Numerical Evidence for Divergent Burnett Coefficients
In previous papers [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 41}, 4501 (1990), Phys. Rev. E {\bf
18}, 3178 (1993)], simple equilibrium expressions were obtained for nonlinear
Burnett coefficients. A preliminary calculation of a 32 particle Lennard-Jones
fluid was presented in the previous paper. Now, sufficient resources have
become available to address the question of whether nonlinear Burnett
coefficients are finite for soft spheres. The hard sphere case is known to have
infinite nonlinear Burnett coefficients (ie a nonanalytic constitutive
relation) from mode coupling theory. This paper reports a molecular dynamics
caclulation of the third order nonlinear Burnett coefficient of a Lennard-Jones
fluid undergoing colour flow, which indicates that this term is diverges in the
thermodynamic limit.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure
High pressure X-ray preionized TEMA-CO2 laser
The construction of a high-pressure (up to 20 atm) transversely excited CO2 laser using transverse X-ray preionization is described. High pressure operation was found to be greatly improved in comparison to UV-preionized systems. Homogeneous discharges have been achieved in the pressure range 5–20 atm, yielding a specific laser output in the order of 35 J/l
Tunneling limit of heavy-fermion point contacts
We present results for a multichannel tunneling model that describes
point-contact spectra between a metallic tip and a superconducting
heavy-fermion system. We calculate tunneling spectra both in the normal and
superconducting state. In point-contact and scanning tunneling spectroscopy
many heavy-fermion materials, like CeCoIn5, exhibit an asymmetric differential
conductance, dI/dV, combined with a strongly suppressed Andreev reflection
signal in the superconducting state. For Andreev reflection to occur a junction
has to be in the highly transparent limit. Here we focus on the opposite limit,
namely that of low transparency leading to BCS-like dI/dV curves. We discuss
the consequences of a multichannel tunneling model for CeCoIn5 assuming
itinerant electron bands and localized f electrons.Comment: Contribution at SCES-201
Fully Electrified Neugebauer Spacetimes
Generalizing a method presented in an earlier paper, we express the complex
potentials E and Phi of all stationary axisymmetric electrovac spacetimes that
correspond to axis data of the form E(z,0) = (U-W)/(U+W) , Phi(z,0) = V/(U+W) ,
where U = z^{2} + U_{1} z + U_{2} , V = V_{1} z + V_{2} , W = W_{1} z + W_{2} ,
in terms of the complex parameters U_{1}, V_{1}, W_{1}, U_{2}, V_{2} and W_{2},
that are directly associated with the various multipole moments. (Revised to
clarify certain subtle points.)Comment: 25 pages, REVTE
Local demands on sterile neutrinos
In a model independent manner, we explore the local implications of a single
neutrino oscillation measurement which cannot be reconciled within a
three-neutrino theory. We examine this inconsistency for a single region of
baseline to neutrino energy . Assuming that sterile neutrinos account for
the anomaly, we find that the {\it local} demands of this datum can require the
addition to the theory of one to three sterile neutrinos. We examine the
constraints which can be used to determine when more than one neutrino would be
required. The results apply only to a given region of . The question of
the adequacy of the sterile neutrinos to satisfy a global analysis is not
addressed here. Finally, using the results of a 3+2 analysis, we indicate
values for unknown mixing matrix elements which would require two sterile
neutrinos due to local demands only.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, discussion adde
Determining parameters of the Neugebauer family of vacuum spacetimes in terms of data specified on the symmetry axis
We express the complex potential E and the metrical fields omega and gamma of
all stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes that result from the application
of two successive quadruple-Neugebauer (or two double-Harrison) transformations
to Minkowski space in terms of data specified on the symmetry axis, which are
in turn easily expressed in terms of multipole moments. Moreover, we suggest
how, in future papers, we shall apply our approach to do the same thing for
those vacuum solutions that arise from the application of more than two
successive transformations, and for those electrovac solutions that have axis
data similar to that of the vacuum solutions of the Neugebauer family.

A new form of the rotating C-metric
In a previous paper, we showed that the traditional form of the charged
C-metric can be transformed, by a change of coordinates, into one with an
explicitly factorizable structure function. This new form of the C-metric has
the advantage that its properties become much simpler to analyze. In this
paper, we propose an analogous new form for the rotating charged C-metric, with
structure function G(\xi)=(1-\xi^2)(1+r_{+}A\xi)(1+r_{-}A\xi), where r_\pm are
the usual locations of the horizons in the Kerr-Newman black hole. Unlike the
non-rotating case, this new form is not related to the traditional one by a
coordinate transformation. We show that the physical distinction between these
two forms of the rotating C-metric lies in the nature of the conical
singularities causing the black holes to accelerate apart: the new form is free
of torsion singularities and therefore does not contain any closed timelike
curves. We claim that this new form should be considered the natural
generalization of the C-metric with rotation.Comment: 13 pages, LaTe
Analysis of Density Matrix reconstruction in NMR Quantum Computing
Reconstruction of density matrices is important in NMR quantum computing. An
analysis is made for a 2-qubit system by using the error matrix method. It is
found that the state tomography method determines well the parameters that are
necessary for reconstructing the density matrix in NMR quantum computations.
Analysis is also made for a simplified state tomography procedure that uses
fewer read-outs. The result of this analysis with the error matrix method
demonstrates that a satisfactory accuracy in density matrix reconstruction can
be achieved even in a measurement with the number of read-outs being largely
reduced.Comment: 7 pages, title slightly changed and references adde
Long-Time Behavior of Velocity Autocorrelation Function for Interacting Particles in a Two-Dimensional Disordered System
The long-time behavior of the velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) is
investigated by the molecular dynamics simulation of a two-dimensional system
which has both a many-body interaction and a random potential. With
strengthening the random potential by increasing the density of impurities, a
crossover behavior of the VACF is observed from a positive tail, which is
proportional to t^{-1}, to a negative tail, proportional to -t^{-2}. The latter
tail exists even when the density of particles is the same order as the density
of impurities. The behavior of the VACF in a nonequilibrium steady state is
also studied. In the linear response regime the behavior is similar to that in
the equilibrium state, whereas it changes drastically in the nonlinear response
regime.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
