GRB afterglow light curves in the pre-Swift era - a statistical study
We present the results of a systematic analysis of the world sample of
optical/near-infrared afterglow light curves observed in the pre-Swift era by
the end of 2004. After selecting the best observed 16 afterglows with
well-sampled light curves that can be described by a Beuermann equation, we
explore the parameter space of the light curve parameters and physical
quantities related to them. In addition, we search for correlations between
these parameters and the corresponding gamma-ray data, and we use our data set

World-sheet scattering in AdS_5 x S^5 at two loops
We study the AdS_5 x S^5 sigma-model truncated to the near-flat-space limit
to two-loops in perturbation theory. In addition to extending previously known
one-loop results to the full SU(2|2)^2 S-matrix we calculate the two-loop
correction to the dispersion relation and then compute the complete two-loop
S-matrix. The result of the perturbative calculation can be compared with the
appropriate limit of the conjectured S-matrix for the full theory and complete

Molecular cloning, expression analysis and assignment of the porcine tumor necrosis factor superfamily member 10 gene (TNFSF10) to SSC13q34 -> q36 by fluorescence in situ hybridization and radiation hybrid mapping
We have cloned the complete coding region of the porcine TNFSF10 gene. The porcine TNFSF10 cDNA has an ORF of 870 nucleotides and shares 85 % identity with human TNFSF10, and 75% and 72% identity with rat and mouse Tnfsf10 coding sequences, respectively. The deduced porcine TNFSF10 protein consists of 289 amino acids with the calculated molecular mass of 33.5 kDa and a predicted pI of 8.15. The amino acid sequence similarities correspond to 86, 72 and 70% when compared with human, rat and mouse sequences, respectively. Nor-them blot analysis detected TNFSF10-specific transcripts (similar to 1.7 kb) in various organs of a 10-week-old pig, suggesting ubiquitous expression. Real-time RT-PCR studies of various organs from fetal (days 73 and 98) and postnatal stages (two weeks, eight months) demonstrated developmental and tissue-specific regulation of TNFSF10 mRNA abundance. The chromosomal location of the porcine TNFSF10 gene was determined by FISH of a specific BAC clone to metaphase chromosomes. This TNFSF10 BAC clone has been assigned to SSC13q34 -> q36. Additionally, the localization of the TNFSF10 gene was verified by RH mapping on the porcine IMpRH panel. Copyright (c) 2005S. KargerAG, Basel
Absolute-Magnitude Distributions and Light Curves of Stripped-Envelope Supernovae
The absolute visual magnitudes of three Type IIb, 11 Type Ib and 13 Type Ic
supernovae (collectively known as stripped-envelope supernovae) are studied by
collecting data on the apparent magnitude, distance, and interstellar
extinction of each event. Weighted and unweighted mean absolute magnitudes of
the combined sample as well as various subsets of the sample are reported. The
limited sample size and the considerable uncertainties, especially those
associated with extinction in the host galaxies, prevent firm conclusions
regarding differences between the absolute magnitudes of supernovae of Type Ib
and Ic, and regarding the existence of separate groups of overluminous and
normal-luminosity stripped-envelope supernovae. The spectroscopic
characteristics of the events of the sample are considered. Three of the four
overluminous events are known to have had unusual spectra. Most but not all of
the normal luminosity events had typical spectra. Light curves of
stripped-envelope supernovae are collected and compared. Because SN 1994I in
M51 was very well observed it often is regarded as the prototypical Type Ic
supernova, but it has the fastest light curve in the sample. Light curves are
modeled by means of a simple analytical technique that, combined with a
constraint on E/M from spectroscopy, yields internally consistent values of

Proteome analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry
In the present study we show results of a large-scale proteome analysis of the recently sequenced plant Arabidopsis thaliana. On the basis of a previously published sequential protein extraction protocol, we prepared protein extracts from eight different A. thaliana tissues (primary leaf, leaf, stem, silique, seedling, seed, root, and inflorescence) and analysed these by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. A total of 6000 protein spots, from three of these tissues, namely primary leaf, silique and seedling, were excised and the contained proteins were analysed by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry peptide mass fingerprinting. This resulted in the identification of the proteins contained in 2943 spots, which were found to be products of 663 different genes. Another short-burst host galaxy with an optically obscured high star formation rate: The case of GRB 071227
We report on radio continuum observations of the host galaxy of the short
gamma-ray burst 071227 (z=0.381) with the Australia Telescope Compact Array
(ATCA). We detect the galaxy in the 5.5 GHz band with an integrated flux
density of Fnu = 43 +/- 11 microJy, corresponding to an unobscured
star-formation rate (SFR) of about 24 Msun/yr, forty times higher than what was
found from optical emission lines. Among the ~30 well-identified and studied
host galaxies of short bursts this is the third case where the host is found to
undergo an episode of intense star formation. This suggests that a fraction of
all short-burst progenitors hosted in star-forming galaxies could be physically
related to recent star formation activity, implying a relatively short merger

New light on gamma-ray burst host galaxies with Herschel
Until recently, dust emission has been detected in very few host galaxies of
gamma-ray bursts (GRBHs). With Herschel, we have now observed 17 GRBHs up to
redshift z~3 and detected seven of them at infrared (IR) wavelengths. This
relatively high detection rate (41%) may be due to the composition of our
sample which at a median redshift of 1.1 is dominated by the hosts of dark
GRBs. Although the numbers are small, statistics suggest that dark GRBs are
more likely to be detected in the IR than their optically-bright counterparts.
Combining our IR data with optical, near-infrared, and radio data from our own
datasets and from the literature, we have constructed spectral energy
distributions (SEDs) which span up to 6 orders of magnitude in wavelength. By
fitting the SEDs, we have obtained stellar masses, dust masses, star-formation
rate (SFR), and extinctions for our sample galaxies. We find that GRBHs are
galaxies that tend to have a high specfic SFR (sSFR), and like other
star-forming galaxies, their ratios of dust-to-stellar mass are well correlated
with sSFR. We incorporate our Herschel sample into a larger compilation of
GRBHs, and compare this combined sample to SFR-weighted median stellar masses
of the widest, deepest galaxy survey to date. This is done in order to
establish whether or not GRBs can be used as an unbiased tracer of cosmic
comoving SFR density (SFRD) in the universe. In contrast with previous results,
this comparison shows that GRBHs are medium-sized galaxies with relatively high
sSFRs; stellar masses and sSFRs of GRBHs as a function of redshift are similar
to what is expected for star-forming galaxy populations at similar redshifts.
We conclude that there is no strong evidence that GRBs are biased tracers of
SFRD; thus they should be able to reliably probe the SFRD to early epochs.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Revised to

Older adults place lower value on choice relative to young adults
Choice is highly valued in modern society, from the supermarket to the hospital; however, it remains unknown
whether older and younger adults place the same value on increased choice. The current investigation tested
whether 53 older ( M age = 75.44 years) versus 53 younger adults ( M age = 19.58 years) placed lower value on increased
choice by examining the monetary amounts they were willing to pay for increased prescription drug coverage
options â important given the recently implemented Medicare prescription drug program. Results indicate
that older adults placed lower value on increasing choice sets relative to younger adults, who placed progressively
higher value on increasingly larger choice sets. These results are discussed regarding their implications for theory
and policy
