Orbital Order Effect of Two-Dimensional Spin Gap System for CaV4O9
Effects of possible orbital order in magnetic properties of two-dimensional
spin gap system for CaVO are investigated theoretically. After
analyzing experimental data, we show that single orbital models assumed in the
literature are insufficient to reproduce the data. To understand the origin of
the discrepancy, we assume that in state of V, and
orbitals have substantial contributions in the lowest-energy atomic level which
leads to a double-degeneracy. We study possible configurations of the orbital
order. By exact diagonalization and perturbation expansion, we calculate the
susceptibility, wavenumber dependence of low-lying excitations and equal-time
spin-spin correlations which is related to integrated intensity of the neutron
inelastic scattering. These quantities sensitively depend on the configuration
of the orbital order. The calculated results for some configurations of the
orbital order reproduce many experimental results much better than the previous
single-orbital models. However some discrepancy still remains to completely
reproduce all of the reported experimental results. To understand the origin of
these discrepancies, we point out the possible importance of the partially
occupied orbital in addition to orbital order of partially filled
and orbitals.Comment: 19 pages LATEX, 15 postscript figures, using jpsj.sty,to be published

Topological Landau-Ginzburg theory with a rational potential and the dispersionless KP hierarchy
Based on the dispersionless KP (dKP) theory, we give a comprehensive study of
the topological Landau-Ginzburg (LG) theory characterized by a rational
potential. Writing the dKP hierarchy in a general form, we find that the
hierarchy naturally includes the dispersionless (continuous) limit of Toda
hierarchy and its generalizations having finite number of primaries. Several
flat solutions of the topological LG theory are obtained in this formulation,
and are identified with those discussed by Dubrovin. We explicitly construct
gravitational descendants for all the primary fields. Giving a residue formula
for the 3-point functions of the fields, we show that these 3-point functions
satisfy the topological recursion relation. The string equation is obtained as
the generalized hodograph solutions of the dKP hierarchy, which show that all
the gravitational effects to the constitutive equations (2-point functions) can
be renormalized into the coupling constants in the small phase space.Comment: 54 pages, Plain TeX. Figure could be obtained from Kodam
Effect of Quantum Fluctuations on Magnetic Ordering in CaVO
We present a theoretical model for CaVO: the -depleted square
spin- Heisenberg model which includes both the nearest-neighbor coupling
() and the next-nearest-neighbor coupling (), where and are
antiferromagnetic. Recent experiments of the neutron diffraction by Harashina
et.al. report the magnetic ordering at low temperatures, which may be called as
a stripe phase. It is shown that the observed spin structure is not stable in
the classical theory. By employing the modified spin wave theory, we show that
the stripe phase is stabilized by the quantum fluctuations for .
In CaVO, the coupling constants are estimated as by
comparing the theoretical and experimental results.Comment: submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Quantum fields in gravity
We give a brief description of some compelling connections between general
relativity and thermodynamics through i) the semi-classical tunnelling
method(s) and ii) the field-theoretical modelling of Unruh-DeWitt detectors. In
both approaches it is possible to interpret some quantities in a
thermodynamical frame.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, contribution to the proceedings of the

Finding Galaxy Groups In Photometric Redshift Space: the Probability Friends-of-Friends (pFoF) Algorithm
We present a structure finding algorithm designed to identify galaxy groups
in photometric redshift data sets: the probability friends-of-friends (pFoF)
algorithm. This algorithm is derived by combining the friends-of-friends
algorithm in the transverse direction and the photometric redshift probability
densities in the radial dimension. The innovative characteristic of our
group-finding algorithm is the improvement of redshift estimation via the
constraints given by the transversely connected galaxies in a group, based on
the assumption that all galaxies in a group have the same redshift. Tests using
the Virgo Consortium Millennium Simulation mock catalogs allow us to show that
the recovery rate of the pFoF algorithm is larger than 80% for mock groups of
at least 2\times10^{13}M_{\sun}, while the false detection rate is about 10%
for pFoF groups containing at least net members. Applying the algorithm
to the CNOC2 group catalogs gives results which are consistent with the mock
catalog tests. From all these results, we conclude that our group-finding
algorithm offers an effective yet simple way to identify galaxy groups in
photometric redshift catalogs.Comment: AJ accepte
Meta-Plaquette Expansion for the Triplet Excitation Spectrum in CaVO
We study antiferromagnetic, Heisenberg models with nearest and second
neighbor interactions on the one-fifth depleted square lattice which describes
the spin degrees of freedom in the spin-gap system CaVO. The
meta-plaquette expansion for the triplet excitation spectrum is extended to
fifth order, and the results are compared with experimental data on
CaVO. We attempt to locate the phase boundary between magnetically
ordered and gapped phases.Comment: 4 figure
Galactic Wind Signatures around High Redshift Galaxies
We carry out cosmological chemodynamical simulations with different strengths
of supernova (SN) feedback and study how galactic winds from star-forming
galaxies affect the features of hydrogen (HI) and metal (CIV and OVI)
absorption systems in the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We find that
the outflows tend to escape to low density regions, and hardly affect the dense
filaments visible in HI absorption. As a result, the strength of HI absorption
near galaxies is not reduced by galactic winds, but even slightly increases. We
also find that a lack of HI absorption for lines of sight (LOS) close to
galaxies, as found by Adelberger et al., can be created by hot gas around the
galaxies induced by accretion shock heating. In contrast to HI, metal
absorption systems are sensitive to the presence of winds. The models without
feedback can produce the strong CIV and OVI absorption lines in LOS within 50
kpc from galaxies, while strong SN feedback is capable of creating strong CIV
and OVI lines out to about twice that distance. We also analyze the mean
transmissivity of HI, CIV, and OVI within 1 h Mpc from star-forming
galaxies. The probability distribution of the transmissivity of HI is
independent of the strength of SN feedback, but strong feedback produces LOS
with lower transmissivity of metal lines. Additionally, strong feedback can
produce strong OVI lines even in cases where HI absorption is weak. We conclude
that OVI is probably the best tracer for galactic winds at high redshift.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, ApJ in press. Higher resolution version

Minisuperspace Examples of Quantization Using Canonical Variables of the Ashtekar Type: Structure and Solutions
The Ashtekar variables have been use to find a number of exact solutions in
quantum gravity and quantum cosmology. We investigate the origin of these
solutions in the context of a number of canonical transformations (both complex
and real) of the basic Hamiltonian variables of general relativity. We are able
to present several new solutions in the minisuperspace (quantum cosmology)
sector. The meaning of these solutions is then discussed.Comment: 23 pages, latex, 3 figures (uuencoded, separate file
Explicit Integration of the Full Symmetric Toda Hierarchy and the Sorting Property
We give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem of
the full symmetric Toda hierarchy. The formula is obtained by the
orthogonalization procedure of Szeg\"{o}, and is also interpreted as a
consequence of the QR factorization method of Symes \cite{symes}. The sorting
property of the dynamics is also proved for the case of a generic symmetric
matrix in the sense described in the text, and generalizations of tridiagonal
formulae are given for the case of matrices with nonzero diagonals.Comment: 13 pages, Latex
