protein (Rap), as important mediators of VEGF-A-stimulated signaling in cancer cells as well as endothelial cells. This review article describes the VEGF-A-induced signaling pathways underlying diverse cellular functions, including cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis, and the involvement of Rho, Rap, and their related molecules in these pathways
