The role of quantum fluctuations in the optomechanical properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring cavity
We analyze a detailed model of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a ring
optical resonator and contrast its classical and quantum properties to those of
a Fabry-P{\'e}rot geometry. The inclusion of two counter-propagating light
fields and three matter field modes leads to important differences between the
two situations. Specifically, we identify an experimentally realizable region
where the system's behavior differs strongly from that of a BEC in a
Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity, and also where quantum corrections become significant.
The classical dynamics are rich, and near bifurcation points in the mean-field
classical system, the quantum fluctuations have a major impact on the system's

Socioeconomic inequalities in attitudes towards cancer: an international cancer benchmarking partnership study.
Socioeconomic status (SES) differences in attitudes towards cancer have been implicated in the differential screening uptake and the timeliness of symptomatic presentation. However, the predominant emphasis of this work has been on cancer fatalism, and many studies focus on specific community subgroups. This study aimed to assess SES differences in positive and negative attitudes towards cancer in UK adults. A population-based sample of UK adults (n=6965, age≥50 years) completed the Awareness and Beliefs about Cancer scale, including six belief items: three positively framed (e.g. 'Cancer can often be cured') and three negatively framed (e.g. 'A cancer diagnosis is a death sentence'). SES was indexed by education. Analyses controlled for sex, ethnicity, marital status, age, self-rated health, and cancer experience. There were few education-level differences for the positive statements, and overall agreement was high (all>90%). In contrast, there were strong differences for negative statements (all Ps<0.001). Among respondents with lower education levels, 57% agreed that 'treatment is worse than cancer', 27% that cancer is 'a death sentence' and 16% 'would not want to know if I have cancer'. Among those with university education, the respective proportions were 34, 17 and 6%. Differences were not explained by cancer experience or health status. In conclusion, positive statements about cancer outcomes attract near-universal agreement. However, this optimistic perspective coexists alongside widespread fears about survival and treatment, especially among less-educated groups. Health education campaigns targeting socioeconomically disadvantaged groups might benefit from a focus on reducing negative attitudes, which is not necessarily achieved by promoting positive attitudes
Photometric Monitoring of the Gravitationally Lensed Ultraluminous BAL Quasar APM08279+5255
We report on one year of photometric monitoring of the ultraluminous BAL
quasar APM 08279+5255. The temporal sampling reveals that this gravitationally
lensed system has brightened by ~0.2 mag in 100 days. Two potential causes
present themselves; either the variability is intrinsic to the quasar, or it is
the result of microlensing by stars in a foreground system. The data is
consistent with both hypotheses and further monitoring is required before
either case can be conclusively confirmed. We demonstrate, however, that
gravitational microlensing can not play a dominant role in explaining the
phenomenal properties exhibited by APM 08279+5255. The identification of
intrinsic variability, coupled with the simple gravitational lensing
configuration, would suggest that APM 08279+5255 is a potential golden lens
from which the cosmological parameters can be derived and is worthy of a

Self-amplification of coherent spontaneous emission in a cherenkov free-electron maser
Ultrashort pulses of microwave radiation have been produced in a dielectric-lined Cherenkov free-electron maser (FEM) amplifier. An intense initial seed pulse, due to coherent spontaneous emission (CSE), arises at the leading edge of the electron pulse. There is evidence to show that 3-4 cycle spikes are produced through the amplification of these seed pulses. A strong dependence of the start-up power on the rise time of the electron pulse has been found. The experimental results are verified by a theoretical analysis. Our study shows that amplification in a FEM amplifier is always initiated by CSE arising from the edge of the electron pulse when the rise time is comparable to the electromagnetic wave period
Investigating magnetic activity in very stable stellar magnetic fields: long-term photometric and spectroscopic study of the fully convective M4 dwarf V374 Peg
The ultrafast-rotating () fully convective
single M4 dwarf V374 Peg is a well-known laboratory for studying intense
stellar activity in a stable magnetic topology. As an observable proxy for the
stellar magnetic field, we study the stability of the light curve, and thus the
spot configuration. We also measure the occurrence rate of flares and coronal
mass ejections (CMEs). We analyse spectroscopic observations,
photometry covering 5 years, and additional photometry that expands the
temporal base over 16 years. The light curve suggests an almost rigid-body
rotation, and a spot configuration that is stable over about 16 years,
confirming the previous indications of a very stable magnetic field. We
observed small changes on a nightly timescale, and frequent flaring, including
a possible sympathetic flare. The strongest flares seem to be more concentrated
around the phase where the light curve indicates a smaller active region.
Spectral data suggest a complex CME with falling-back and re-ejected material,
with a maximal projected velocity of 675km/s. We observed a CME rate
much lower than expected from extrapolations of the solar flare-CME relation to

