    A novel grouping strategy for reducing average distribution time in P2P file sharing

    Peer-to-Peer(P2P) file distribution has been widely used for file sharing in recent years. When compared with the traditional client-server model, the P2P model is a lot more efficient as each user can act as both a client and a server. This enables the P2P file distribution to scale well with increasing number of users. Grouping strategy has been introduced to reduce the average distribution time among peers without prolonging the total time needed to obtain a file. In this paper, a novel grouping strategy which groups peers of similar bandwidth together is introduced. We mathematically illustrate that under certain circumstances, this new grouping strategy performs better than the Greedy Grouping mechanism. To understand the performance of our grouping mechanism more comprehensively, we conduct extensive simulations.     Consensus statement on ischaemic stroke care in Hong Kong

    Objective. To issue guidelines for the care of acute stroke in Hong Kong, with the target audience of all health care professionals who are involved in acute stroke care. Participants. The Hong Kong Neurological Society and the Hong Kong Stroke Society. Evidence. The panel applied the 'rule of evidence' used by the United States Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. When there is insufficient evidence, the recommendation was based on customary practice and was circulated among the members and fellows of the two societies before coming to a consensus. Consensus process. Group meetings were held in 2002 to review the literature about acute care for patients with ischaemic stroke and to issue a consensus statement with reference to the local health care system. Participants of the meetings were appointed by the councils of The Hong Kong Neurological Society and the Hong Kong Stroke Society. The draft statement was circulated among the members and fellows of the two societies for comments before it was finalised. Conclusions. Ischaemic stroke is a heavy health care burden to Hong Kong. The current consensus statement provides a framework to establish a multidisciplinary approach towards its acute management.published_or_final_versio

    Variation of microphysics in wind bubbles: an alternative mechanism for explaining the rebrightenings in Gamma-ray burst afterglows

    Conventionally, long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be caused by the core collapses of massive stars. During the lifetime of a massive star, a stellar wind bubble environment should be produced. Furthermore, the microphysics shock parameters may vary along with the evolution of the fireball. Here, we investigate the variation of the microphysics shock parameters under the condition of wind bubble environment, and allow the microphysics shock parameters to be discontinuous at shocks in the ambient medium. It is found that our model can acceptably reproduce the rebrightenings observed in GRB afterglows, at least in some cases. The effects of various model parameters on rebrightenings are investigated. The rebrightenings observed in both the R-band and X-ray afterglow light curves of GRB 060206, GRB 070311 and GRB 071010A are reproduced in this model. © 2009 The Authors.     Photonic ultrawideband pulse generation with HNL-DSF-based phase and intensity modulator

    We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic ultrawideband (UWB) pulse (monocycle and doublet) generator based on a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF). The pulsed pump, located in the anomalous group-velocity dispersion regime of the HNL-DSF, performs as both an intensity and a phase modulator in our scheme. We experimentally prove, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, that the UWB doublet pulse can be generated when the optical carrier is located at the center of a narrow tunable filter's passband. Furthermore, the encoded doublet signal, fully compliant with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, is transmitted at 950 Mb/s through a 25-km single-mode fiber without introducing any obvious pulse distortion. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
