    BPS-Saturated Bound States of Tilted P-Branes in Type II String Theory

    We found BPS-saturated solutions of M-theory and Type II string theory which correspond to (non-marginally) bound states of p-branes intersecting at angles different from pi/2. These solutions are obtained by starting with a BPS marginally bound (orthogonally) intersecting configurations of two p-branes (e.g, two four-branes of Type II string theory), performing a boost transformation at an angle with respect to the world-volume of the configuration, performing T-duality transformation along the boost-direction, S-duality transformation, and T- transformations along the direction perpendicular to the boost transformation. The resulting configuration is non-marginally bound BPS-saturated solution whose static metric possesses the off-diagonal term which cannot be removed by a coordinate transformation, and thus signifies an angle (different from pi/2) between the resulting intersecting p-branes. Additional new p-branes are bound to this configuration, in order to ensure the stability of such a static, tilted configuration.Comment: 11 pages, Latex with two postscript figures, minor corrections, version to appear in Phys.     Development and pilot-testing of a colorectal cancer screening decision aid for individuals with varying health literacy levels

    Objective: Making an informed decision about colorectal cancer screening requires health literacy. Our aim was to develop and pilot-test a computer-based decision aid to support informed decision making about whether or not to participate in colorectal cancer screening for individuals with varying health literacy levels in the Netherlands. Methods: First, we designed and adapted the decision aid prototype among 25 individuals with low (n = 10) and adequate (n = 15) health literacy. Second, we used a before/after study to assess changes in knowledge, attitude, intention, decisional conflict, deliberation, anxiety and risk perception in an online survey among 81 individuals eligible for colorectal cancer screening with low (n = 35) and adequate (n = 46) health literacy. Results: The decision aid was acceptable, comprehensible, reduced decisional conflict, increased deliberation and improved knowledge about colorectal cancer screening, but not about colorectal cancer, among individuals with adequate and low health literacy. Usability was slightly higher for participants with adequate health literacy compared to those with low health literacy. Conclusion: The decision aid is promising in supporting informed decision making about colorectal cancer screening, also among individuals with lower health literacy. Practice implications: Further refinement of interactive features, such as videos, animations and the values clarification exercise, is needed to increase the usability of the decision aid

    Time-dependent backgrounds from supergravity with gauged non-compact R-symmetry

    We obtain a general class of time-dependent, asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds which solve the first order bosonic equations that extremize the action for supergravity with gauged non-compact RR-symmetry. These backgrounds correspond only to neutral fields with the correct sign of kinetic energy. Within N=2 five-dimensional supergravity with vector-superfields we provide examples of multi-centered charged black holes in asymptotic de Sitter space, whose spatial part is given by a time-dependent hyper-K\"ahler space. Reducing these backgrounds to four dimensions yields asymptotically de Sitter multi-centered charged black hole backgrounds and we show that they are related to an instanton configuration by a massive T-duality over time. Within N=2 gauged supergravity in four (and five)-dimensions with hyper-multiplets there could also be neutral cosmological backgrounds that are regular and correspond to the different de Sitter spaces at early and late times.Comment: 28 pages, Latex; minor changes and add reference

    A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis to Evaluate a System Change in Mental Healthcare in the Netherlands for Patients with Depression or Anxiety

    Over the last decade, the Dutch mental healthcare system has been subject to profound policy reforms, in order to achieve affordable, accessible, and high quality care. One of the adjustments was to substitute part of the specialized care for general mental healthcare. Using a quasi-experimental design, we compared the cost-effectiveness of patients in the new setting with comparable patients from specialized mental healthcare in the old setting. Results showed that for this group of patients the average cost of treatment was significantly reduced by, on average, €2132 (p < 0.001), with similar health outcomes as in the old system

    Bent BPS domain walls of D=5 N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to hypermultiplets

    Within D=5 N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to hypermultiplets we derive consistency conditions for BPS domain walls with constant negative curvature on the wall. For such wall solutions to exist, the covariant derivative of the projector, governing the constraint on the Killing spinor, has to be non-zero and proportional to the cosmological constant on the domain walls. We also prove that in this case solutions of the Killing spinor equations are solutions of the equations of motion. We present explicit, analytically solved examples of such domain walls, employing the universal hypermultiplet fields. These examples involve the running of two scalar fields and the space-time in the transverse direction that is cut off at a critical distance, governed by the magnitude of the negative cosmological constant on the wall.Comment: 18 pages, Late

    Flat World of Dilatonic Domain Walls

    We study dilatonic domain walls specific to superstring theory. Along with the matter fields and metric the dilaton also changes its value in the wall background. We found supersymmetric (extreme) solutions which in general interpolate between isolated superstring vacua with non-equal value of the matter potential; they correspond to the static, planar domain walls with {\it flat} metric in the string (sigma model) frame. We point out similarities between the space-time of dilatonic walls and that of charged dilatonic black holes.     Low-grade inflammation as mediator between diet and behavioral disinhibition:A UK Biobank study

    BACKGROUND: Dietary patterns have been associated with variations in behavior. However, evidence has been limited and mixed, and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: Extend a previous study reporting significant associations between food patterns and behavioral disinhibition and explore whether low-grade inflammation is linked to behaviors and mediates the association between diet and behavioral disinhibition. DESIGN: Among participants of the UK Biobank (UKB) we extracted a single behavioral disinhibition principal component using the UKB touchscreen questionnaire, Mental Health Questionnaire (MHQ), and registered diagnoses. We identified four dietary patterns (prudent diet, elimination of wheat/dairy/eggs, meat-based diet, full-cream dairy consumption) by using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Immune biomarkers and an aggregated inflammation score (INFLA-score) were used to characterize low-grade inflammation. Associations between dietary patterns and immune biomarkers, between immune biomarkers and disinhibition were assessed, with adjustment for demographics, lifestyle factors, and somatic health conditions. Next, mediation analyses were run to examine whether the association between dietary patterns and disinhibition was partially explained by inflammatory levels. We also conducted subgroup analyses to explore whether associations and the mediation effect differed by sex, age, ethnicity/race, body-mass-index (BMI), and socioeconomic status (SES). RESULTS: The prudent diet was negatively, and the meat-based diet was positively associated with several pro-inflammatory biomarkers. Most immune biomarkers were positively associated with disinhibition (numbers of lymphocytes (βstandardized = 0.082, p < 0.001), monocytes (βstandardized = 0.043, p < 0.001), neutrophils (βstandardized = 0.071, p < 0.001), platelets (βstandardized = 0.022, p < 0.001), leukocytes (βstandardized = 0.093, p < 0.001), C-reactive protein (βstandardized = 0.051, p < 0.001), and for INFLA-score (βstandardized = 0.074, p < 0.001). In the mediation model, the INFLA-score mediated the association between prudent diet and meat-based diet and disinhibition score, with a significant indirect effect of low-grade inflammation for the prudent diet-disinhibition association (βstandardized = -0.007, p < 0.001) and for meat-disinhibition association (βstandardized = 0.001, p < 0.001)). Although all effects were small, covariates and interaction term adjustments did not attenuate the effects, and neither did most subgroup-only analyses. CONCLUSIONS: The prudent diet was associated with a lower disinhibition score and this effect was partially mediated by the lower inflammation. Reversely, the meat-based diet was linked to more inflammation, which was associated with more disinhibition. Our findings suggest mediating effects of immune function in the relationship between diet and behavioral disinhibition. However further alternative designs such as interventional trials are needed to establish causal effects
