A critical analysis of interpretive research studies in cooperative education and internships

    Get PDF
Much research in co-op has utilized a quantitative or experimental approach within a positivist paradigm. Here we present a critical analysis of interpretive/qualitative studies in terms of output, diversity, quality, along with an overview of the topics investigated. Our analysis suggests that interpretive work is a substantial part of co-op research output, and that is spans a wide range of programs, disciplines and geographical locations. Similar themes to those investigated by a quantitative approach are investigated by interpretive researchers, but there is emphasis in interpretive work on understanding more details of co-op issues in relation to the educational context

    "Buddha's Light" of Cumulative Particles

We show analytically that in the cumulative particles production off nuclei multiple interactions lead to a glory-like backward focusing effect. Employing the small phase space method we arrived at a characteristic angular dependence of the production cross section dσ∼1/π−θd\sigma \sim 1/ \sqrt {\pi - \theta} near the strictly backward direction. This effect takes place for any number n≥3n\geq 3 of interactions of rescattered particle, either elastic or inelastic (with resonance excitations in intermediate states), when the final particle is produced near corresponding kinematical boundary. Such a behaviour of the cross section near the backward direction is in qualitative agreement with some of available data. Explanation of this effect and the angular dependence of the cross section near θ∼π\theta \sim \pi are presented for the first time.Comment: The proof of the azimuthal focusing for arbitrary polar angles of the momenta of rescattered light particle is given (section 4). Amendments made in the text and figures. Presented at the International seminar Quarks-2014, Suzdal', Russia, 2-8 June 2014. 26 pages, 7 figures. Performance Evaluation and Comparison of CORBA Implementations for the Java Platform

Middleware is a software layer between the applications, services and the operating system that provides an abstraction to the application programmer. It masks the heterogeneous nature of the network and provides such services as remote calls, naming service, transaction process abilities, and security services. Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is a middleware design that is implemented through the use of Object Request Broker (ORB), which is a software component that, allows communication between the remote objects and applications that use them in a distributed environment. CORBA applications can run on almost any platform, operating system, and support different languages. There are many types of distributed object middleware on the market such as Sun\u27s Java 2 ORB, Inprises\u27s VisiBroker for Java, IONA\u27s ORBacus for Java, and IONA\u27s Orbix 2000 for Java. Because of these various products, it is difficult to select the product that will provide the specific requirements for one\u27s application. The goal of this project is to evaluate the above-mentioned implementations of the CORBA standards and, additionally, CORBA was compared to LAMIMPI for efficiency. The results of this project should provide developers and novices studying distributed systems the necessary data to evaluate and select the most efficient CORBA product to meet their specific design requirements, and provide a methodology for further evaluation

Read my teeth: the history of dentistry in Moscow Theological Academy (Russia)

In 2014, the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted a comprehensive archaeological survey of the extraordinary necropolis of the Moscow Theological Academy. Before the First World War in this cemetery were buried teachers, professors and eminent students of this prestigious educational institution. Multiple pathological conditions, as well as special cases of the treatment have been observed in the assessment of the state of dentition. A clear sign of a medical intervention has a rather rare phenomenon for archaeological artifacts. As a therapeutic method of treatment of caries dentists have used a variety of filling materials. There were cases of use of dental phosphate cement and amalgam. On the materials presented as the newest (at the time) technique of treatment is amputation of the pulp with the imposition of antiseptic dressings, and the cases of prosthetics. Various dentoalveolar anomalies, methods and techniques of dental treatment and prosthetics that have been discovered, lead us into the area of the history of medicine. Thus paleodontology source is seen as a chronological marker. Objects dated to the late 19th century (up to 1892) have no trace of the intervention of a dentist. So the burials of individuals with traces of treatment (fillings, dentures, etc.) probably date to the early 20th century. Among them are the operations that can be applied only after the 20-ies of the 20th century
