Impact of coastal bottom trawling on target and non- target resources along the south west coast of India
The trawling is carried out almost throughout
the year in the inshore water except for
peak monsoon months. Their nonoperation
is chiefly due to the unfavourable
sea conditions or bans imposed by the
governments as in Kerala, Tamilnadu,
Andhra Pradesh or socially self-imposed
ban as in Karnataka. The excessive fishing pressure exerted by the mechanized / motorized sector in a
climatically limited coastal habitat up to a
depth of about 50 m have not only affected
the sustenance of some easily vulnerable
resources, but also challenged the very
existence of some shell fishes, fin fishes
and bottom organisms, including the biota
which are non-edible to man but vital in
the food web of all exploitable resources. The present
account pertains to the impact of the gear
along the south-west coast (Karnataka and
Kerala) trawling grounds preferably on the
non- target by catch
Effect of Thiourea on Yield and Quality of Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)
A field experiment was carried out to study the effect of five concentrations (0, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mM) of thiourea application on mother tubers on yield and quality attributes of harvested potato, variety Spunta in the region of Chott-Mariem in Tunisia. Treated tubers (Ш = 50 mm) were planted in field after breaking dormancy at a spacing of 80 cm x 30 cm according to completely randomized design (CRD) in three replications. Quality attributes of potato tubers especially fresh matter and dry matter of plant, total reducing sugars in leaves, tuber yield, number and diameter of tubers per plant and number of sprouts per tuber was measured. Soluble proteins and starch content in potato tubers were also quantified.In general we noted that application of thiourea showed significant influence on yield and on quality of tubers comparing to control. Maximum tuber yield per plant, maximum number of tubers per plant and maximum starch content was recorded with 250 mM of thiourea. Moreover, highest dry matter of potato plant was found also at this concentration. While increasing dose of thiourea thereafter it showed slight significant improvement and do not affect significantly the diameter of tubers comparing to control
HOMOCASTASTERONE: A NOVEL PLANT KETOSTEROID INDUCING HAEMATOLOGICAL CHANGES IN NORMAL AND DIABETIC MALE RAT
Objective: To study the effect of brassinosteroid keto isoform homocastasterone, in diabetic male wistar rat as an antihyperglycemic factor and to evaluate its effects on the hemodynamic parameters in rat blood.Methods: Diabetes was induced in a group (n=6) of rats with a single peritoneal injection of streptozotocin at 60 mg/kg. bw. With a treatment schedule of 15 consecutive days, control (n=6) and diabetic rats received 666µg/kg bw, of homocastasterone. Circulating blood glucose, cell count, cell indices, and MDA level was assessed.Results: Significant reduction (p<0.05) in blood glucose level and increase inRBCs, WBCs, granulocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes and platelets count(p<0.05) along with improved functional indices for HCT, PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC, MPV, PDW, PCT in homocastasterone treated diabetic group was noted. A significant reduction in RBC-MDA level (p<0.001) in the treated group was noted.Conclusion: It is suggested that brassinosteroid keto isoform homocastasterone exhibits antiglycemic effect in diabetic rat, and improves RBC, WBC, Platelet counts, haemoglobin level, and cell indices, while reducing peroxidative cell damage in RBCs.Â

Microwave induced magnetoresistance oscillations at the subharmonics of the cyclotron resonance
The magnetoresistance oscillations, which occur in a two-dimensional electron
system exposed to strong microwave radiation when the microwave frequency
coincides with the n-th subharmonic of the cyclotron frequency
have been investigated for n = 2, 3 and 4. It is shown that these
subharmonic features can be explained within a non-equilibrium energy
distribution function picture without invoking multi-photon absorption
processes. The existence of a frequency threshold above which such oscillations
disappear lends further support to this explanation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Dynamics of Selected Biomarkers in Cerebrospinal Fluid During Complex Endovascular Aortic Repair – A Pilot Study
