Structural behaviour of copper chloride catalysts during the chlorination of CO to phosgene
The interaction of CO with an attapulgite-supported Cu(II)Cl2 catalyst has been examined in a micro-reactor arrangement. CO exposure to the dried, as-received catalyst at elevated temperatures leads to the formation of CO2 as the only identifiable product. However, phosgene production can be induced by a catalyst pre-treatment where the supported Cu(II)Cl2 sample is exposed to a diluted stream of chlorine. Subsequent CO exposure at ~ 370Ā°C then leads to phosgene production. In order to investigate the origins of this atypical set of reaction characteristics, a series of x-ray absorption experiments were performed that were supplemented by DFT calculations. XANES measurements establish that at the elevated temperatures connected with phosgene formation, the catalyst is comprised of Cu+ and a small amount of Cu2+. Moreover, the data show that unique to the chlorine pre-treated sample, CO exposure at elevated temperature results in a short-lived oxidation of the copper. On the basis of calculated CO adsorption energies, DFT calculations indicate that a mixed Cu+/Cu2+ catalyst is required to support CO chemisorption

BackgroundEquine neuroaxonal dystrophy/equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (eNAD/EDM) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting genetically predisposed foals maintained on an Ī±-tocopherol (Ī±-TOH) deficient diet. Currently no antemortem diagnostic test for eNAD/EDM is available.HypothesisBecause Ī±-TOH deficiency is associated with increased lipid peroxidation, it was hypothesized that F2 -isoprostanes (F2 IsoP), F4 -neuroprostanes (F4 NP) and oxysterols derived from free radical oxidation would be increased in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and neural tissue of eNAD/EDM affected horses and could serve as potential biomarkers for disease.AnimalsIsoprostane Study A: 14 Quarter horse foals (10 healthy foals and 4 eNAD/EDM affected foals) at 1 and 6 months of age. Isoprostane Study B: 17 eNAD/EDM affected and 10 unaffected horsesāā„ā1-4 years of age. Oxysterol study: eNAD/EDM affected (nā=ā14, serum; nā=ā11, CSF; nā=ā10, spinal cord [SC]) and unaffected horses 1-4 years of age (nā=ā12, serum; nā=ā10, CSF; nā=ā7, SC).ProceduresCerebrospinal fluid [F2 IsoP] and [F4 NP] were assessed using gas chromatography-negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Serum, CSF, and cervical SC [oxysterols] were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Results were compared with respective Ī±-TOH concentrations.ResultsSpinal cord [7-ketocholesterol], [7-hydroxycholesterol], and [7-keto-27-hydrocholesterol] were higher in eNAD/EDM horses whereas [24-ketocholesterol] was lower. No significant difference was found in CSF [F2 IsoP] and [F4 NP], serum [oxysterols] and CSF [oxysterols] between eNAD/EDM affected and unaffected horses. No correlation was found between [F2 IsoP], [F4 NP], or [oxysterols] and respective [Ī±-TOH].Conclusions and clinical importanceIn the SC, targeted markers of cholesterol oxidation were significantly increased in horses with eNAD/EDM
Modelling a wireless connected swarm of mobile robots
It is a characteristic of swarm robotics that modelling the overall swarm behaviour in terms of the low-level behaviours of individual robots is very difficult. Yet if swarm robotics is to make the transition from the laboratory to real-world engineering realisation such models would be critical for both overall validation of algorithm correctness and detailed parameter optimisation. We seek models with predictive power: models that allow us to determine the effect of modifying parameters in individual robots on the overall swarm behaviour. This paper presents results from a study to apply the probabilistic modelling approach to a class of wireless connected swarms operating in unbounded environments. The paper proposes a probabilistic finite state machine (PFSM) that describes the network connectivity and overall macroscopic behaviour of the swarm, then develops a novel robot-centric approach to the estimation of the state transition probabilities within the PFSM. Using measured data from simulation the paper then carefully validates the PFSM model step by step, allowing us to assess the accuracy and hence the utility of the model. Matera Laser Ranging Observatory (MLRO): An overview
The Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) is currently under negotiation with the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation (BFEC) of the Allied Signal Aerospace Company (ASAC) to build a state-of-the-art laser ranging observatory for the Centro di Geodesia Spaziale, in Matera, Italy. The contract calls for the delivery of a system based on a 1.5 meter afocal Cassegrain astronomical quality telescope with multiple ports to support a variety of experiments for the future, with primary emphasis on laser ranging. Three focal planes, viz. Cassegrain, Coude, and Nasmyth will be available for these experiments. The open telescope system will be protected from dust and turbulence using a specialized dome which will be part of the building facilities to be provided by ASI. The fixed observatory facility will be partitioned into four areas for locating the following: laser, transmit/receive optics, telescope/dome enclosure, and the operations console. The optical tables and mount rest on a common concrete pad for added mechanical stability. Provisions will be in place for minimizing the effects of EMI, for obtaining maximum cleanliness for high power laser and transmit optics, and for providing an ergonomic environment fitting to a state-of-the-art multipurpose laboratory. The system is currently designed to be highly modular and adaptable for scaling or changes in technology. It is conceived to be a highly automated system with superior performance specifications to any currently operational system. Provisions are also made to adapt and accommodate changes that are of significance during the course of design and integration

Design sprint methodologies transformed in a digital environment
How can you deliver innovative teaching to over 150 students to propel their learning, connect them with leading industry experts, solve real world problems, and offer students the chance to learn from their peers across year groups? This paper presents the Design Sprint project; an intense five-day event delivered in 2020/21. This project engaged product design students from Nottingham Trent University (NTU), a team of over ten academics, clients from an industrial design team (Futura Nova), a large healthcare institution (UCL Partners), in addition to partnering with Anglia Ruskin University, to engage with focus groups within healthcare. This paper outlines the preparation and facilitation of the design sprint, identifying why we chose this methodology despite the challenges of remote/online working. The preparation/pre-sprint sessions and the key components of the sprint are discussed, highlighting how we adapted the traditional design sprint model into a hybrid methodology. The activity plan shares the key activities undertaken with examples of the Miro workbooks. Our approach was to build a programme that we could utilise going forward in online or in-person settings, to further develop the product design curriculum at NTU. Our main aim in delivering this methodology was for different year groups to work together in a live collaborative project whilst sharing/learning knowledge from a professional industrial network when utilising a methodology which could be applied in their future professional practice
Chlamydomonas DYX1C1/PF23 is essential for axonemal assembly and proper morphology of inner dynein arms
Cytoplasmic assembly of ciliary dyneins, a process known as preassembly, requires numerous non-dynein proteins, but the identities and functions of these proteins are not fully elucidated. Here, we show that the classical Chlamydomonas motility mutant pf23 is defective in the Chlamydomonas homolog of DYX1C1. The pf23 mutant has a 494 bp deletion in the DYX1C1 gene and expresses a shorter DYX1C1 protein in the cytoplasm. Structural analyses, using cryo-ET, reveal that pf23 axonemes lack most of the inner dynein arms. Spectral counting confirms that DYX1C1 is essential for the assembly of the majority of ciliary inner dynein arms (IDA) as well as a fraction of the outer dynein arms (ODA). A C-terminal truncation of DYX1C1 shows a reduction in a subset of these ciliary IDAs. Sucrose gradients of cytoplasmic extracts show that preassembled ciliary dyneins are reduced compared to wild-type, which suggests an important role in dynein complex stability. The role of PF23/DYX1C1 remains unknown, but we suggest that DYX1C1 could provide a scaffold for macromolecular assembly
The IDA3 adapter, required for intraflagellar transport of I1 dynein, is regulated by ciliary length
Axonemal dyneins, including inner dynein arm I1, assemble in the cytoplasm prior to transport into cilia by intraflagellar transport (IFT). How I1 dynein interacts with IFT is not understood. We take advantage of the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii ida3 mutant, which assembles the inner arm I1 dynein complex in the cytoplasm but fails to transport I1 into the cilium, resulting in I1 dynein-deficient axonemes with abnormal motility. The IDA3 gene encodes an ā¼115-kDa coiled-coil protein that primarily enters the cilium during ciliary growth but is not an axonemal protein. During growth, IDA3, along with I1 dynein, is transported by anterograde IFT to the tip of the cilium. At the tip, IDA3 uncouples from IFT and diffuses within the cilium. IFT transport of IDA3 decreases as cilia lengthen and subsides once full length is achieved. IDA3 is the first example of an essential and selective IFT adapter that is regulated by ciliary length. </jats:p
