    Lacrimal gland adenoma in a sheep

    The lacrimal gland is a diamond-shaped, tubuloalveolar gland that secretes the serous component of tears. A four-year-old female crossbreed sheep suffering from left eye protrusion was referred to a Veterinary Hospital. Ophthalmic examination revealed epiphora, superficial ulcerative keratitis, cor-neal edema and neovascularisation. Moreover, ultrasound examination showed a large heterogeneous mass with variable reflectivity in the intraconal and extraconal spaces. Grossly, a 2.5×1.5×0.5 cm oval firm grayish mass was observed. Histopathologically, the mass was composed mainly by tubules with two cell types including cuboidal luminal epithelial cells and peripheral myoepithelial cells. The tubular structures were separated by proliferating myoepithelial cells. Mitotic figures, cellular pleomorphism and atypia were not seen. Immunohistochemically, most of the luminal epithelial cells showed an immunopositive reaction with a cytokeratin (AE1/AE3) marker. On the basis of these findings, the mass was diagnosed as a lacrimal gland adenoma

    Gingival neoplasm presenting as an ossifying epulis in a parrot cichlid fish (Hoplarchus psittacus)

    This report describes the histopathological features of an ossifying epulis, measuring 1.5 × 1 × 1 cm in length, width and height, respectively, on the lingual surface of the lower jaw of a 2.5 year-old parrot cichlid (Hoplarchus psittacus) from a commercial aquarium. The tumor had appeared in the oral cavity three months prior to its introduction to the laboratory for diagnosis. Grossly, the neoplastic mass was pale-tan with a shiny, smooth surface and coalescing areas of hemorrhage. Microscopically, the overlying epithelium was hyperplastic and extended deeply into the underlying stroma. The stroma consisted of well vascularized collagenous tissue and neoplastic fibroblasts associated with irregular cords and islands of mineral deposition as dentin-like materials confirmed by Masson's trichrome and Goldner's trichrome staining

    Susceptibility of various cell lines to Neospora caninum tachyzoites cultivation

    Neospora caninum is a coccidian protozoan parasite which is a major cause of bovine abortions and neonatal mortality in cattle, sheep, goat and horse. Occasionally, cultured cells are used for isolation and multiplication of the agent in vitro with several purposes. In this study the tachyzoite yields of N. caninum were compared in various cell cultures as the host cell lines. Among the cell cultures tested, two presented good susceptibility to the agent: cell lines Vero and MA-104. SW742 and TLI (in vitro suspension culture of lymphoid cells infected with Theileria lestoquardi) showed moderate sensitivity. No viable tachyzoite were detected in the culture of MDCK and McCoy cell lines. These results demonstrate that MA-104 and SW742 cells present adequate susceptibility to N. caninum compared to Vero cells, which have been largely used to multiply the parasite in vitro. Moreover, these have easy manipulation, fast multiplication and relatively low nutritional requirements. In addition, the result of this study showed that TLI cell line as a suspension cell culture is susceptible to Nc-1 tachyzoites infection and could be used as an alternative host cell line for tachyzoites culture in vitro studies

    Pathological, bacteriological, and molecular characteristics of natural outbreaks of Johne's disease in goats of Fars Province, Iran

    Objective/Background: Johne's disease, also called paratuberculosis, is a very important chronic infectious disease of ruminants worldwide. The causative agent is an acid-fast bacterium, Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP). Finding a precise method for detecting MAP is essential for the control and eradication of this disease in small ruminant herds. Methods: In this study, appropriate samples were obtained from the ileum, cecum, colon, and mesenteric lymph nodes of 10 suspected naturally infected goats. Each sample was divided to two parts: the first part was stored at −20°C for bacteriologic culture and the second part was placed in 10% neutral formalin for molecular and histopathologic examination. To isolate MAP, the double incubation method was used for decontaminating the tissues and Middlebrook 7H9 broth-based culture associated with OADC (oleic acid, albumin, dextrose, and catalase) supplement with/without mycobactin J were used. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR; IS 900) was performed for media with positive acid-fast staining. Results: Acid-fast staining was positive in 40% of ileum samples, 50% of cecum samples, 40% of colon samples, and 50% of lymph node samples with mycobactin J and in 60% of ileum samples, 60% of cecum samples, 40% of colon samples, and 40% of lymph node samples without mycobactin J. All samples were confirmed by IS 900 PCR assay. Diffuse granulomatous enteritis with multibacillary lesions and paucibacillary multifocal lymphadenitis associated with calcification were diagnosed histopathologically. Conclusion: MAP detection in intestinal content and in tissues is quite necessary for the diagnosis, control, and eradication of this disease in small ruminant herds

    An Unusual Occurrence of Actinobacillosis in Heifers and Cows in A Dairy Herd in Tehran suburb-Iran

    ABSTRACT An unusual occurrence of actinobacillosis was diagnosed in 4 heifers aged 8-15 months and 2 cattle in a dairy herd with 190 Iranian Holstein breed. Anorexia, dysphagia, drooling of normal or foodtinged saliva and presence of warts-like lesions on the dorsal surface of tongue shaft were observed in a 15-month-old heifer without showing protrusion of tongue or presenting woody tongue and no involvement of either sulcus lingualis or tongue base. In addition to tongue, soft tissues of oral cavity and pharyngeal region including lymph nodes, salivary glands and tonsils were contained multiple whitish nodules. Histopathologically, typical pyogranulomas of actinobacillosis contained radiating eosinophilic clubs surrounded by many neutrophils were diagnosed. Actinobacillus lignieresii was isolated from the lesions in pure culture. Clinical examination of other animals revealed the presence of different degrees of granulomatous abscesses in soft tissues including skin around mandibles in at least 3 heifers aged 8-11 months and 2 cattle. Due to 4 recent droughty years feeding the heifers, dry cows and low milk producing cattle by cheap oat and wheat straw mixed with plant awns could be the cause of this event
