Retrospective Reports of Childhood Trauma in Adults with ADHD
Although studies have documented higher prevalence of abuse in children with ADHD, no studies have investigated
childhood reports of abuse in individuals identified withADHDin adulthood. Method: FortyADHDwomen, 17ADHD
males, 17 female controls, and 40 male controls complete the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and other measures of
psychosocial functioning. Results: Emotional abuse and neglect are more common among men and women with ADHD as
compared to controls. Sexual abuse and physical neglect are more commonly reported by females with ADHD. Although
childhood abuse is significantly correlated with depression and anxiety in adulthood, having ADHD is a better predictor of
poorer psychosocial functioning in adulthood. Conclusion: Clinicians are alerted that patients with ADHD symptoms have a
high probability of childhood abuse
Candida pericarditis presenting with cardiac tamponade and multiple organ failure after combined damage control thoracotomy and laparotomy with splenectomy in a trauma patient: Case report and review of literature
Candida pericarditis is a rare condition which has previously been described after cardiothoracic surgery and immunosuppressive states (Geisler et al., 1981; Eng et al., 1981; Kraus et al., 1988; Kaufman et al., 1988; Tang et al., 2009; Glower et al., 1990; Carrel et al., 1991; Rabinovici et al., 1997; Canver et al., 1998; Farjah et al., 2005; Gronemeyer et al., 1982 [1-11]). We describe the case of a 19-year-old male blunt trauma patient, who survived a damage control thoracotomy and laparotomy with splenectomy, who later developed a loculated Candida pericardial effusion, complicated with cardiac tamponade and multiple organ failure, and required antifungals and surgical reintervention with thoracotomy for drainage. A literature search of the reported cases demonstrates that Candida pericarditis is indeed a rare but fatal condition if not identified and treated appropriately. This article discusses the difficulties we encountered while recognizing the disorder in our patient and proposes a guideline to adequately treat the condition in an effective and timely manner. Candida pericarditis poses a special challenge for the physician since its correct diagnosis and management requires a multidisciplinary approach
Susceptibility testing by polymerase chain reaction DNA quantitation: A method to measure drug resistance of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 isolates
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA quantitation (PDQ) susceptibility testing rapidly and directly measures nucleoside sensitivity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) isolates. PCR is used to quantitate the amount of HIV-1 DNA synthesized after in vitro infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The relative amounts of HIV-1 DNA in cell lysates from cultures maintained at different drug concentrations reflect drug inhibition of virus replication. The rusults of PDQ susceptibility testing of 2- or 3-day cultures are supported by assays measuring HIV-1 p24 antigen production in supernatants of 7- or 10-day cultures. DNA sequence analyses to identify mutations in the reverse transcriptase gene that cause resistance to 3′-azido-3′-deoxythymidine also support the PDQ results. With the PDQ method, both infectivity titration and susceptibility testing can be performed on supernatants from primary cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. PDQ susceptibility testing should facilitate epidemiologic studies of the clinical significance of drug-resistant HIV-1 isolates
Quasifree kaon-photoproduction from nuclei in a relativistic approach
We compute the recoil polarization of the lambda-hyperon and the photon
asymmetry for the quasifree photoproduction of kaons in a relativistic
impulse-approximation approach. Our motivation for studying polarization
observables is threefold. First, polarization observables are more effective
discriminators of subtle dynamics than the unpolarized cross section. Second,
earlier nonrelativistic calculations suggest an almost complete insensitivity
of polarization observables to distortions effects. Finally, this insensitivity
entails an enormous simplification in the theoretical treatment. Indeed, by
introducing the notion of a ``bound-nucleon propagator'' we exploit Feynman's
trace techniques to develop closed-form, analytic expressions for all
photoproduction observables. Moreover, our results indicate that polarization
observables are also insensitive to relativistic effects and to the nuclear
target. Yet, they are sensitive to the model parameters, making them ideal
tools for the study of modifications to the elementary amplitude --- such as in
the production, propagation, and decay of nucleon resonances --- in the nuclear

Hyperon-nucleon scattering and hyperon masses in the nuclear medium
We analyze low-energy hyperon-nucleon scattering using an effective field
theory in next-to-leading order. By fitting experimental cross sections for
laboratory hyperon momenta below 200 MeV/c and using information from the
hypertriton we determine twelve contact-interaction coefficients. Based on
these we discuss the low-density expansion of hyperon mass shifts in the

Drum vortons in high density QCD
Recently it was shown that high density QCD supports of number of topological
defects. In particular, there are U(1)_Y strings that arise due to K^0
condensation that occurs when the strange quark mass is relatively large. The
unique feature of these strings is that they possess a nonzero K^+ condensate
that is trapped on the core. In the following we will show that these strings
(with nontrivial core structure) can form closed loops with conserved charge
and currents trapped on the string worldsheet. The presence of conserved
charges allows these topological defects, called vortons, to carry angular
momentum, which makes them classically stable objects. We also give arguments
demonstrating that vortons carry angular momentum very efficiently (in terms of
energy per unit angular momentum) such that they might be the important degrees
of freedom in the cores of neutron stars.Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Atomic Dark Matter
We propose that dark matter is dominantly comprised of atomic bound states.
We build a simple model and map the parameter space that results in the early
universe formation of hydrogen-like dark atoms. We find that atomic dark matter
has interesting implications for cosmology as well as direct detection:
Protohalo formation can be suppressed below for weak scale dark matter due to Ion-Radiation interactions in the
dark sector. Moreover, weak-scale dark atoms can accommodate hyperfine
splittings of order 100 \kev, consistent with the inelastic dark matter
interpretation of the DAMA data while naturally evading direct detection
