ATLAS Pixel Detector Timing Optimisation with the Back of Crate Card of the Optical Pixel Read out System
As with all detector systems at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the assignment of data to the correct bunch crossing, where bunch crossings will be separated in time by 25 ns, is one of the challenges for the ATLAS pixel detector. This document explains how the detector system will accomplish this by describing the general strategy, its implementation, the optimisation of the parameters, and the results obtained during a combined testbeam of all ATLAS subdetectors

System Tests of the ATLAS Pixel Detector
The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment at the
LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will be a pixel detector, which is presently under
construction. Once installed into the experimental area, access will be
extremely limited. To ensure that the integrated detector assembly operates as
expected, a fraction of the detector which includes the power supplies and
monitoring system, the optical readout, and the pixel modules themselves, has
been assembled and operated in a laboratory setting for what we refer to as

Sixteen years of bathymetry and waves at San Diego beaches.
Sustained, quantitative observations of nearshore waves and sand levels are essential for testing beach evolution models, but comprehensive datasets are relatively rare. We document beach profiles and concurrent waves monitored at three southern California beaches during 2001-2016. The beaches include offshore reefs, lagoon mouths, hard substrates, and cobble and sandy (medium-grained) sediments. The data span two energetic El Niño winters and four beach nourishments. Quarterly surveys of 165 total cross-shore transects (all sites) at 100âm alongshore spacing were made from the backbeach to 8âm depth. Monthly surveys of the subaerial beach were obtained at alongshore-oriented transects. The resulting dataset consists of (1) raw sand elevation data, (2) gridded elevations, (3) interpolated elevation maps with error estimates, (4) beach widths, subaerial and total sand volumes, (5) locations of hard substrate and beach nourishments, (6) water levels from a NOAA tide gauge (7) wave conditions from a buoy-driven regional wave model, and (8) time periods and reaches with alongshore uniform bathymetry, suitable for testing 1-dimensional beach profile change models
Fibrinogen, Fibrin, and Fibrin Degradation Products in COVID-19
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the highly pathogenic and highly transmissible human coronavirus that is the causative agent for the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 manifests predominantly as a respiratory illness with symptoms consistent with viral pneumonia, but other organ systems (e.g., kidney, heart, brain) can also be-come perturbed in COVID-19 patients. Accumulating data suggest that significant activation of the hemostatic system is a common pathological manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The clotting protein fibrinogen is one of the most abundant plasma proteins. Following activation of coagulation, the central coagulation protease thrombin converts fibrinogen to fibrin monomers, which self-assemble to form a matrix, the primary structural component of the blood clot. Severe COVID-19 is associated with a profound perturbation of circulating fibrinogen, intra-and extravascular fibrin deposition and persistence, and fibrin degradation. Current findings suggest high levels of fibrino-gen and the fibrin degradation product D-dimer are biomarkers of poor prognosis in COVID-19. Moreover, emerging studies with in vitro and animal models indicate fibrin(ogen) as an active play-er in COVID-19 pathogenesis. Here, we review the current literature regarding fibrin(ogen) and COVID-19, including possible pathogenic mechanisms and treatment strategies centered on clotting and fibrin(ogen) function
A pedagogic appraisal of the Priority Heuristic
We have explored how science and mathematics teachers made decisions when confronted with a dilemma in which a fictitious young woman, Deborah, may choose to have an operation that might address a painful spinal condition. We sought to explore the extent to which psychological heuristic models, in particular the Priority Heuristic, might successfully describe the decision-making process of these teachers and how an analysis of the role of personal and emotional factors in shaping the decision-making process might inform pedagogical design. A novel aspect of this study is that the setting in which the decision-making process is examined contrasts sharply with those used in psychological experiments. We found that to some extent, even in this contrasting setting, the Priority Heuristic could describe these teachers' decision-making. Further analysis of the transcripts yielded some insights into limitations on scope as well the richness and complexity in how personal factors were brought to bear. We see these limitations as design opportunities for educational intervention
Cultural basis of social âdeficitsâ in autism spectrum disorders
There is very little research that specifically looks at how autism spectrum disorders are perceived in various communities. This qualitative research was conducted with parents who had children on the autistic spectrum belonging to four different ethnic communities (White British, Somali, West African and South Asian- 63 in total) and living in the UK. The study found that the importance that the parents give to various social skills varied on the basis of their cultural background and the gender of the parent. This is an important aspect to consider while providing support and services to individuals on the autism spectrum and their family members if the services have to be appropriate for their needs. This consideration would also enable the individuals on the autism spectrum to develop appropriate social skills required within their cultural groups. This is a preliminary study and further research on the topic is required
Work restructuring and changing craft identity: the Tale of the Disaffected Weavers (or what happens when the rug is pulled from under your feet)
This article explores the changes in worker identity that can occur during manufacturing restructuring â specifically those linked to the declining status of craft work â through an in-depth case study of Weaveco, a UK carpet manufacturer. An analysis of changes in the labour process is followed by employee reactions centred on the demise of the traditional craft identity of male carpet weavers. The voices of the weavers dramatize the tensions involved in reconstructing their masculine identity, and we consider the implications this has for understanding gendered work relations
