Strongly Correlated Cerium Systems: Non-Kondo Mechanism for Moment Collapse
We present an ab initio based method which gives clear insight into the
interplay between the hybridization, the coulomb exchange, and the
crystal-field interactions, as the degree of 4f localization is varied across a
series of strongly correlated cerium systems. The results for the ordered
magnetic moments, magnetic structure, and ordering temperatures are in
excellent agreement with experiment, including the occurence of a moment
collapse of non-Kondo origin. In contrast, standard ab initio density
functional calculations fail to predict, even qualitatively, the trend of the
unusual magentic properties.Comment: A shorter version of this has been submitted to PR
A phase II study of cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil with concurrent hyperfractionated thoracic radiation for locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: a preliminary report from the Okayama Lung Cancer Study Group
A recent meta-analysis and randomized studies have demonstrated that combined chemoradiotherapy is associated with a survival advantage for selected patients with locally advanced unresectable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We conducted a phase II study of combined chemoradiotherapy to find a more effective combination of drugs and radiation than those previously reported for such patients. Between January 1994 and November 1996, 50 previously untreated patients with locally advanced unresectable NSCLC (stage IIIA with N2 or IIIB disease) were entered in this study. Patients were required to have Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status †2, age †75 years and adequate organ function. Treatment consisted of three cycles of cisplatin (20 mg mâ2, days 1â5) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) (500 mg mâ2, days 1â5) every 4 weeks, and concurrent hyperfractionated thoracic radiation (1.25 Gy twice daily, with a 6-h interfraction interval; total radiation dose, 62.5â70 Gy). Of the 50 patients entered, 37 (74%) responded to this chemoradiotherapy, including two (4%) with complete response. By a median follow-up time of 41.0 months, 35 patiennts had died and 15 were stil alive. The median time to progression for responding patients was 14.1 months (range, 2.6â51.3+ months). The median survival time was 18.7 months, with a survival rate of 66.0% at 1 year, 46.0% at 2 years and 27.6% at 3 years. Survival outcome was strongly affected by the extent of nodal involvement (median survival time, 27.4 months for N0â2 disease (n = 37) vs 10.7 months for N3 disease (n = 13);P = 0.007). The major toxicities of treatment were leukopenia and neutropenia (â„ Grade 3, 58% and 60% respectively). Other toxicities of â„ Grade 3 included thrombocytopenia (26%), anaemia (26%), nausea/vomiting (16%) and radiation oesophagitis (6%). Treatment-related death occurred for one patient. Our findings suggest that cisplatin and 5-FU in combination with concurrent hyperfractionated thoracic radiation is effective and feasible for the treatment of locally advanced unresectable NSCLC. The short-term survival in this study appeared to be more encouraging than those of similar chemoradiation trials. A randomized trial will be needed to compare the combination of cisplatin and 5-FU with other platinum-based regimens together with concurrent hyperfractionated thoracic radiation. In addition, in future studies, inclusion criteria for N3 disease with or without supraclavicular involvement should be reconsidered to correctly evaluate the effect of combined chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced unresectable NSCLC. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Analyzing ligation mixtures using a PCR based method
We have developed a simple and effective method (Lig-PCR) for monitoring ligation reactions using PCR and primers that are common to many cloning vectors. Ligation mixtures can directly be used as templates and the results can be analyzed by conventional gel electrophoresis. The PCR products are representative of the recombinant molecules created during ligation and the corresponding transformants. Orientation of inserts can also be determined using an internal primer. The usefulness of this method has been demonstrated using ligation mixtures of two cDNAâs derived from the salivary glands of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The method described here is sensitive and easy to perform compared to currently available methods
Involvement of concentrative nucleoside transporter 1 in intestinal absorption of trifluorothymidine, a novel antitumor nucleoside, in rats
there is little information regarding TFT absorption. Therefore, we investigated TFT absorption in the rat small intestine. After oral administration of TFT in rats, more than 75% of the TFT was absorbed. To identify the uptake transport system, uptake studies were conducted by using everted sacs prepared from rat small intestines. TFT uptake was saturable, significantly reduced under Na + -free conditions, and strongly inhibited by the addition of an endogenous pyrimidine nucleoside. From these results, we suggested the involvement of concentrative nucleoside transporters (CNTs) in TFT absorption into rat small intestine. In rat small intestines, the mRNAs coding for rat CNT1 (rCNT1) and rCNT2, but not for rCNT3, were predominantly expressed. To investigate the roles of rCNT1 and rCNT2 in TFT uptake, we conducted uptake assays by using Xenopus laevis oocytes injected with rCNT1 complementary RNA (cRNA) and rCNT2 cRNA. TFT uptake by Xenopus oocytes injected with rCNT1 cRNA, and not rCNT2 cRNA, was significantly greater than that by JPET#186296 5 water-injected oocytes. Additionally, in situ single-pass perfusion experiments performed using rat jejunum regions showed that thymidine, a substrate for CNT1, strongly inhibited TFT uptake. In conclusion, TFT is absorbed via rCNT1 in the intestinal lumen in rats
Relationship of dietary monounsaturated fatty acids to blood pressure: the international study of macro/micronutrients and blood pressure
Objective: In short-term feeding trials, replacement of other macronutrients with monounsaturated fatty acid reduces blood pressure. However, observational studies have not clearly demonstrated a relationship between monounsaturated fatty acid intake and blood pressure. We report associations of monounsaturated fatty acid intake of individuals with blood pressure in a cross-sectional study.
Methods: The International Study of Macro/Micronutrients and Blood Pressure is a cross-sectional epidemiologic study of 4,680 men and women ages 40-59 from 17 population samples in China, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States. Nutrient intake data were based on four in-depth multi-pass 24-hour dietary recalls/person and two timed 24-hour urine collections/person. Blood pressure was measured eight times at four visits.
Results: Mean monounsaturated fatty acid intake ranged from 8.1 %kcal (China) to 12.2%kcal (United States). With sequential models to control for possible confounders (dietary, other), linear regression analyses showed significant inverse relationship of total monounsaturated fatty acid intake with diastolic blood pressure for all participants; for 2,238 ânon-intervenedâ individuals, the relationship was stronger. Estimated diastolic blood pressure differences with 2-SD higher monounsaturated fatty acids (5.35 %kcal) were -0.82 mm Hg (P<0.05) for all participants and -1.70 mm Hg (P<0.01) for non-intervened individuals. Inverse associations of dietary total oleic acid (main monounsaturated) with blood pressure in non-intervened individuals were not significant, but those of oleic acid from vegetable sources were stronger and significant (P<0.05).
Conclusions: Dietary monounsaturated fatty acid intake, especially oleic acid from vegetable sources, may contribute to prevention and control of adverse blood pressure levels in general populations.

Multiple - pion production by 200-GeV/c muons
The main objectives of this experiment are to study the multiple-pion production, especially fire ball-like behavior at the known muon energy, and to compare with the cosmic ray data by means of cloud chambers containing lead plates and with emulsion stack data in the lower energy region (5GeV/c). The cloud chamber data by cosmic ray muons has been investigated by means of the One Fire Ball Model (the mesons are emitted from excited centers) in the energy range of 10 to 100 GeV, while the emulsion data at 5 GeV/c have indicated dominant contributions from isobars (the excited baryon of 1238 MeV). In the cosmic ray data we can not discuss more details of 'the fire ball', such as its mass or temperature, because those incident muon energies can not be estimated directly
