D Branes and Textures
We examine the flavor structure of the trilinear superpotential couplings
which can result from embedding the Standard Model within D brane sectors in
Type IIB orientifold models, which are examples within the Type I string
framework. We find in general that the allowed flavor structures of the Yukawa
coupling matrices to leading order are given by basic variations on the
"democratic" texture ansatz. In certain interesting cases, the Yukawa couplings
have a novel structure in which a single right-handed fermion couples
democratically at leading order to three left-handed fermions. We discuss the
viability of such a ``single right-handed democracy'' in detail; remarkably,
even though there are large mixing angles in the u,d sectors separately, the
CKM mixing angles are small. The analysis demonstrates the ways in which the
Type I superstring framework can provide a rich setting for investigating novel
resolutions to the flavor puzzle.Comment: 23 pages, references adde

Transonic separated flow predictions based on a mathematically simple, nonequilibrium turbulence closure model
A mathematically simple, turbulence closure model designed to treat transonic airfoil flows even with massive separation is described. Numerical solutions of the Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations obtained with this closure model are shown to agree well with experiments over a broad range of test conditions
Separated transonic airfoil flow calculations with a nonequilibrium turbulence model
Navier-Stokes transonic airfoil calculations based on a recently developed nonequilibrium, turbulence closure model are presented for a supercritical airfoil section at transonic cruise conditions and for a conventional airfoil section at shock-induced stall conditions. Comparisons with experimental data are presented which show that this nonequilibrium closure model performs significantly better than the popular Baldwin-Lomax and Cebeci-Smith equilibrium algebraic models when there is boundary-layer separation that results from the inviscid-viscous interactions
Toward High-Precision Astrometry with WFPC2. I. Deriving an Accurate PSF
The first step toward doing high-precision astrometry is the measurement of
individual stars in individual images, a step that is fraught with dangers when
the images are undersampled. The key to avoiding systematic positional error in
undersampled images is to determine an extremely accurate point-spread function
(PSF). We apply the concept of the {\it effective} PSF, and show that in images
that consist of pixels it is the ePSF, rather than the often-used instrumental
PSF, that embodies the information from which accurate star positions and
magnitudes can be derived. We show how, in a rich star field, one can use the
information from dithered exposures to derive an extremely accurate effective
PSF by iterating between the PSF itself and the star positions that we measure
with it. We also give a simple but effective procedure for representing spatial
variations of the HST PSF. With such attention to the PSF, we find that we are
able to measure the position of a single reasonably bright star in a single
image with a precision of 0.02 pixel (2 mas in WF frames, 1 mas in PC), but
with a systematic accuracy better than 0.002 pixel (0.2 mas in WF, 0.1 mas in
PC), so that multiple observations can reliably be combined to improve the
accuracy by .Comment: 33 pp. text + 15 figs.; accepted by PAS
Nonuniqueness in a minimal model for cell motility
Two–phase flow models have been used previously to model cell motility, however these have rapidly become very complicated, including many physical processes, and are opaque. Here we demonstrate that even the simplest one–dimensional, two–phase, poroviscous, reactive flow model displays a number of behaviours relevant to cell crawling. We present stability analyses that show that an asymmetric perturbation is required to cause a spatially uniform, stationary strip of cytoplasm to move, which is relevant to cell polarization. Our numerical simulations identify qualitatively distinct families of travelling–wave solution that co–exist at certain parameter values. Within each family, the crawling speed of the strip has a bell–shaped dependence on the adhesion strength. The model captures the experimentally observed behaviour that cells crawl quickest at intermediate adhesion strengths, when the substrate is neither too sticky nor too slippy
Redshifts of the Gravitational Lenses MG1131+0456 and B1938+666
The redshifts of the gravitational lens galaxies in MG1131+0456 and B1938+666
are 0.844 and 0.881 respectively. Both are early-type galaxies lying at the
redshifts predicted by assuming that they are early-type galaxies with old
stellar populations lying on the fundamental plane. We also find evidence for a
foreground group of galaxies at z=0.343 near MG1131+0456. The source redshifts
are predicted to be >1.8 in both systems, but they are so red that infrared
spectra will be required to determine their redshifts.Comment: 10 pages, AASTeX Latex, including 1 JPEG and 2 postscript figures,

Design of a monitor and simulation terminal (master) for space station telerobotics and telescience
Based on Space Station and planetary spacecraft communication time delays and bandwidth limitations, it will be necessary to develop an intelligent, general purpose ground monitor terminal capable of sophisticated data display and control of on-orbit facilities and remote spacecraft. The basic elements that make up a Monitor and Simulation Terminal (MASTER) include computer overlay video, data compression, forward simulation, mission resource optimization and high level robotic control. Hardware and software elements of a MASTER are being assembled for testbed use. Applications of Neural Networks (NNs) to some key functions of a MASTER are also discussed. These functions are overlay graphics adjustment, object correlation and kinematic-dynamic characterization of the manipulator
