Precoder design for space-time coded systems over correlated Rayleigh fading channels using convex optimization

    Get PDF
A class of computationally efficient linear precoders for space-time block coded multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems is derived based on the minimization of the exact symbol error rate (SER) and its upper bound. Both correlations at the transmitter and receiver are assumed to be present, and only statistical channel state information in the form of the transmit and receive correlation matrices is assumed to be available at the transmitter. The convexity of the design based on SER minimization is established and exploited. The advantage of the developed technique is its low complexity. We also find various relationships of the proposed designs to the existing precoding techniques, and derive very simple closed-form precoders for special cases such as two or three receive antennas and constant receive correlation. The numerical simulations illustrate the excellent SER performance of the proposed precoders

An analysis of human gait under slippery conditions using OpenSim\u27s musculoskeletal simulations

Computational simulations of gait under abnormal conditions provide insights into the actions of muscles, its relationships with external reaction forces and motions of the body during slips, trips, and falls - the leading causes of occupational injuries worldwide. OpenSimTM, an open-source motion simulation software, was utilized to construct musculoskeletal structures and create dynamic simulations of body movements. Gaits of eighteen subjects were studied to extract experimentally difficult-to-obtained variables under slippery conditions. The joint angles and moments of hip, knee, ankle and the forces of four prime muscle groups were analyzed for body corrective movements during slip events. Besides, the connections between one\u27s perception of the surrounding environment and their postural alterations to prevent falls are also discussed. Hence, this study provides a better understanding on the joint angles, moments and muscle forces of human body, evaluates the movement deviations, and contributes to the development of predictive injury thresholds during slip events

Automatic sleep staging of EEG signals: recent development, challenges, and future directions.

    Get PDF
Modern deep learning holds a great potential to transform clinical studies of human sleep. Teaching a machine to carry out routine tasks would be a tremendous reduction in workload for clinicians. Sleep staging, a fundamental step in sleep practice, is a suitable task for this and will be the focus in this article. Recently, automatic sleep-staging systems have been trained to mimic manual scoring, leading to similar performance to human sleep experts, at least on scoring of healthy subjects. Despite tremendous progress, we have not seen automatic sleep scoring adopted widely in clinical environments. This review aims to provide the shared view of the authors on the most recent state-of-the-art developments in automatic sleep staging, the challenges that still need to be addressed, and the future directions needed for automatic sleep scoring to achieve clinical value

Metallic characteristics in superlattices composed of insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3

We report on the electronic properties of superlattices composed of three different antiferromagnetic insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Photoemission spectra obtained by tuning the x-ray energy at the Mn 2p -> 3d edge show a Fermi cut-off, indicating metallic behavior mainly originating from Mn e_g electrons. Furthermore, the density of states near the Fermi energy and the magnetization obey a similar temperature dependence, suggesting a correlation between the spin and charge degrees of freedom at the interfaces of these oxides
