From the Ground Up: Strengthening Health Systems at District Level (Introduction)
This supplement introduces the African Health Initiative (AHI), a research program comprised of five unique district health system-strengthening activities in Ghana, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia that beganin 2009. This supplement should be of interest to all engaged in improving delivery of district primary health care -- whether ministries of health, service providers, funders, or those who evaluate complex interventions. The five AHI projects, known as Population Health Implementation and Training (PHIT) Partnerships, are funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) with a common goal: to produce significant, measureable health improvements in a defined geographic area over a five to seven year grant period.With the partnerships in their fourth year of funding, it is now possible to capture lessons learned in project design and implementation. The Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award: A Seven-Year Retrospective and Summary
During an interval of 15 years, the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust spent over $500 million on four programs in the basic biomedical sciences that support the education and research of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty, and senior researchers. The Markey Trust asked the NRC to evaluate these programs with two questions in mind: "Were these funds well spent?" and "What can others in the biomedical and philanthropic communities learn from the programs of the Markey Trust, both as an approach to funding biomedical research and as a model of philanthropy?" One of five resulting reports, this volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held in June 2005 to investigate methods used to evaluate funding of the biomedical scientists by philanthropic and public funders. In addition to the Markey Trust, representatives from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the American Heart Association, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and six other funders of biomedical scientists presented information on evaluation methodologies and outcome
Global unions: chasing the dream or building the reality?
This article takes as its theme the global restructuring of capital and its impact on worker organization. It argues for a reassertion of class in any analysis of global solidarity, and assesses the opportunities and barriers to effective global unionization. Rooted in the UK experience, the article analyzes the impact of the European social dimension on trade unions, before taking the discussion into a global dimension. It concludes by suggesting that there are reasons for cautious optimism in terms of solidarity building, despite difficult historical legacies and the common replacement of action with rhetoric
Constructing transnational solidarity: the role of campaign governance
Our inductive study of two transnational labour solidarity efforts focuses on the role of campaign governance. Specifically, we study contrasting campaign strategies, tactics and coalition structures in campaigns by two global union federations, UNI Global Union and the IUF, contextualized in terms of how these campaigns unfolded in India. Our contribution consists of two arguments. The first is that a degree of internal consistency amongst different campaign elements is important for success, and the second is that a mode of articulation that allows for local concerns in affiliate countries to find voice in global campaigns is more likely to result in concrete gains at the local level
The AMS-02 RICH Imager Prototype - In-Beam Tests with 20 GeV/c per Nucleon Ions -
A prototype of the AMS Cherenkov imager (RICH) has been tested at CERN by
means of a low intensity 20 GeV/c per nucleon ion beam obtained by
fragmentation of a primary beam of Pb ions. Data have been collected with a
single beam setting, over the range of nuclear charges 2<Z<~45 in various beam
conditions and using different radiators. The charge Z and velocity beta

The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) of the AMS experiment
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment to be installed on the
International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity focusing
Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the electric charge and
velocity of the charged cosmic particles. A RICH prototype consisting of 96
photomultiplier units, including a piece of the conical reflector, was built
and its performance evaluated with ion beam data. Preliminary results of the
in-beam tests performed with ion fragments resulting from collisions of a 158
GeV/c/nuc primary beam of Indium ions (CERN SPS) on a Pb target are reported.
The collected data included tests to the final front-end electronics and to
different aerogel radiators. Cherenkov rings for a large range of charged
nuclei and with reflected photons were observed. The data analysis confirms the
design goals. Charge separation up to Fe and velocity resolution of the order

Automating Access Control Logics in Simple Type Theory with LEO-II
Garg and Abadi recently proved that prominent access control logics can be
translated in a sound and complete way into modal logic S4. We have previously
outlined how normal multimodal logics, including monomodal logics K and S4, can
be embedded in simple type theory (which is also known as higher-order logic)
and we have demonstrated that the higher-order theorem prover LEO-II can
automate reasoning in and about them. In this paper we combine these results
and describe a sound and complete embedding of different access control logics
in simple type theory. Employing this framework we show that the off the shelf
theorem prover LEO-II can be applied to automate reasoning in prominent access