INTRODUCTION: Ischemic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious complication of complex aortic repair. Prophylactic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage, used to decrease lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, enables monitoring of CSF biomarkers that may aid in detecting impending SCI. We hypothesized that biomarkers, previously evaluated in traumatic SCI and brain injury, would be altered in CSF over time following complex endovascular aortic repair (cEVAR). OBJECTIVES: To examine if a chosen cohort of CSF biomarker correlates to SCI and warrants further research. METHODS: A prospective observational study on patients undergoing cEVAR with extensive aortic coverage. Vital parameters and CSF samples were collected on ten occasions during 72 hours post-surgery. A panel of ten biomarkers were analyzed (Neurofilament Light Polypeptide (NFL), Tau, Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), Soluble Amyloid Precursos Protein (APP) α and β, Amyloid β 38, 40 and 42 (Aβ38, 40 and 42), Chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3LI or YKL-40), Heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP).). RESULTS: Nine patients (mean age 69, 7 males) were included. Median total aortic coverage was 68% [33, 98]. One patient died during the 30-day post-operative period. After an initial stable phase for the first few postoperative hours, most biomarkers showed an upward trend compared with baseline in all patients with >50% increase in value for NFL in 5/9 patients, in 7/9 patients for Tau and in 5/9 patients for GFAP. One patient developed spinal cord and supratentorial brain ischemia, confirmed with MRI. In this case, NF-L, GFAP and tau were markedly elevated compared with non-SCI patients (maximum increase compared with baseline in the SCI patient versus mean value of the maximal increase for all other patients: NF-L 367% vs 79%%, GFAP 95608% versus 3433%, tau 1020% vs 192%). CONCLUSION: . This study suggests an increase in all ten studied CSF biomarkers after coverage of spinal arteries during endovascular aortic repair. However, the pilot study was not able to establish a specific correlation between spinal fluid biomarker elevation and clinical symptoms of SCI due to small sample size and event rate
Angiofibrome Nasopharyngien Compliqué D\'un Syndrome De Foster Kennedy : Place De La Chimiothérapie
L\'angiofibrome nasopharyngien (FNP) est une tumeur vasculaire bénigne localement agressive. Il représente 0,05% des tumeurs de la tête et du cou et touche presque exclusivement les adolescents de sexe masculin. La chirurgie est considérée
comme le traitement principal du FNP, les autres modalités thérapeutiques tels que radiothérapie et chimiothérapie sont indiquées en cas d\'extension intracrânienne avec envahissement du sinus caverneux ou de la carotide interne. Nous rapportons une observation rare de FNP, compliqué d\'un syndrome de Foster Kennedy chez une femme de 34 ans. Le traitement a consisté en une chimiothérapie (adriamycine, décarbazine) suivie d\'une radiothérapie. Nous discutons de l\'intérêt et des résultats de la chimiothérapie dans le traitement des FNP avec une importante extension intracrânienne (stade III B de la classification de Radkowski).Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a locally aggressive, although histologically benign, vascular neoplasm. This neoplasm accounts for 0.05% of the head and neck tumours and affects almost exclusively male adolescents. Surgery is considered as the primary treatment of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Other treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy are still recommended for intracranial extension involving the cavernous sinus or the internal carotid artery. We report a rare case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, further complicated with a Foster Kennedy syndrome in a 34- years-old woman. The treatment consisted in a chemotherapy (adriamycine, decarbazine) followed by radiotherapy. We discuss the relevance and the outcome of chemotherapy in the treatment of the nasopharyngeal angiofibromas with a consistent intracranial extension (stage III B of Radkowski\'s classification). Analysis of ringing effects due to magnetic core materials in pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance circuits
This work presents investigations and detailed analysis of ringing in a non-resonant pulsednuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) circuit. Ringing is a commonly observed phenomenon in high power switching circuits. The oscillations described as ringing impede measurements in pulsed NMR systems. It is therefore desirable that those oscillations decay fast. It is often assumed that one of the causes behind ringing is the role of the magnetic core used in theantenna (acting as an inductive load). We will demonstrate that an LRC subcircuit is also set-up due to the inductive load and needs to be considered due to its parasitic effects. It is observed that the parasitics associated with the inductive load become important at certain frequencies. The output response can be related to the response of an under-damped circuit and to the magnetic core material. This research work demonstrates and discusses ways of controlling ringing by considering interrelationships between different contributing factors
