Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2
A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is
reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and
quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated
luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV
and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172
GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95%
confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2,
depending on the channel. The search for singly produced excited leptons and
quarks establishes upper limits on the ratio of the coupling of the excited

Search for lightest neutralino and stau pair production in light gravitino scenarios with stau NLSP
Promptly decaying lightest neutralinos and long-lived staus are searched for
in the context of light gravitino scenarios. It is assumed that the stau is the
next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and that the lightest
neutralino is the next to NLSP (NNLSP). Data collected with the Delphi detector
at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 183 \GeV are analysed. No evidence of
the production of these particles is found. Hence, lower mass limits for both
kinds of particles are set at 95% C.L.. The mass of gaugino-like neutralinos is
found to be greater than 71.5 GeV/c^2. In the search for long-lived stau,
masses less than 70.0 to 77.5 \GeVcc are excluded for gravitino masses from 10
to 150 \eVcc . Combining this search with the searches for stable heavy leptons
and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model staus a lower limit of 68.5 \GeVcc
may be set for the stau mas
Updated precision measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons
The measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons using inclusively reconstructed secondary vertices has been updated using both an improved processing of previous data and additional statistics from new data. This has reduced the statistical and systematic uncertainties and gives \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.582 \pm 0.011\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.027\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.} Combining this result with the previous result based on charged particle impact parameter distributions yields \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.575 \pm 0.010\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.026\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.
Limits on the production of scalar leptoquarks from Z (0) decays at LEP
A search has been made for pairs and for single production of scalar leptoquarks of the first and second generations using a data sample of 392000 Z0 decays from the DELPHI detector at LEP 1. No signal was found and limits on the leptoquark mass, production cross section and branching ratio were set. A mass limit at 95% confidence level of 45.5 GeV/c2 was obtained for leptoquark pair production. The search for the production of a single leptoquark probed the mass region above this limit and its results exclude first and second generation leptoquarks D0 with masses below 65 GeV/c2 and 73 GeV/c2 respectively, at 95% confidence level, assuming that the D0lq Yukawa coupling alpha(lambda) is equal to the electromagnetic one. An upper limit is also given on the coupling alpha(lambda) as a function of the leptoquark mass m(D0)

Determination of |Vcb| from the semileptonic decay B0 → D*- ℓ+ν
Semileptonic decays B → D*- ℓ+νX were selected from a sample of 3.1 million hadronic Z decays collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP. A topological search for semileptonic B decays to resonant and non-resonant D*- π+ states was performed and the ratio of the branching fractions: Br(B → D*- ℓ+νX)/Br(B → D*- ℓ+νX) + Br(B0 → D*- ℓ+ν) = 0.19 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.06(syst) was determined. Taking into account this contribution, the differential decay width of B0 → D*- ℓ+ν was measured as a function of the momentum transfer from the B to the D*- in two separate analyses, using exclusive and inclusive methods of D*- ℓ+ reconstruction. The distributions were fitted over the full momentum transfer range to extract the product of |V cb| times the normalization of the decay form factor F(q max2): F(qmax2)|Vcb| = (35.4 ± 1.9(stat) ± 2.4(syst)) • 10-3. The value of |Vcb| was computed using theoretical calculations of F(q max2), giving: |Vcb| = (38.9 ± 2.0(stat) ± 2.6(syst) ± 1.7(theory)) • 10-3. The total branching fraction Br(B0 → D*- ℓ+ν) was determined to be: Br(B0 → D*- ℓ+ν) = (5.52 ± 0.17(stat) ± 0.68(syst))%
Search for pair-produced heavy scalars in Z0 decays
A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into quarks is described, based on statistics of around 1.7 million hadronic Zo decays detected in DELPHI. Despite the very high background from standard hadronic decays of the Zo, masses in the range up to 43.5 GeV/c2 are excluded at the 95% confidence level. After combination with a search for leptonic decays, this mass limit is extended to cover all branching ratios. A similar analysis sets new limits on the possible production of any pair-produced heavy scalar decaying into a pair of jets, such as neutral Higgs bosons in a two doublet scheme and diquarks. © 1994 Springer-Verlag
Lifetime of charged and neutral B hadrons using event topology
The lifetimes of charged and neutral B hadrons have been measured using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP between 1991 and 1993. B hadrons are tagged as jets with a secondary vertex and the charge of the B candidate is taken to be the sum of the charges of the particles in the secondary vertex. Approximately 1,434,000 multihadronic Z0 decays yielded 1817 B hadron candidates. The B purity was estimated to be around 99.1±0.3%, and 83% (70%) of the events measured as neutral (charged) came from neutral (charged) B's. The mean lifetimes of charged and neutral B hadrons were found to be 1.72±0.08 (stat.) ±0.06 (syst.) ps and 1.58±0.11 (stat.)±0.09 (syst.) ps respectively. The ratio of their lifertimes, τcharged/τneutral, was 1.09-0.10+0.11 (stat.)±0.08 (syst.). By making assumptions about the Bs0 and Λb0 states, the B+ and B0 meson lifetimes were determined to be τB+ = 1.72 ± 0.08 (stat.) ±0.06 (syst.) ps and τB+ = 1.63 ± 0.14 (stat.)±0.13 (syst.) ps and the ratio of their lifetimes was: τB+/τB0 = 1.06-0.11+0.13 ±0.10. The mean B lifetime was also deduced to be < τ > = 1.64 ±0.06 (stat.)±0.04 (syst.) ps. © 1995 Springer-Verlag
Upper limits on the branching ratios tau --> mu gamma and tau --> e gamma
The DELPHI collaboration has searched for lepton flavour violating decays \tau \rightarrow \mu \gamma and \tau \rightarrow e \gamma using a data sample of about 70~pb^{-1} of integrated luminosity corresponding to 81 000 produced \tau^+ \tau^- events. No candidates were found for either of the two modes. This yields branching ratio upper limits of \rm{B}( \tau \rightarrow e \gamma ) < 1.1 \times 10^{-4} and \rm{B} ( \tau \rightarrow \mu \gamma) < 6.2 \times 10^{-5} at 90\% confidence level
