    The First VERITAS Telescope

The first atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) has been in operation since February 2005. We present here a technical description of the instrument and a summary of its performance. The calibration methods are described, along with the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the telescope and comparisons between real and simulated data. The analysis of TeV γ\gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula, including the reconstructed energy spectrum, is shown to give results consistent with earlier measurements. The telescope is operating as expected and has met or exceeded all design specifications.Comment: Accepted by Astroparticle Physic

Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV using 318pb-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select tt̄ decays into the final states eν+jets and μν+jets, in which at least one b quark from the t-quark decays is identified using a secondary vertex-finding algorithm. Assuming a top quark mass of 178GeV/c2, we measure a cross section of 8.7±0.9(stat)-0. 9+1.1(syst)pb. We also report the first observation of tt̄ with significance greater than 5σ in the subsample in which both b quarks are identified, corresponding to a cross section of 10.1-1.4+1.6(stat)-1.3+2.0(syst) pb. © 2006 The American Physical Society

Measurement of the W+W- Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Dilepton Events

We present a measurement of the W+W- production cross section using 184/pb of ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Using the dilepton decay channel W+W- -> l+l-vvbar, where the charged leptons can be either electrons or muons, we find 17 candidate events compared to an expected background of 5.0+2.2-0.8 events. The resulting W+W- production cross section measurement of sigma(ppbar -> W+W-) = 14.6 +5.8 -5.1 (stat) +1.8 -3.0 (syst) +-0.9 (lum) pb agrees well with the Standard Model expectation.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. Measurement of charged-particle multiplicities in gluon and quark jets in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.8 TeV

    Get PDF
We report the first largely model independent measurement of charged particle multiplicities in quark and gluon jets, N-q and N-g, produced at the Fermilab Tevatron in p (p) over bar collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurements are made for jets with average energies of 41 and 53 GeV by counting charged particle tracks in cones with opening angles of θ(c)=0.28, 0.36, and 0.47 rad around the jet axis. The corresponding jet hardness Q=E-jetθ(c) varies in the range from 12 to 25 GeV. At Q=19.2 GeV, the ratio of multiplicities r=N-g/N-q is found to be 1.64± 0.17, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are added in quadrature. The results are in agreement with resummed perturbative QCD calculations

The European Physical Journal C-Particles and Fields-publishes scientific manuscripts of relevance to the scientific community following careful and strict peer reviewing and, whenever appropriate and necessary, through discussion with the authors, so as to optimise scientific content and style of presentation prior to publication. In some cases significant disagreement between authors and referees (and/or editors) of the journal cannot be resolved despite all efforts and best of intentions. While the journal-notwithstanding any appeals-retains the right to reject such manuscripts, the editors of this journal may decide, in cases deemed of exceptional interest and potential significance for the field, to accept the manuscript for publication, to amend it by "comments" of the editor(s) in charge and, if appropriate, by a "reply" of the authors of the commented manuscript. Observation of single top quark production and measurement of |V tb| with CDF

We report the observation of electroweak single top quark production in 3.2fb⊃-1 of pp̄ collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at √s=1.96TeV. Candidate events in the W+jets topology with a leptonically decaying W boson are classified as signal-like by four parallel analyses based on likelihood functions, matrix elements, neural networks, and boosted decision trees. These results are combined using a super discriminant analysis based on genetically evolved neural networks in order to improve the sensitivity. This combined result is further combined with that of a search for a single top quark signal in an orthogonal sample of events with missing transverse energy plus jets and no charged lepton. We observe a signal consistent with the standard model prediction but inconsistent with the background-only model by 5.0 standard deviations, with a median expected sensitivity in excess of 5.9 standard deviations. We measure a production cross section of 2.3-0.5+0.6(stat+sys)pb, extract the value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vtb|=0.91-0.11+0. 11(stat+sys)±0.07(theory), and set a lower limit |Vtb|>0.71 at the 95%C.L., assuming mt=175GeV/c2

Measurement of dσ/dy of Drell-Yan e+e- pairs in the Z mass region from pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV

We report on a CDF measurement of the total cross section and rapidity distribution, dσ/dy, for γ*Z→e+e- events in the Z boson mass region (66<Mee<116 GeV/c2) produced in pp- collisions at s=1.96 TeV with 2.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The measured cross section of 257±16 pb and dσ/dy distribution are compared with Next-to-Leading-Order (NLO) and Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order (NNLO) QCD theory predictions with CTEQ and MRST/MSTW parton distribution functions (PDFs). There is good agreement between the experimental total cross section and dσ/dy measurements with theoretical calculations with the most recent NNLO PDFs. © 2010 Elsevier B.V
