    Experiences with a simplified microsimulation for the Dallas/Fort Worth area

    We describe a simple framework for micro simulation of city traffic. A medium sized excerpt of Dallas was used to examine different levels of simulation fidelity of a cellular automaton method for the traffic flow simulation and a simple intersection model.     Two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries

    A two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries are investigated by computer simulations. The outflow of cars from the system and the average velocity are investigated. The time sequences of the outflow and average velocity have flicker noises in a jamming phase.     Equivalence of glass transition and colloidal glass transition in the hard-sphere limit

    We show that the slowing of the dynamics in simulations of several model glass-forming liquids is equivalent to the hard-sphere glass transition in the low-pressure limit. In this limit, we find universal behavior of the relaxation time by collapsing molecular-dynamics data for all systems studied onto a single curve as a function of T/pT/p, the ratio of the temperature to the pressure. At higher pressures, there are deviations from this universal behavior that depend on the inter-particle potential, implying that additional physical processes must enter into the dynamics of glass-formation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Discrete stochastic models for traffic flow

    We investigate a probabilistic cellular automaton model which has been introduced recently. This model describes single-lane traffic flow on a ring and generalizes the asymmetric exclusion process models. We study the equilibrium properties and calculate the so-called fundamental diagrams (flow vs.\ density) for parallel dynamics. This is done numerically by computer simulations of the model and by means of an improved mean-field approximation which takes into account short-range correlations. For cars with maximum velocity 1 the simplest non-trivial approximation gives the exact result.     Two-lane traffic rules for cellular automata: A systematic approach

    Microscopic modeling of multi-lane traffic is usually done by applying heuristic lane changing rules, and often with unsatisfying results. Recently, a cellular automaton model for two-lane traffic was able to overcome some of these problems and to produce a correct density inversion at densities somewhat below the maximum flow density. In this paper, we summarize different approaches to lane changing and their results, and propose a general scheme, according to which realistic lane changing rules can be developed. We test this scheme by applying it to several different lane changing rules, which, in spite of their differences, generate similar and realistic results. We thus conclude that, for producing realistic results, the logical structure of the lane changing rules, as proposed here, is at least as important as the microscopic details of the rules

    Direct current superconducting quantum interferometers with asymmetric shunt resistors

    We have investigated asymmetrically shunted Nb/Al-AlOx_x/Nb direct current (dc) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). While keeping the total resistance RR identical to a comparable symmetric SQUID with R−1=R1−1+R2−1R^{-1} = R_1^{-1} + R_2^{-1}, we shunted only one of the two Josephson junctions with R=R1,2/2R = R_{1,2}/2. Simulations predict that the optimum energy resolution Ï”\epsilon and thus also the noise performance of such an asymmetric SQUID can be 3--4 times better than that of its symmetric counterpart. Experiments at a temperature of 4.2\,K yielded ϔ≈32 ℏ\epsilon \approx 32\,\hbar for an asymmetric SQUID with an inductance of 22 pH22\,\rm{pH}. For a comparable symmetric device Ï”=110 ℏ\epsilon = 110\,\hbar was achieved, confirming our simulation results.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    A Cellular Automaton Model for Bi-Directionnal Traffic

    We investigate a cellular automaton (CA) model of traffic on a bi-directional two-lane road. Our model is an extension of the one-lane CA model of {Nagel and Schreckenberg 1992}, modified to account for interactions mediated by passing, and for a distribution of vehicle speeds. We chose values for the various parameters to approximate the behavior of real traffic. The density-flow diagram for the bi-directional model is compared to that of a one-lane model, showing the interaction of the two lanes. Results were also compared to experimental data, showing close agreement. This model helps bridge the gap between simplified cellular automata models and the complexity of real-world traffic.Comment: 4 pages 6 figures. Accepted Phys Rev
