    Geometry of mixed states and degeneracy structure of geometric phases for multi-level quantum systems. A unitary group approach

    We analyze the geometric aspects of unitary evolution of general states for a multilevel quantum system by exploiting the structure of coadjoint orbits in the unitary group Lie algebra. Using the same method in the case of SU(3) we study the effect of degeneracies on geometric phases for three-level systems. This is shown to lead to a highly nontrivial generalization of the result for two-level systems in which degeneracy results in a "monopole" structure in parameter space. The rich structures that arise are related to the geometry of adjoint orbits in SU(3). The limiting case of a two-level degeneracy in a three-level system is shown to lead to the known monopole structure.Comment: Latex, 27 p

    Results of Universal Prenatal Screening for Hepatitis C Infection in a Remote American Indian Primary Care Population

    BACKGROUND: Although chronic liver disease remains a major area of health disparity for American Indian (AI) people, the epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among AI people is poorly documented. Because of suspected high local prevalence, two remote AI clinics in the Northern Plains implemented universal prenatal HCV screening in 2005. When this screening program reported an unexpectedly high prenatal anti-HCV (anti-HCV antibody) positivity rate, we conducted a case-control study to determine risks for infection and opportunities for community intervention. MAIN FINDINGS: The clinics screened a total of 205 pregnant women (median age, 22 years). Of these 205 women, a total of 13 (6.3%; 95% confidence interval, 3.4–10.6) had anti-HCV confirmed. Of the anti-HCV-positive women, 10 (76.9%) were aged 15–24 years. We included 10 cases and 40 anti-HCV-negative prenatal controls in a case-control study. On multivariate analysis, only injection-drug use (IDU) remained associated with HCV seropositivity. CONCLUSIONS: Universal prenatal screening revealed a high prevalence of anti-HCV at these remote AI clinics. This population has not been previously described at being at elevated risk for HCV infection. In order to reduce health disparities, young, rural AI populations seeking prenatal care need to be included in interventions to reduce HCV transmission

    Multicolour Optical Imaging of IR-Warm Seyfert Galaxies. V. Morphologies and Interactions. Challenging the Orientation Model

    This paper is the last in a series, investigating the optical properties of a sample of mid-IR Warm Seyfert galaxies and of a control sample of mid-IR cold galaxies. In the present paper we parametrize the morphologies and interaction properties of the host galaxies and combine these with the major conclusions in our previous papers. Our results confirm that nuclear activity is linked to galactic interactions. We suggest an alternative view for the simple orientation-obscuration model postulated for Seyfert types 1 and 2, that takes into account the time evolution of their environmental and morphological properties.     The Frequency of Active and Quiescent Galaxies with Companions: Implications for the Feeding of the Nucleus

    We analyze the idea that nuclear activity, either AGN or star formation, can be triggered by interactions, studying the percentage of active, HII and quiescent galaxies with companions. Our sample was selected from the Palomar survey, and avoids selection biases faced by previous studies. The comparison between the local galaxy density distributions showed that in most cases there is no statistically significant difference among galaxies of different activity types. The comparison of the percentage of galaxies with nearby companions showed that there is a higher percentage of LINERs, transition, and absorption line galaxies with companions than Seyferts and HII galaxies. However, we find that when we consider only galaxies of similar morphological types (ellipticals or spirals), there is no difference in the percentage of galaxies with companions among different activity types, indicating that the former result was due to the morphology-density effect. Also, only small differences are found when we consider galaxies with similar Halpha luminosities. The comparison between HII galaxies of different Halpha luminosities shows that there is a significantly higher percentage of galaxies with companions among the higher luminosity HII galaxies, indicating that interactions increase the amount of circumnuclear star formation, in agreement with previous results. The fact that we find that galaxies of different activity types have the same percentage of companions, suggests that interactions between galaxies is not a necessary condition to trigger the nuclear activity in AGNs.     IMPACT SHOULDER ANGLES CORRELATE WITH IMPACT WRIST ANGLES IN STANDING BACK HANDSPRINGS IN PREADOLESCENT AND ADOLESCENT FEMALE GYMNASTS.

