    Bound electron nonlinearity beyond the ionization threshold

    Although high field laser-induced ionization is a fundamental process underlying many applications, there have been no absolute measurements of the nonlinear polarizability of atoms and molecules in the presence of ionization. Such information is crucial, for example, for understanding the propagation of high intensity ultrashort pulses in matter. Here, we present absolute space- and time-resolved measurements of the ultrafast laser-driven nonlinear polarizability in argon, krypton, xenon, nitrogen, and oxygen up to an ionization fraction of a few percent. These measurements enable determination of the non-perturbative bound electron nonlinearity well beyond the ionization threshold, where it is found to be approximately linear in intensity

    Effect of a plasma grating on pump-probe experiments near the ionization threshold in gases

    Calculations are performed of the phase shift caused by the spatial modulation in the plasma density due to interference between a strong pump pulse and a weak probe pulse. It is suggested that a recent experiment [Loriot et al., Opt. Express v. 17, 13429 (2009)] observed an effective birefringence from this plasma grating rather than from the higher-order Kerr effect.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. Fix typos and correct number

    Generation and remote detection of THz sound using semiconductor superlattices

    The authors introduce a novel approach to study the propagation of high frequency acoustic phonons in which the generation and detection involves two spatially separated superlattices ∼1μm\sim 1 {\rm \mu m} apart. Propagating modes of frequencies up to ∼1THz\sim 1 {\rm THz} escape from the superlattice where they are generated and reach the second superlattice where they are detected. The measured frequency spectrum reveals finite size effects, which can be accounted for by a continuum elastic model.Comment: Submitted to Applied Physics Letter
