Phase diagram of a 1 dimensional spin-orbital model

We study a 1 dimensional spin-orbital model using both analytical and numerical methods. Renormalization group calculations are performed in the vicinity of a special integrable point in the phase diagram with SU(4) symmetry. These indicate the existence of a gapless phase in an extended region of the phase diagram, missed in previous studies. This phase is SU(4) invariant at low energies apart from the presence of different velocities for spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The phase transition into a gapped dimerized phase is in a generalized Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class. The phase diagram of this model is sketched using the density matrix renormalization group technique.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, new references adde

Epigenetic regulation of interleukin-8, an inflammatory chemokine, in osteoarthritis

SummaryObjectiveTo determine whether altered IL8 methylation status is associated with increased expression of IL8 in human osteoarthritic (OA) chondrocytes.MethodsIL8 expression levels and the percentage CpG methylation in human chondrocytes were quantified by qRT-PCR and pyrosequencing in OA patients and in non-OA osteoporotic controls. The effect of CpG methylation on IL8 promoter activity was determined using a CpG-free vector; co-transfections with expression vectors encoding nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), AP-1 and C/EBP were subsequently undertaken to analyse for IL8 promoter activity in response to changes in methylation status.ResultsIL8 expression in OA patients was 37-fold higher than in osteoporotic controls. Three CpG sites in the IL8 promoter were significantly demethylated in OA patients. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the degree of methylation of the CpG site located at −116-bp was the strongest predictor of IL8 expression. In vitro DNA methylation was noted to decrease IL8 promoter basal activity. Furthermore, NF-κB, AP-1 and C/EBP strongly enhanced IL8 promoter activity whilst DNA methylation inhibited the effects of these three transcription factors.ConclusionsThe present study demonstrates the key role of DNA methylation status on the expression of IL8 in human chondrocytes. We demonstrate a quantitative relationship between percentage methylation and gene expression within clinical samples. These studies provide direct evidence linking the activation of IL8, DNA demethylation and the induction of the OA process with important therapeutic implications therein for patients with this debilitating disease

Gapless Excitation above a Domain Wall Ground State in a Flat Band Hubbard Model

We construct a set of exact ground states with a localized ferromagnetic domain wall and with an extended spiral structure in a deformed flat-band Hubbard model in arbitrary dimensions. We show the uniqueness of the ground state for the half-filled lowest band in a fixed magnetization subspace. The ground states with these structures are degenerate with all-spin-up or all-spin-down states under the open boundary condition. We represent a spin one-point function in terms of local electron number density, and find the domain wall structure in our model. We show the existence of gapless excitations above a domain wall ground state in dimensions higher than one. On the other hand, under the periodic boundary condition, the ground state is the all-spin-up or all-spin-down state. We show that the spin-wave excitation above the all-spin-up or -down state has an energy gap because of the anisotropy.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. Typos are fixe

On gonihedric loops and quantum gravity

We present an analysis of the gonihedric loop model, a reformulation of the two dimensional gonihedric spin model, using two different techniques. First, the usual regular lattice statistical physics problem is mapped onto a height model and studied analytically. Second, the gravitational version of this loop model is studied via matrix models techniques. Both methods lead to the conclusion that the model has cmatter=0c_{matter}=0 for all values of the parameters of the model. In this way it is possible to understand the absence of a continuous transition

Gauge Theory Description of Spin Ladders

A s=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain is equivalent to the two-flavor massless Schwinger model in an uniform background charge density in the strong coupling. The gapless mode of the spin chain is represented by a massless boson of the Schwinger model. In a two-leg spin ladder system the massless boson aquires a finite mass due to inter-chain interactions. The gap energy is found to be about .25 k |J'| when the inter-chain Heisenberg coupling J' is small compared with the intra-chain Heisenberg coupling. k is a constant of O(1). It is also shown that a cyclically symmetric N-leg ladder system is gapless or gapful for an odd or even N, respectively.Comment: 8 pages. CORRIGENDUM has been incorporated. Magnetic properties of an SU(4) spin-orbital chain

In this paper, we study the magnetic properties of the one-dimensional SU(4) spin-orbital model by solving its Bethe ansatz solution numerically. It is found that the magnetic properties of the system for the case of gt=1.0g_t=1.0 differs from that for the case of gt=0.0g_t=0.0. The magnetization curve and susceptibility are obtained for a system of 200 sites. For 0<gt<gs0<g_t<g_s, the phase diagram depending on the magnetic field and the ratio of Land\'e factors, gt/gsg_t/g_s, is obtained. Four phases with distinct magnetic properties are found.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Phase diagram and symmetry breaking of SU(4) spin-orbital chain in a generalized external field

The ground state phases of a one-dimensional SU(4) spin-orbital Hamiltonian in a generalized external field are studied on the basis of Bethe-ansatz solution. Introducing three Land\'e gg factors for spin, orbital and their products in the SU(4) Zeeman term, we discuss systematically the various symmetry breaking. The magnetization versus external field are obtained by solving Bethe-ansatz equations numerically. The phase diagrams corresponding to distinct residual symmetries are given by means of both numerical and analytical methods.Comment: Revtex4, 16 pages, 7 figure

Loop Model with Generalized Fugacity in Three Dimensions

A statistical model of loops on the three-dimensional lattice is proposed and is investigated. It is O(n)-type but has loop fugacity that depends on global three-dimensional shapes of loops in a particular fashion. It is shown that, despite this non-locality and the dimensionality, a layer-to-layer transfer matrix can be constructed as a product of local vertex weights for infinitely many points in the parameter space. Using this transfer matrix, the site entropy is estimated numerically in the fully packed limit.Comment: 16pages, 4 eps figures, (v2) typos and Table 3 corrected.