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In gymnastics, the wrist is exposed to many different stresses including increased extension, especially during back handsprings. Currently a wrist extension angle during impact that places the wrist in danger has not been established. The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine the mean impact wrist angle during a standing back handspring in female preadolescent and adolescent gymnasts and (2) determine which factors predict impact wrist angles. METHODS: Fifty female gymnasts from six facilities, ages 8-15 were included in this study. Each gymnast completed a questionnaire about gymnastics participation and history of wrist pain. Active range of motion of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, and ankle was measured. Each gymnast was asked to perform a standard back handspring, which was videotaped. The wrist and shoulder flexion angles, at maximum impact, were recorded and measured using motion analysis software. Two-sample t-test was used to assess the relationship between impact wrist angle and wrist pain. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the association between related variables and impact wrist angle. RESULTS: The mean back handspring impact wrist angle was 95°. Fifteen subjects (30%) reported wrist pain. Years of participation (p=0.02) and impact shoulder angle (p=0.04) were predictive of impact wrist angles. CONCLUSION: Shoulder angles and years of participation correlate with impact wrist angles during the performance of a standing back handspring. Future studies are necessary to determine if addressing these factors can affect the impact wrist angles. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3

    Finite-level systems, Hermitian operators, isometries, and a novel parameterization of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds

    In this paper we obtain a description of the Hermitian operators acting on the Hilbert space \C^n, description which gives a complete solution to the over parameterization problem. More precisely we provide an explicit parameterization of arbitrary nn-dimensional operators, operators that may be considered either as Hamiltonians, or density matrices for finite-level quantum systems. It is shown that the spectral multiplicities are encoded in a flag unitary matrix obtained as an ordered product of special unitary matrices, each one generated by a complex nkn-k-dimensional unit vector, k=0,1,...,n2k=0,1,...,n-2. As a byproduct, an alternative and simple parameterization of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds is obtained.Comment: 21 page

    A Parametrization of Bipartite Systems Based on SU(4) Euler Angles

    In this paper we give an explicit parametrization for all two qubit density matrices. This is important for calculations involving entanglement and many other types of quantum information processing. To accomplish this we present a generalized Euler angle parametrization for SU(4) and all possible two qubit density matrices. The important group-theoretical properties of such a description are then manifest. We thus obtain the correct Haar (Hurwitz) measure and volume element for SU(4) which follows from this parametrization. In addition, we study the role of this parametrization in the Peres-Horodecki criteria for separability and its corresponding usefulness in calculating entangled two qubit states as represented through the parametrization.Comment: 23 pages, no figures; changed title and abstract and rewrote certain areas in line with referee comments.     Quasi-doubly periodic solutions to a generalized Lame equation

    We consider the algebraic form of a generalized Lame equation with five free parameters. By introducing a generalization of Jacobi's elliptic functions we transform this equation to a 1-dim time-independent Schroedinger equation with (quasi-doubly) periodic potential. We show that only for a finite set of integral values for the five parameters quasi-doubly periodic eigenfunctions expressible in terms of generalized Jacobi functions exist.     The Influence of Bars on Nuclear Activity

    We test ideas on fueling of galactic nuclei by bar-driven inflow by comparing the detection rate and intensity of nuclear H II regions and AGNs among barred and unbarred galaxies in a sample of over 300 spirals selected from our recent optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. Among late-type spirals (Sc-Sm), but not early-type (S0/a-Sbc), we observe in the barred group a very marginal increase in the detection rate of H II nuclei and a corresponding decrease in the incidence of AGNs. The minor differences in the detection rates, however, are statistically insignificant, most likely stemming from selection effects and not from a genuine influence from the bar. The presence of a bar seems to have no noticeable impact on the likelihood of a galaxy to host either nuclear star formation or an AGN. The nuclei of early-type barred spirals do exhibit measurably higher star-formation rates than their unbarred counterparts, as indicated by either the luminosity or the equivalent width of H-alpha emission. By contrast, late-type spirals do not show such an effect. Bars have a negligible effect on the strength of the AGNs in our sample, regardless of the Hubble type of the host galaxy.     Studies in Dye-Tracing Technologies in Karst Hydrogeology

    Information on fluorescent dyes used for water tracing and the results of six studies are reported. Optical brightener, direct yellow, fluorescein, rhodamine (WT), and other dyes are described and the procedures employed in their use ·in the field and in equilibration experiments are discussed. Three of the six studies consisted of investigations of the equilibration with passive detectors of three of the dyes. The absorption of optical brightener on fabric detectors was apparently linear with concentration and with immersion time, while detectors became rapidly saturated with direct yellow. Equilibrium of fluorescein on charcoal detectors with an elutriating solution was not achieved. Several data processing tasks were performed, including the creation of a computer file for field data and the writing-of programs to sort the field data and generate plotted maps, and to display the total fluorescence of samples. A fifth study was based. on a series of dye traces into Royal Spring and Russell Cave Spring in the Inner Bluegrass Karst Region. Samples were collected with an automatic water sampler and the resulting flow velocity determinations combined with discharge data provided values at a number of aquifer parameters. The most interesting result was the very small value for depth of flow. A final study was of fracture traces identified on topographic maps and aerial photographs in the Inner Bluegrass Karst Region. It was found that while more such features were visible on the photographs, some were only apparent on maps
