    Extending the Electron Spin Coherence Time of Atomic Hydrogen by Dynamical Decoupling

    We study the electron spin decoherence of encapsulated atomic hydrogen in octasilsesquioxane cages induced by the 1H and 29Si nuclear spin bath. By applying the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) pulse sequence we significantly suppress the low-frequency noise due to nuclear spin flip-flops up to the point where a maximum T2 = 56 us is observed. Moreover, dynamical decoupling with the CPMG sequence reveals the existence of two sources of high-frequency noise: first, a fluctuating magnetic field with the proton Larmor frequency, equivalent to classical magnetic field noise imposed by the 1H nuclear spins of the cage organic substituents, and second, decoherence due to entanglement between the electron and the inner 29Si nuclear spin of the cage

    Dynamic load management and optimum sizing of stand-alone hybrid PV/Wind system.

    Simulation algorithms for the sizing of stand-alone hybrid PV/Wind systems are a powerful tool in evaluating the optimum configuration that would cover the energy demand with a predefined reliability level at the lowest cost. Several parameters such as the interval of the simulation (day, day-night, hourly) and the consumption profile may significantly affect the optimum configuration. This paper examines the effect of these parameters within an optimum sizing simulation algorithm developed. The effect of these parameters was particularly evident at low battery capacities, which involve optimum configurations resulting in minimum cost. Furthermore, shift-able loads in the hourly-based weekly profile assumed in this study were identified, and a dynamic load management functionality was developed. In this approach, loads that could be shifted through time were dynamically allocated during periods of excess energy production by the hybrid PV/Wind system. The results showed an increase in system reliability from 95% to 97% when load shifting was introduced. Finally, sizing the system for only the static (non-shift-able loads) proved to withstand the addition of the extra shift-able loads while retaining the 95% reliability level when the load management functionality was introduced. Thus, a smaller installation with lower cost is achieved

    The paper presents the Hellenic fulltext database on Librarianship and Information Science E-VIVA (Ellinike Vivliothikonomike Vase), developed by the Library of the University of Cyprus. The objectives of E-VIVA is to identify, gather, organize, digitize and promote the research, conducted in Greece and Cyprus in the scientific fields of Archival, Library and Infor-mation Sciences. Data are provided concerning the cov-erage, the content, the format and the environment of the database as well as the steps that have been fol-lowed for the development. The legal framework related with the copyright issues that are raised is also dis-cussed. Furthermore a comparison is attempted be-tween E-VIVA, eLIS, LISA and LISTA. Finally the next plans of the Library of the University of Cyprus for the project are presented

    POTENTIAL FOR BIOACCUMULATION AND BIOTRANSFORMATION OF BIFENTHRIN AND 4, 4’-DDT THROUGH SEDIMENT EXPOSURE TO CHIRONOMUS DILUTUS

    The ecological role of chironomids has been described as an abundant and ubiquitous prey item for not only aquatic species, but terrestrial and avian species as well. Global use of pesticides in urban and agricultural applications have introduced a potential threat not only to chironomid populations, but to the individuals that prey on chironomids. Chironomids direct contact with the sediment has resulted in both legacy and current-use pesticides being detected in the individuals throughout their life cycle. The capacity for contaminant uptake and biotransformation among each midge life stage and from larvae to adults, however, is poorly understood. The lipophilic compounds of focus for this thesis include bifenthrin, and p,p’-DDT, along with the biotransformation products, TFP acid, BP alcohol, BP acid, p,p’-DDE and p,p’- DDD. To observe bioaccumulation and biotransformation at each life stage (2nd,3rd,4th, pupae, and adult), month long exposures were run with a subset of individuals being removed at each life stage and processed to quantify total, parent, and biotransformation product concentrations. Exposures at low concentrations (below literature C. dilutus no observable adverse effects concentration) at 25°C produced mean C. dilutus total pesticide concentrations ranging from 36.31 to 896.1 μg/kg dw lipid for bifenthrin and from 41.64 to 877.7 μg/kg dw lipid for DDT through all life stages. The 3rd instar contained the highest parent bifenthrin concentration, though this concentration was not statistically different from the concentration in the pupae. The 3rd instar also contained the highest parent concentration of DDT, though concentrations were not statistically different from concentrations in 2nd to 3rd instar larvae. C. dilutus also displayed subsequent biotransformation of DDT to DDE in each instar. By the 4th instar, 87.10% of the total concentration in the midges was DDE and DDD. The biotransformation of DDT to DDD was also observed to occur in sediments and was likely due to direct reductive dechlorination through chemical processes. Chironomid uptake of DDD increased as the parent DDT was degraded to DDD in the sediments over the testing period. This study provides a greater understanding of the bioaccumulation and biotransformation potential in chironomids at each life stage. Initial spiking concentrations were too low, resulting in low body residues and with no method detection limit or reporting limit defined for the study, so these lower measures have limited certainty. Therefore, the implications of this thesis are limited

    Angiotensin II in the treatment of distributive shock: a systematic-review and meta-analysis.

    BACKGROUND While non-norepinephrine vasopressors are increasingly used as a rescue therapy in cases of norepinephrine-refractory shock, data on their efficacy are limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize existing literature on the efficacy of Angiotensin II (ATII) in distributive shock. METHODS We pre-registered our meta-analysis with PROSPERO (CRD42023456136). We searched PubMed, Scopus, and gray literature for studies presenting outcomes on ATII use in distributive shock. The primary outcome of the meta-analysis was all-cause mortality. We used a random effects model to calculate pooled risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS By incorporating data from 1555 patients included in 10 studies, we found that however all-cause mortality was similar among patients receiving ATII and controls (RR 1.02, 95% CI 0.89 to 1.16, p = 0.81), the reduction in norepinephrine or norepinephrine-equivalent dose at 3 h after treatment initiation was greater among patients receiving ATII (MD -0.06, 95% CI -0.11 to -0.02, p = 0.008), while there were no higher rates of adverse events reported among ATII patients. CONCLUSIONS While ATII did not reduce mortality among distributive shock patients, it allowed for significant adjunctive vasopressor reduction at 3 h without an increase in reported adverse events, deeming it a viable alternative for the increasingly adopted multimodal vasopressor for minimizing catecholamine exposure and its adverse events

    Structure and cardioprotective activities of polar lipids of olive pomace, olive pomace-enriched fish feed and olive pomace fed gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata)

    peer-reviewedTotal lipids of olive pomace (OP), olive pomace diet (OP diet), fish oil diet (FO diet) and fish fillets of farmed gilthead sea bream (fish fed with FO diet and OP diet respectively) were extracted and separated into polar (TPL) and neutral (TNL) lipids. All samples were assessed for their in vitro activity against washed rabbit platelets aggregation induced by Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) and they were further analyzed by electrospray-mass spectrometry. The high levels of palmitic (16:0), oleic (18:1 cis ω-9), linoleic (18:2 ω-6) and docosapentanoic acid (DPA 22:5 ω-3) contained in both OP and FO diets are reflected to the gilthead sea breams fed with the individual diet respectively, while the gilthead sea bream fed with FO diet displays a decrease in DPA. All samples contained various glycerophospholipids species. Two PE species were identified in OP, OP diet and fish fed with OP diet and not in FO diet, while that might be an indication that these substances are likely to be the key polar phospholipids that have the ability to be in vitro PAF inhibitors, i.e. inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in blood arteries.ACCEPTEDpeer-reviewe
