Simulating emergent urban form: desakota in China
We propose that the emergent phenomenon know as ?desakota?, the rapidurbanization of densely populated rural populations in the newlydeveloped world, particularly China, can be simulated using agent-basedmodels which combine both local and global features. We argue thatdeskota represents a surprising and unusual form of urbanization wellmatchedto processes of land development that are driven from the bottomup but moderated by the higher-level macro economy. We develop asimple logic which links local household reform to global urban reform,translating these ideas into a model structure which reflects these twoscales. Our model first determines the rate of growth of different spatialaggregates using linear statistical analysis. It then allocates this growth tothe local level using developer agents who determine the transformation ormutation of rural households to urban pursuits based on local land costs,accessibilities, and growth management practices. The model is applied todesakota development in the Suzhou region between 1990 and 2000. Weshow how the global rates of change predicted at the township level in theWuxian City region surrounding Suzhou are tempered by localtransformations of rural to urban land uses which we predict using cellularautomata rules. The model, which is implemented in the RePast 3software, is validated using a blend of data taken from remote sensing andgovernment statistical sources. It represents an example of generativesocial science that fuses plausible behavior with formalized logics matchedagainst empirical evidence, essential in showing how novel patterns ofurbanization such as desakota emerge
The effect of temperature evolution on the interior structure of HO-rich planets
For most planets in the range of radii from 1 to 4 R, water is a
major component of the interior composition. At high pressure HO can be
solid, but for larger planets, like Neptune, the temperature can be too high
for this. Mass and age play a role in determining the transition between solid
and fluid (and mixed) water-rich super-Earth. We use the latest high-pressure
and ultra-high-pressure phase diagrams of HO, and by comparing them
with the interior adiabats of various planet models, the temperature evolution
of the planet interior is shown, especially for the state of HO. It
turns out that the bulk of HO in a planet's interior may exist in
various states such as plasma, superionic, ionic, Ice VII, Ice X, etc.,
depending on the size, age and cooling rate of the planet. Different regions of
the mass-radius phase space are also identified to correspond to different
planet structures. In general, super-Earth-size planets (isolated or without
significant parent star irradiation effects) older than about 3 Gyr would be

Extending twin support vector machine classifier for multi-category classification problems
© 2013 – IOS Press and the authors. All rights reservedTwin support vector machine classifier (TWSVM) was proposed by Jayadeva et al., which was used for binary classification
problems. TWSVM not only overcomes the difficulties in handling the problem of exemplar unbalance in binary classification problems, but also it is four times faster in training a classifier than classical support vector machines. This paper proposes one-versus-all twin support vector machine classifiers (OVA-TWSVM) for multi-category classification problems by utilizing the strengths of TWSVM. OVA-TWSVM extends TWSVM to solve k-category classification problems by developing k TWSVM where in the ith TWSVM, we only solve the Quadratic Programming Problems (QPPs) for the ith class, and get the ith nonparallel hyperplane corresponding to the ith class data. OVA-TWSVM uses the well known one-versus-all (OVA) approach to construct a corresponding twin support vector machine classifier. We analyze the efficiency of the OVA-TWSVM theoretically, and perform experiments to test its efficiency on both synthetic data sets and several benchmark data sets from the UCI machine learning repository. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that OVA-TWSVM can outperform the traditional OVA-SVMs classifier. Further experimental comparisons with other multiclass classifiers demonstrated that comparable performance could be achieved.This work is supported in part by the grant

Dimensional coupling induced current reversal in two-dimensional driven lattices
We show that the direction of directed particle transport in a two
dimensional ac-driven lattice can be dynamically reversed by changing the
structure of the lattice in the direction perpendicular to the applied driving
force. These structural changes introduce dimensional coupling effects, the
strength of which governs the timescale of the current reversals. The
underlying mechanism is based on the fact that dimensional coupling allows the
particles to explore regions of phase space which are inaccessible otherwise.
The experimental realization for cold atoms in ac-driven optical lattices is
discussed
The long-term optical behavior of MRK421
All data available in B band for the BL Lac object MRK421 from 22
publications are used to construct a historical light curve, dating back to
1900. It is found that the light curve is very complicated and consists of a
set of outbursts with very large duration. The brightness of MRK421 varies from
11.6 magnitude to more than 16 magnitude. Analyses with Jurkevich method of
computing period of cyclic phenomena reveal in the light curve two kinds of
behaviors. The first one is non-periodic with rapid, violent variations in
intensity on time scales of hours to days. The second one is periodic with a
possible period of years. Another possible period of years is not very significant. We have tested the robustness of the
Jurkevich method. The period of about one year found in the light curves of
MRK421 and of other objects is a spurious period due to the method and the
observing window. We try to explain the period of years under the
thermal instability of a slim accretion disk around a massive black hole of

Matrix Product Representation of Locality Preserving Unitaries
The matrix product representation provides a useful formalism to study not
only entangled states, but also entangled operators in one dimension. In this
paper, we focus on unitary transformations and show that matrix product
operators that are unitary provides a necessary and sufficient representation
of 1D unitaries that preserve locality. That is, we show that matrix product
operators that are unitary are guaranteed to preserve locality by mapping local
operators to local operators while at the same time all locality preserving
unitaries can be represented in a matrix product way. Moreover, we show that
the matrix product representation gives a straight-forward way to extract the
GNVW index defined in Ref.\cite{Gross2012} for classifying 1D locality
preserving unitaries. The key to our discussion is a set of `fixed point'
conditions which characterize the form of the matrix product unitary operators
after blocking sites. Finally, we show that if the unitary condition is relaxed
and only required for certain system sizes, the matrix product operator
formalism allows more possibilities than locality preserving unitaries. In
particular, we give an example of a simple matrix product operator which is
unitary only for odd system sizes, does not preserve locality and carries a
`fractional' index as compared to their locality preserving counterparts.Comment: 14 page
