Co-NMR Knight Shift of NaxCoO2 \dot yH2O Studied in Both Superconducting Regions of the Tc-nuQ3 Phase Diagram Divided by the Nonsuperconducting Phase
In the temperature (T)-nuQ3 phase diagram of NaxCoO2 \dot yH2O, there exist
two superconducting regions of nuQ3 separated by the nonsuperconducting region,
where nuQ3 is usually estimated from the peak position of the 59Co-NQR spectra
of the 5/2-7/2 transition and well-approximated here as nuQ3~3nuQ,nuQ being the
interaction energy between the nuclear quadrupole moment and the electric field
gradient. We have carried out measurements of the 59Co-NMR Knight shift (K) for
a single crystal in the higher-nuQ3 superconducting phase and found that K
begins to decrease with decreasing T at Tc for both magnetic field directions
parallel and perpendicular to CoO2-planes. The result indicates together with
the previous ones that the superconducting pairs are in the spin-singlet state
in both phases, excluding the possibility of the spin-triplet superconductivity
in this phase diagram. The superconductivity of this system spreads over the
wide nuQ3 regions, but is suppressed in the narrow region located at the middle
point of the region possibly due to charge instability.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Nature of magnetic coupling between Mn ions in as-grown GaMnAs studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism
The magnetic properties of as-grown GaMnAs have been
investigated by the systematic measurements of temperature and magnetic field
dependent soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The {\it intrinsic}
XMCD intensity at high temperatures obeys the Curie-Weiss law, but residual
spin magnetic moment appears already around 100 K, significantly above Curie
temperature (), suggesting that short-range ferromagnetic correlations are
developed above . The present results also suggest that antiferromagnetic
interaction between the substitutional and interstitial Mn (Mn) ions
exists and that the amount of the Mn affects .Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Non-collinear Magnetic Order in the Double Perovskites: Double Exchange on a Geometrically Frustrated Lattice
Double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6 usually involve a transition metal
ion, B, with a large magnetic moment, and a non magnetic ion B'. While many
double perovskites are ferromagnetic, studies on the underlying model reveal
the possibility of antiferromagnetic phases as well driven by electron
delocalisation. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic
ground state and T_c scales of the minimal double perovskite model in three
dimensions using a combination of spin-fermion Monte Carlo and variational
calculations. In contrast to two dimensions, where the effective magnetic
lattice is bipartite, three dimensions involves a geometrically frustrated face
centered cubic (FCC) lattice. This promotes non-collinear spiral states and
`flux' like phases in addition to collinear anti-ferromagnetic order. We map
out the possible magnetic phases for varying electron density, `level
separation' epsilon_B - epsilon_B', and the crucial B'-B' (next neighbour)
hopping t'.Comment: 15 pages pdflatex + 19 figs, revision: removed redundant comment
Real Space Imaging of Spin Polarons in Zn Doped SrCu2(BO3)2
We report on the real space profile of spin polarons in the quasi
two-dimensional frustrated dimer spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 doped with 0.16% of
Zn. The 11B nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum exhibits 15 additional boron
sites near non-magnetic Zn impurities. With the help of exact diagonalizations
of finite clusters, we have deduced from the boron spectrum the distribution of
local magnetizations at the Cu sites with fine spatial resolution, providing
direct evidence for an extended spin polaron. The results are confronted with
those of other experiments performed on doped and undoped samples of
SrCu2(BO3)2.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, including supplemental materials. accepted for

Prebiotic Organic Microstructures
Micro- and sub-micrometer spheres, tubules and fiber-filament soft structures have been synthesized in our experiments conducted with 3 MeV proton irradiations of a mixture of simple inorganic constituents, CO, N2 and H2O. We analysed the irradiation products, with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). These laboratory organic structures produced wide variety of proteinous and non-proteinous amino acids after HCl hydrolysis. The enantiomer analysis for D-, L- alanine confirmed that the amino acids were abiotically synthesized during the laboratory experiment. Considering hydrothermal activity, the presence of CO2 and H2, of a ferromagnesian silicate mineral environment, of an Earth magnetic field which was much less intense during Archean times than nowadays and consequently of a proton excitation source which was much more abundant, we propose that our laboratory organic microstructures might be synthesized during Archean times. We show similarities in morphology and in formation with some terrestrial Archean microstructures and we suggest that some of the observed Archean carbon spherical and filamentous microstructures might be composed of abiogenic organic molecules. We further propose a search for such prebiotic organic signatures on Mars. This article has been posted on Nature precedings on 21 July 2010 [1]. Extinct radionuclides as source of excitation have been replaced by cosmic radiations which were much more intense 3.5 Ga ago because of a much less intense Earth magnetic field. The new version of the article has been presented at the ORIGINS conference in Montpellier in july 2011 [2] and has since been published in Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres 42 (4) 307-316, 2012.

Direct evaporative cooling of 41K into a Bose-Einstein condensate
We have investigated the collisional properties of 41K atoms at ultracold
temperature. To show the possibility to use 41K as a coolant, a Bose-Einstein
condensate of 41K atoms in the stretched state (F=2, m_F=2) was created for the
first time by direct evaporation in a magnetic trap. An upper bound of three
body loss coefficient for atoms in the condensate was determined to be 4(2)
10^{-29} cm -6 s-1. A Feshbach resonance in the F=1, m_F=-1 state was observed
at 51.42(5) G, which is in good agreement with theoretical prediction.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