Ancient Yersinia pestis genomes from across Western Europe reveal early diversification during the First Pandemic (541–750)
The first historically documented pandemic caused by Yersinia pestis began as the Justinianic Plague in 541 within the Roman Empire and continued as the so-called First Pandemic until 750. Although paleogenomic studies have previously identified the causative agent as Y. pestis, little is known about the bacterium’s spread, diversity, and genetic history over the course of the pandemic. To elucidate the microevolution of the bacterium during this time period, we screened human remains from 21 sites in Austria, Britain, Germany, France, and Spain for Y. pestis DNA and reconstructed eight genomes. We present a methodological approach assessing single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ancient bacterial genomes, facilitating qualitative analyses of low coverage genomes from a metagenomic background. Phylogenetic analysis on the eight reconstructed genomes reveals the existence of previously undocumented Y. pestis diversity during the sixth to eighth centuries, and provides evidence for the presence of multiple distinct Y. pestis strains in Europe. We offer genetic evidence for the presence of the Justinianic Plague in the British Isles, previously only hypothesized from ambiguous documentary accounts, as well as the parallel occurrence of multiple derived strains in central and southern France, Spain, and southern Germany. Four of the reported strains form a polytomy similar to others seen across the Y. pestis phylogeny, associated with the Second and Third Pandemics. We identified a deletion of a 45-kb genomic region in the most recent First Pandemic strains affecting two virulence factors, intriguingly overlapping with a deletion found in 17th- to 18th-century genomes of the Second Pandemic. © 2019 National Academy of Sciences. The resilience in illness model, part 1: exploratory evaluation in adolescents and young adults with cancer
BACKGROUND: Resilience is a positive health outcome identified by the Committee on Future Direction for Behavioral and Social Sciences as a research priority for the National Institutes of Health. The Resilience in Illness Model (RIM) was developed from a series of qualitative and quantitative studies, to increase understanding of how positive health protective factors (ie, social integration, family environment, courageous coping, and derived meaning) may influence resilience outcomes. The RIM also includes 2 risk factors: illness-related distress and defensive coping.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this 2-part article was to report on evaluation of the RIM for adolescents/young adults (AYAs) with cancer. Here, in part 1, our purpose was to describe the exploratory RIM evaluation, and in part 2 we describe the confirmatory RIM evaluation.
METHODS: An exploratory evaluation of RIM was done using exploratory latent variable structural equation modeling with a combined sample from 2 studies of preadolescents and AYAs with cancer aged 10 to 26 years (n = 202).
RESULTS: Results, including goodness-of-fit indices, support the RIM as a theory with a high level of explained variance for outcomes of resilience (67%) and self-transcendence (63%). Variance explained for proximal outcomes ranged from 18% to 76%.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate that, following confirmatory testing, the RIM may be a useful guide to developing targeted interventions that are grounded in the experiences of the AYAs.

We present a consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on manifolds admitting
a Sasaki-Einstein structure, which keeps the metric and five real scalar
fields. This theory can be further truncated to a constrained one-parameter
family that depends on only the metric and one scalar, as well as to a theory
with a metric and three scalars. The reduced theory admits supersymmetric and
non-supersymmetric AdS_5 and AdS_4 x R solutions. We analyze the spectrum

RNA Polymerase Pausing during Initial Transcription
In bacteria, RNA polymerase (RNAP) initiates transcription
by synthesizing short transcripts that are
either released or extended to allow RNAP to escape
from the promoter. The mechanism of initial transcription
is unclear due to the presence of transient
intermediates and molecular heterogeneity. Here,
we studied initial transcription on a lac promoter
using single-molecule fluorescence observations
of DNA scrunching on immobilized transcription
complexes. Our work revealed a long pause (‘‘initiation
pause,’’ �20 s) after synthesis of a 6-mer RNA;
such pauses can serve as regulatory checkpoints.
Region sigma 3.2, which contains a loop blocking
the RNA exit channel, was a major pausing determinant.
We also obtained evidence for RNA backtracking
during abortive initial transcription and for
additional pausing prior to escape. We summarized
our work in a model for initial transcription, in which

Faecal Microbiota Transplantation plus selected use of antibiotics for severe-complicated Clostridium difficile infection: description of a protocol with high success rate
Background
Severe and severe/complicated Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) can result in ICU admission, sepsis, toxic megacolon and death. In this setting, colectomy is the standard of care but it is associated with a 50% mortality.
Aim
To evaluate safety and efficacy of a sequential faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and antibiotic protocol in severe and severe/complicated CDI patients who are at high risk for colectomy.
Methods
All patients with severe and severe/complicated CDI refractory to oral vancomycin ± rectal vancomycin and intravenous metronidazole therapy were offered FMT. Treatment consisted of sequential FMTs via colonoscopy with the need for repeat FMT and continued vancomycin guided by clinical response and pseudomembranes at colonoscopy.
Results
A total of 29 patients underwent FMT between July 2013 and August 2014. The overall treatment response of endoscopic sequential FMT was 93% (27/29), with 100% (10/10) for severe CDI and 89% (17/19) for severe/complicated CDI. A single FMT was performed in 62%, two FMTs were performed in 31% and three FMTs in 7% of patients. The use of non-CDI antibiotics predicted repeat FMT (odds ratio = 17.5). The 30-day all-cause mortality after FMT was 7%, and the cumulative 3-month survival was 76%. Of the two patients who died within 30 days, one underwent colectomy and succumbed to sepsis; the other died from septic shock related to CDI.
Conclusion
The success of a treatment protocol for severe and severe/complicated involving faecal microbiota transplantation and continued vancomycin in selected patients was high, and it warrants further evaluation
