Instability of isolated triplet excitations on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL)

Configurations of singlets and triplets on the SSL have been proposed in the literature as variational ground states of the Shastry-Sutherland model at fixed magnetization M. We prove, that isolated triplet excitations on the SSL are unstable if the coupling alpha falls below a critical value alpha_c=2.0 (approx.). The instability should be visible in the compound SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 where a coupling alpha^*=1.48 is realized.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTe

Fermi Arc of Metallic Diagonal Stripes in High Tc Cuprates

Spectral weight is investigated for metallic diagonal stripe state in two dimensional Hubbard model, and Fermi arc observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on LSCO is discussed. The Fermi arc coming from the mid-gap state of diagonal stripe appears near (π2,π2)(\frac{\pi}{2},\frac{\pi}{2}) and equivalent position in the reciprocal space, and the gap opens below the mid-gap state. We show how these spectral weight structure depends on the phasing of stripes, i.e., site-centered or bond-centered stripes.Comment: 4 figure

Molecular evolution of the proopiomelanocortin system in Barn owl species.

Examination of genetic polymorphisms in outbred wild-living species provides insights into the evolution of complex systems. In higher vertebrates, the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) precursor gives rise to α-, β-, and γ-melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH), which are involved in numerous physiological aspects. Genetic defects in POMC are linked to metabolic disorders in humans and animals. In the present study, we undertook an evolutionary genetic approach complemented with biochemistry to investigate the functional consequences of genetic polymorphisms in the POMC system of free-living outbred barn owl species (family Tytonidae) at the molecular level. Our phylogenetic studies revealed a striking correlation between a loss-of-function H9P mutation in the β-MSH receptor-binding motif and an extension of a poly-serine stretch in γ3-MSH to ≥7 residues that arose in the barn owl group 6-8 MYA ago. We found that extension of the poly-serine stretches in the γ-MSH locus affects POMC precursor processing, increasing γ3-MSH production at the expense of γ2-MSH and resulting in an overall reduction of γ-MSH signaling, which may be part of a negative feedback mechanism. Extension of the γ3-MSH poly-serine stretches ≥7 further markedly increases peptide hormone stability in plasma, which is conserved in humans, and is likely relevant to its endocrine function. In sum, our phylogenetic analysis of POMC in wild living owls uncovered a H9P β-MSH mutation subsequent to serine extension in γ3-MSH to 7 residues, which was then followed by further serine extension. The linked MSH mutations highlight the genetic plasticity enabled by the modular design of the POMC gene

Thermodynamical Properties of a Spin 1/2 Heisenberg Chain Coupled to Phonons

We performed a finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interaction coupled to Einstein phonons. Our method allows to treat easily up to 100 phonons per site and the results presented are practically free from truncation errors. We studied in detail the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat, the phonon occupation, the dimerization, and the spin-correlation function for various spin-phonon couplings and phonon frequencies. In particular we give evidence for the transition from a gapless to a massive phase by studying the finite-size behavior of the susceptibility. We also show that the dimerization is proportional to g2/Ωg^2/\Omega for T<2JT<2J.Comment: 10 pages, 17 Postscript Figure

Avoided Critical Behavior in O(n) Systems

Long-range frustrating interactions, even if their strength is infinitesimal, can give rise to a dramatic proliferations of ground or near-ground states. As a consequence, the ordering temperature can exhibit a discontinuous drop as a function of the frustration. A simple model of the doped Mott insulator, where the short-range tendency of the holes to phase separate competes with long-range Coulomb effects, exhibits this "avoided critical" behavior. This model may serve as a paradigm for many other systems.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Reexamination of the microscopic couplings of the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet CuGeO_3

Experimental data for the magnetic susceptibility and magnetostriction of CuGeO_3 are analyzed within a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic model with nearest ({J_1}) and next-nearest neighbour interactions ({J_2}). We show that the ratio of the exchange constants in the antiferromagnetic chains of CuGeO_3 amounts to J2/J1{J_2}/{J_1} = 0.354(0.01), i.e. it is significantly larger than the critical value for the formation of a spontaneous gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum without lattice dimerization. The susceptibility data are reproduced by our numerical results over the temperature range from 20K to 950K to a high degree of accuracy for J1=80.2(3.0){J_1} = 80.2 (3.0) and J2=28.4(1.8){J_2} = 28.4 (1.8). The pressure dependence of the exchange constants is estimated from magnetostriction data. Furthermore, the specific heat data are checked on consistency against the calculated entropy of the above model.Comment: 9 pages, REVTEX, 5 figure

Real space renormalization group approach to the 2d antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

The low energy behaviour of the 2d antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is studied in the sector with total spins S=0,1,2S=0,1,2 by means of a renormalization group procedure, which generates a recursion formula for the interaction matrix ΔS(n+1)\Delta_S^{(n+1)} of 4 neighbouring "nn clusters" of size 2n×2n2^n\times 2^n, n=1,2,3,...n=1,2,3,... from the corresponding quantities ΔS(n)\Delta_S^{(n)}. Conservation of total spin SS is implemented explicitly and plays an important role. It is shown, how the ground state energies ES(n+1)E_S^{(n+1)}, S=0,1,2S=0,1,2 approach each other for increasing nn, i.e. system size. The most relevant couplings in the interaction matrices are generated by the transitions between the ground states S,m;n+1>|S,m;n+1> (m=S,...,Sm=-S,...,S) on an (n+1)(n+1)-cluster of size 2n+1×2n+12^{n+1}\times 2^{n+1}, mediated by the staggered spin operator SqS_q^*Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, RevTe

Enhanced ozone strongly reduces carbon sink strength of adult beech (Fagus sylvatica) – Resume from the free-air fumigation study at Kranzberg Forest

Ground-level ozone (O3) has gained awareness as an agent of climate change. In this respect, key results are comprehended from a unique 8-year free-air O3-fumigation experiment, conducted on adult beech (Fagus sylvatica) at Kranzberg Forest (Germany). A novel canopy O3 exposure methodology was employed that allowed whole-tree assessment in situ under twice-ambient O3 levels. Elevated O3 significantly weakened the C sink strength of the tree–soil system as evidenced by lowered photosynthesis and 44% reduction in whole-stem growth, but increased soil respiration. Associated effects in leaves and roots at the gene, cell and organ level varied from year to year, with drought being a crucial determinant of O3 responsiveness. Regarding adult individuals of a late-successional tree species, empirical proof is provided first time in relation to recent modelling predictions that enhanced ground-level O3 can substantially mitigate the C sequestration of forests in view of climate change

One-Dimensional Electron Liquid in an Antiferromagnetic Environment: Spin Gap from Magnetic Correlations

We study a one-dimensional electron liquid coupled by a weak spin-exchange interaction to an antiferromagnetic spin-S ladder with n legs. A perturbative renormalization group analysis in the semiclassical limit reveals the opening of a spin gap, driven by the local magnetic correlations on the ladder. The effect, which we argue is present for any gapful ladder or gapless ladder with nS1nS\gg 1, is enhanced by the repulsive interaction among the conduction electrons but is insensitive to the sign of the spin exchange interaction with the ladder. Possible implications for the striped phases of the cuprates are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
