Gap Anisotropy and de Haas-van Alphen Effect in Type-II Superconductors
We present a theoretical study on the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation
in the vortex state of type-II superconductors, with a special focus on the
connection between the gap anisotropy and the oscillation damping. Numerical
calculations for three different gap structures clearly indicate that the
average gap along extremal orbits is relevant for the magnitude of the extra
damping, thereby providing a support for experimental efforts to probe gap
anisotropy through the dHvA signal. We also derive an analytic formula for the

AKARI-CAS --- Online Service for AKARI All-Sky Catalogues
The AKARI All-Sky Catalogues are an important infrared astronomical database
for next-generation astronomy that take over the IRAS catalog. We have
developed an online service, AKARI Catalogue Archive Server (AKARI-CAS), for
astronomers. The service includes useful and attractive search tools and visual
tools.
One of the new features of AKARI-CAS is cached SIMBAD/NED entries, which can
match AKARI catalogs with other catalogs stored in SIMBAD or NED. To allow
advanced queries to the databases, direct input of SQL is also supported. In
those queries, fast dynamic cross-identification between registered catalogs is
a remarkable feature. In addition, multiwavelength quick-look images are
displayed in the visualization tools, which will increase the value of the
service.
In the construction of our service, we considered a wide variety of
astronomers' requirements. As a result of our discussion, we concluded that
supporting users' SQL submissions is the best solution for the requirements.
Therefore, we implemented an RDBMS layer so that it covered important
facilities including the whole processing of tables. We found that PostgreSQL
is the best open-source RDBMS products for such purpose, and we wrote codes for
both simple and advanced searches into the SQL stored functions. To implement
such stored functions for fast radial search and cross-identification with
minimum cost, we applied a simple technique that is not based on dividing
celestial sphere such as HTM or HEALPix. In contrast, the Web application layer
became compact, and was written in simple procedural PHP codes. In total, our

Superconducting gap and pair breaking in CeRu2 studied by point contacts
The superconducting gap in a CeRu single crystal is investigated by
point contacts. BCS-like behavior of the gap in the temperature range
below TT, where T is the critical temperature, is
established, indicating the presence of a gapless superconductivity region
(between T and T). The pair-breaking effect of paramagnetic
impurities, supposedly Ce ions, is taken into consideration using the
Scalski-Betbeder-Matibet-Weiss approach based on Abrikosov-Gorkov theory. It
allows us to recalculate the superconducting order parameter (in the presence of paramagnetic impurities) and the gap (in
the pure case) for the single crystal and for the previously studied
polycrystalline CeRu. The value 2(0)2 meV, with
2(0)kT3.75, is found in both cases,

Discovery of Four Gravitationally Lensed Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the discovery of four gravitationally lensed quasars selected from
the spectroscopic quasar catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We describe
imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations that support the lensing
interpretation of the following four quasars: SDSS J0832+0404 (image separation
\theta=1.98", source redshift z_s=1.115, lens redshift z_l=0.659); SDSS
J1216+3529 (\theta=1.49", z_s=2.012); SDSS J1322+1052 (\theta=2.00",
z_s=1.716); and SDSS J1524+4409 (\theta=1.67", z_s=1.210, z_l=0.320). Each
system has two lensed images. We find that the fainter image component of SDSS
J0832+0404 is significantly redder than the brighter component, perhaps because
of differential reddening by the lensing galaxy. The lens potential of SDSS
J1216+3529 might be complicated by the presence of a secondary galaxy near the

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search. III. Constraints on Dark Energy from the Third Data Release Quasar Lens Catalog
We present cosmological results from the statistics of lensed quasars in the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Lens Search. By taking proper account of
the selection function, we compute the expected number of quasars lensed by
early-type galaxies and their image separation distribution assuming a flat
universe, which is then compared with 7 lenses found in the SDSS Data Release 3
to derive constraints on dark energy under strictly controlled criteria. For a
cosmological constant model (w=-1) we obtain
\Omega_\Lambda=0.74^{+0.11}_{-0.15}(stat.)^{+0.13}_{-0.06}(syst.). Allowing w
to be a free parameter we find
\Omega_M=0.26^{+0.07}_{-0.06}(stat.)^{+0.03}_{-0.05}(syst.) and
w=-1.1\pm0.6(stat.)^{+0.3}_{-0.5}(syst.) when combined with the constraint from
the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations in the SDSS luminous red galaxy
sample. Our results are in good agreement with earlier lensing constraints
obtained using radio lenses, and provide additional confirmation of the
presence of dark energy consistent with a cosmological constant, derived

A New Survey for Giant Arcs
We report on the first results of an imaging survey to detect strong
gravitational lensing targeting the richest clusters selected from the
photometric data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with follow-up deep
imaging observations from the Wisconsin Indiana Yale NOAO (WIYN) 3.5m telescope
and the University of Hawaii 88-inch telescope (UH88). The clusters are
selected from an area of 8000 deg^2 using the Red Cluster Sequence technique
and span the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.6, corresponding to a comoving
cosmological volume of ~ 2 Gpc^3. Our imaging survey thus targets a volume more
than an order of magnitude larger than any previous search. A total of 240
clusters were imaged of which 141 had sub-arcsecond image quality. Our survey
has uncovered16 new lensing clusters with definite giant arcs, an additional 12
systems for which the lensing interpretation is very likely, and 9 possible
lenses which contain shorter arclets or candidate arcs which are less certain
and will require further observations to confirm their lensing origin. The
number of new cluster lenses detected in this survey is likely > 30. Among
these new systems are several of the most dramatic examples of strong
gravitational lensing ever discovered with multiple bright arcs at large
angular separation. These will likely become 'poster-child' gravitational
lenses similar to Abell 1689 and CL0024+1654. The new lenses discovered in this
survey will enable future sysetmatic studies of the statistics of strong
lensing and its implications for cosmology and our structure formation

Theory of de Haas-van Alphen Effect in Type-II Superconductors
Theory of quasiparticle spectra and the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation
in type-II superconductors are developed based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes
equations for vortex-lattice states. As the pair potential grows through the
superconducting transition, each degenerate Landau level in the normal state
splits into quasiparticle bands in the magnetic Brillouin zone. This brings
Landau-level broadening, which in turn leads to the extra dHvA oscillation
damping in the vortex state. We perform extensive numerical calculations for
three-dimensional systems with various gap structures. It is thereby shown that
(i) this Landau-level broadening is directly connected with the average gap at
H=0 along each Fermi-surface orbit perpendicular to the field H; (ii) the extra
dHvA oscillation attenuation is caused by the broadening around each extremal
orbit. These results imply that the dHvA experiment can be a unique probe to
detect band- and/or angle-dependent gap amplitudes. We derive an analytic
expression for the extra damping based on the second-order perturbation with
respect to the pair potential for the Luttinger-Ward thermodynamic potential.
This formula reproduces all our numerical results excellently, and is used to
estimate band-specific gap amplitudes from available data on NbSe_2, Nb_3Sn,
and YNi_2B_2C. The obtained value for YNi_2B_2C is fairly different from the
one through a specific-heat measurement, indicating presence of gap anisotropy

Effects of anisotropic interactions on the structure of animal groups
This paper proposes an agent-based model which reproduces different
structures of animal groups. The shape and structure of the group is the effect
of simple interaction rules among individuals: each animal deploys itself
depending on the position of a limited number of close group mates. The
proposed model is shown to produce clustered formations, as well as lines and
V-like formations. The key factors which trigger the onset of different
patterns are argued to be the relative strength of attraction and repulsion
