A lattice in more than two Kac--Moody groups is arithmetic
Let be an irreducible lattice in a product of n infinite irreducible
complete Kac-Moody groups of simply laced type over finite fields. We show that
if n is at least 3, then each Kac-Moody groups is in fact a simple algebraic
group over a local field and is an arithmetic lattice. This relies on
the following alternative which is satisfied by any irreducible lattice
provided n is at least 2: either is an S-arithmetic (hence linear)
group, or it is not residually finite. In that case, it is even virtually
simple when the ground field is large enough.

Improving the molecular diagnosis of Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia abortus infection with a species-specific duplex real-time PCR.
Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia abortus are closely related intracellular bacteria exhibiting different tissue tropism that may cause severe but distinct infection in humans. C. psittaci causes psittacosis, a respiratory zoonotic infection transmitted by birds. C. abortus is an abortigenic agent in small ruminants, which can also colonize the human placenta and lead to foetal death and miscarriage. Infections caused by C. psittaci and C. abortus are underestimated mainly due to diagnosis difficulties resulting from their strict intracellular growth. We developed a duplex real-time PCR to detect and distinguish these two bacteria in clinical samples. The first PCR (PCR1) targeted a sequence of the 16S-23S rRNA operon allowing the detection of both C. psittaci and C. abortus. The second PCR (PCR2) targeted the coding DNA sequence CPSIT_0607 unique to C. psittaci. The two PCRs showed 100 % detection for ≥ 10 DNA copies per reaction (1000 copies ml- 1). Using a set of 120 samples, including bacterial reference strains, clinical specimens and infected cell culture material, we monitored 100 % sensitivity and 100 % specificity for the detection of C. psittaci and C. abortus for PCR1. When PCR1 was positive, PCR2 could discriminate C. psittaci from C. abortus with a positive predictive value of 100 % and a negative predictive value of 88 %. In conclusion, this new duplex PCR represents a low-cost and time-saving method with high-throughput potential, expected to improve the routine diagnosis of psittacosis and pregnancy complication in large-scale screening programs and also during outbreaks

Chlamydiosis in British Garden Birds (2005–2011): Retrospective Diagnosis and Chlamydia psittaci Genotype Determination
The significance of chlamydiosis as a cause of mortality in wild passerines (Order Passeriformes), and the role of these birds as a potential source of zoonotic Chlamydia psittaci infection, is unknown. We reviewed wild bird mortality incidents (2005–2011). Where species composition or post-mortem findings were indicative of chlamydiosis, we examined archived tissues for C. psittaci infection using PCR and ArrayTube Microarray assays. Twenty-one of 40 birds tested positive: 8 dunnocks (Prunella modularis), 7 great tits (Parus major), 3 blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), 2 collared doves (Streptopelia decaocto, Order Columbiformes), and 1 robin (Erithacus rubecula). Chlamydia psittaci genotype A was identified in all positive passerines and in a further three dunnocks and three robins diagnosed with chlamydiosis from a previous study. Two collared doves had genotype E. Ten of the 21 C. psittaci-positive birds identified in the current study had histological lesions consistent with chlamydiosis and co-localizing Chlamydia spp. antigens on immunohistochemistry. Our results indicate that chlamydiosis may be a more common disease of British passerines than was previously recognized. Wild passerines may be a source of C. psittaci zoonotic infection, and people should be advised to take appropriate hygiene precautions when handling bird feeders or wild birds
Neglected zoonotic agents in cattle abortion: tackling the difficult to grow bacteria.
Coxiella burnetii, Chlamydia abortus and Leptospira spp. are difficult to grow bacteria that play a role in bovine abortion, but their diagnosis is hampered by their obligate intracellular lifestyle (C. burnetii, C. abortus) or their lability (Leptospira spp.). Their importance is based on the contagious spread in food-producing animals, but also as zoonotic agents. In Switzerland, first-line routine bacteriological diagnostics in cattle abortions is regulated by national law and includes only basic screening by staining for C. burnetii due to the high costs associated with extended spectrum analysis. The aim of this study was to assess the true occurrence of these zoonotic pathogens in 249 cases of bovine abortion in Switzerland by serology (ELISA for anti-C. burnetii and C. abortus antibodies and microscopic agglutination test for anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies), molecular methods (real-time PCR and sequencing of PCR products of Chlamydiales-positive cases), Stamp's modification of the Ziehl-Neelsen (mod-ZN) stain and, upon availability of material, by histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC).
After seroanalysis the prevalence was 15.9% for C. burnetii, 38.5% for C. abortus and 21.4% for Leptospira spp. By real-time PCR 12.1% and 16.9% of the cases were positive for C. burnetii and Chlamydiales, respectively, but only 2.4% were positive for C. burnetii or Chlamydiales by mod-ZN stain. Sequencing of PCR products of Chlamydiales-positive cases revealed C. abortus in 10% of cases and the presence of a mix of Chlamydiales-related bacteria in 5.2% of cases. Pathogenic Leptospira spp. were detected in 5.6% of cases. Inflammatory lesions were present histologically in all available samples which were real-time PCR-positive for Chlamydiales and Leptospira spp. One of 12 real-time PCR-positive cases for C. burnetii was devoid of histological lesions. None of the pathogens could be detected by IHC.
Molecular detection by real-time PCR complemented by histopathological analysis is recommended to improve definitive diagnosis of bovine abortion cases and determine a more accurate prevalence of these zoonotic pathogens
Universal statistical properties of poker tournaments
We present a simple model of Texas hold'em poker tournaments which retains
the two main aspects of the game: i. the minimal bet grows exponentially with
time; ii. players have a finite probability to bet all their money. The
distribution of the fortunes of players not yet eliminated is found to be
independent of time during most of the tournament, and reproduces accurately
data obtained from Internet tournaments and world championship events. This
model also makes the connection between poker and the persistence problem
widely studied in physics, as well as some recent physical models of biological

Tits-Satake projections of homogeneous special geometries
We organize the homogeneous special geometries, describing as well the
couplings of D=6, 5, 4 and 3 supergravities with 8 supercharges, in a small
number of universality classes. This relates manifolds on which similar types
of dynamical solutions can exist. The mathematical ingredient is the
Tits-Satake projection of real simple Lie algebras, which we extend to all
solvable Lie algebras occurring in these homogeneous special geometries. Apart
from some exotic cases all the other, 'very special', homogeneous manifolds can
be grouped in seven universality classes. The organization of these classes,
which capture the essential features of their basic dynamics, commutes with the
r- and c-map. Different members are distinguished by different choices of the
paint group, a notion discovered in the context of cosmic billiard dynamics of
non maximally supersymmetric supergravities. We comment on the usefulness of
this organization in universality classes both in relation with cosmic billiard
dynamics and with configurations of branes and orbifolds defining special

Electrical manipulation of spin states in a single electrostatically gated transition-metal complex
We demonstrate an electrically controlled high-spin (S=5/2) to low-spin
(S=1/2) transition in a three-terminal device incorporating a single Mn2+ ion
coordinated by two terpyridine ligands. By adjusting the gate-voltage we reduce
the terpyridine moiety and thereby strengthen the ligand-field on the Mn-atom.
Adding a single electron thus stabilizes the low-spin configuration and the
corresponding sequential tunnelling current is suppressed by spin-blockade.
From low-temperature inelastic cotunneling spectroscopy, we infer the
magnetic excitation spectrum of the molecule and uncover also a strongly
gate-dependent singlet-triplet splitting on the low-spin side. The measured
bias-spectroscopy is shown to be consistent with an exact diagonalization of
the Mn-complex, and an interpretation of the data is given in terms of a
