Microorganisms in selected sulphuric springs of the Polish Carpathians

Microorganisms colonising sulphurous waters were found at the bottoms of the spring niches and along spring outflows. Five springs from the Carpathians and two from the Carpathian Foredeep were selected for investigations. Sulphurous flora is represented mainly by sulphuric bacteria. They occur as individual threads, spider-webs, festoons, encrustations and covers. Their colours may be white, creamy, violet, pink and purple. Altogether 31 microorganism taxa: bacteria (16), cyanoprokaryota (3) and algae (12) were identified and illustrated. Instantons and the Potential of the Triple-Well Shape

Applications of instantons to compute quantum-mechanical problems with spinless particles are shown. Effectivness and correctness of this method as a non-perturbative method is compared with the variational method applied to the potential of the triple-well shape. Limits of applicability of instanton solutions to compute energy of the ground state are also considered

Air force command, national and allied aspect, conditions and directions for change

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie analizy funkcjonalności systemu dowodzenia sił powietrznych w aspekcie narodowym i sojuszniczym. Autorzy artykułu szczególną uwagę skupili na wykazaniu mankamentów systemu dowodzenia siłami powietrznymi w czasie pokoju, kryzysu i wojny, zwłaszcza w toku realizacji zadań na rzecz systemu bezpieczeństwa narodowego. Dlatego też w treści artykułu przedstawiono dogłębną analizę funkcjonowania stanowisk dowodzenia jednostek sił powietrznych na wszystkich poziomach organizacyjnych, od Dowództwa Sił Powietrznych RP, do szczebla pododdziału, wskazując na problemy kompetencyjne i funkcjonalne w toku realizacji zadań. W części końcowej artykułu zaprezentowano potencjalne zadania sił powietrznych w systemie bezpieczeństwa narodowego, wskazując na uwarunkowania ich realizacji wynikające z systemu dowodzenia.This article aims to present the analysis of functionality of the air force command system in national and allied aspects. The authors have focused attention on demonstrating the shortcomings of the air force command systems in times of peace, crisis and war, especially in the course of implementation of tasks for the national security system. Therefore, the article presents an in-depth analysis of the functioning of the command posts of the air force at all organizational levels, from the air force command down to the squadron level, pointing to competency and functional problems during the implementation of tasks. The final part of the article presents a potential missions of the air force in the national security system, indicating the conditions related to the command system

Balneotherapy use of brines in the Spa Salt Mine „Wieliczka”

Salt mining at the Wieliczka mine that had lasted over a period of 700 years came to a stop on 30 June 1996. Currently the mine represents an object of culture, a museum, and also a balneotherapeutic facility. It is the place of birth of the so called subterraneotherapy, i.e., an innovative method of curing that utilizes a specific microclimate in underground chambers of inoperative salt workings. The method was finally developed by Professor Mieczysław Skulimowski, who revived the efforts of a 19th century mine physician Feliks Boczkowski. The salt mine has currently obtained a spa status, and its mineral waters (brines) from the outflows No’s W-VII-16 and W-VI-32 have been recognized as therapeutic ones. The most commonly treated are the patients with non-infectious problems of upper and lower respiratory tracts. Since November 2014 the Spa of the Wieliczka Salt Mine has also a graduation tower in the Kinga Park. In these tower is used the brine from the flow-VII-16 with a depth of 250 m. It is water Cl-Na type and 68.9 g/dm3 mineralization. The yield of salt water from this flow is 9 m3/h

Bioactive Glass Coatings Synthesized by Pulsed Laser Deposition Technique

Surface modification of medical implants is often required to improve their biocompatibility or, through bioactive properties of the surface material, facilitate its intergrowth with the living tissue. Bioactive-glass coatings can serve that purpose for the bone implants. We report a successful preparation of silicate-phosphate bioactive-glass coating on titanium substrate using the pulsed laser deposition method and present the coating characterization in terms of bonding configuration and chemical activity. The former was studied with high-resolution Raman microspectroscopy and revealed the presence of structural units responsible for the material's bioactivity. The bioactivity was also tested directly, in vitro, by soaking the samples in the simulated body fluid and examining the result with the Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectrum, typical of hydroxyapatite was observed proving that the bone-like-material formed on the coating's surface

Effect of hyaluronan on dehydration and water properties of contact lens hydrogels

Jednym z potencjalnych sposobów ograniczenia niepożądanej z punktu widzenia pacjenta utraty wody z soczewek kontaktowych są krople nawilżające oparte na roztworach hialuronianu sodu (HA). DSC oraz grawimetria zostały wykorzystane w celu zbadania ich wpływu na strukturę wody i dehydratację hydrożelowych soczewek kontaktowych Acuvue Moist i Proclear 1-Day. Jak wskazują wyniki, materiały mogą różnie reagować na aplikację kropli nawilżających o różnych stężeniach HA poprzez zmianę rozkładu wody w polimerze. Podobnie dynamika dehydratacji ulega zmianom w zależności od badanego materiału. Nie ulega jednak wątpliwości, że stosowanie roztworów HA zwiększa uwodnienie obydwu badanych materiałów, co może korzystnie wpływać na zwilżalność ich powierzchni, redukując ewentualny dyskomfort związany z dehydratacją soczewki podczas noszenia.One of the potential way of restricting dehydration that is undesirable from the patient point of view is to use hydrating eyedrops based on hyaluronan sodium (HA) solutions. DSC and gravimetry were used in order to investigate their influence on states of water and dehydration of hydrogel contact lenses Acuvue Moist and Proclear 1-Day. As our results indicate, both materials may respond differently to application of rewetting drops of different HA concentrations by change in water structure. Similarly, dynamics of dehydration is changing according to the material. Nevertheless, the use of HA solutions enhance water content of both materials studied, which may be beneficial for lens surface wettability, reducing possible discomfort during normal lens wear

Efektywność działania kropli nawilżających w łagodzeniu objawów dyskomfortu u użytkowników soczewek kontaktowych

Objawy suchości, pieczenia lub podrażnienia to jedne z nierzadko zgłaszanych dolegliwości wśród użytkowników soczewek kontaktowych, które mogą być przyczyną porzucenia soczewek. Krople nawilżające są doraźnym i jednym z najczęściej wybieranych sposobów na zniwelowanie dyskomfortu. Badania dotyczące użytkowania kropli nawilżających zwykle dotyczą pacjentów z suchym okiem, jednak nie ma danych na temat oceny skuteczności ich stosowania przez użytkowników soczewek, mimo że są oni grupą szczególnie podatną na objawy typowe dla suchego oka. W celu określenia efektywności kropli nawilżających, przeprowadzono ankietę wśród doświadczonych użytkowników noszących miękkie soczewki kontaktowe i stosujących regularnie krople nawilżające typu sztuczne łzy.The symptoms of dryness, burning or irritation are frequently re ported complaints among users of contact lenses, which may cause contact lens dropout. Rewetting eye drops are one of the most popular ways to overcome the discomfort. Usually re- searches focus on the patients with dry eye, but there is no data on the efficacy of artificial tears in contact lens wearers, even though they are particularly susceptible group to the symptoms of dry eye.
