    Urinary neurotransmitter metabolites in drug‐free chronic schizophrenic patients measured by gas chromatography selected positive ion monitoring

    The free urinary metabolites, homovanillic, indoleacetic and 5‐hydroxyindoleacetic acid were measured in 24 h urines obtained from seven highly selected drug‐free chronic schizophrenic patients and seven mentally normal control subjects on a low amine diet. Gas chromatography selected ion monitoring of silylated extracts was used to assay each metabolite using its own deuterated form as an internal standard. In the electron impact mode the positive ion fragments used to quantitate the amount of each metabolite in the urine were, respectively, m/z209/211 for homovanillic acid, 319/321 for indoleacetic acid and 290/292 for 5‐hydroxyindoleacetic acid. It was found essential that each compound be assayed using its own deuterated derivative as the internal standard. When expressed per mg creatinine, the homovanillic and 5‐hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels of the chronic schizophrenic patients were in the normal range, but indoleacetic acid was slightly and statistically significantly higher, p = 0.01.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/144614/1/bms1200060804.pd

    It was observed that intraventricular (i.vt.) injection of HC-3 produced markedly different effects upon the EEG of the dog, dependent upon dose. The high dose (5 mg) investigated in this paper produced seizures with a 20 min latency. This effect was compared with the effects of several drugs known to act on the cholinergic system, and in addition the effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) of several brain regions was determined. It was concluded that the HC-3-induced EEG seizures probably did not occur as a result of AChE inhibition but resulted from a direct action on possible cholinergic receptors.     Connecting Mentally Ill Detainees in Large Urban Jails with Community Care

    Large urban jails have become a collection point for many persons with severe mental illness. Connections between jail and community mental health services are needed to assure in-jail care and to promote successful community living following release. This paper addresses this issue for 2855 individuals with severe mental illness who received community mental health services prior to jail detention in King County (Seattle), Washington over a 5-year time period using a unique linked administrative data source. Logistic regression was used to determine the probability that a detainee with severe mental illness received mental health services while in jail as a function of demographic and clinical characteristics. Overall, 70 % of persons with severe mental illness did receive in-jail mental health treatment. Small, but statistically significant sex and race differences were observed in who received treatment in the jail psychiatric unit or from the jail infirmary. Findings confirm the jail's central role in mental health treatment and emphasize the need for greater information sharing and collaboration with community mental health agencies to minimize jail use and to facilitate successful community reentry for detainees with severe mental illness

    Effects of mecamylamine on the Golgi recurrent collateral--Renshaw-cell synapse in the spinal cord

    The fact that mecamylamine is a secondary amine with "nicotinic" blocking properties suggested it would act at the Golgi recurrent collateral--Renshaw-cell synapse in the spinal cord. Glass micropipettes were used to obtain extracellular Renshaw-cell discharges due to antidromic ventral root stimulation in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. The effects of mecamylamine, hexamethonium, physostigmine, and nicotine given intravenously were determined in this preparation. It was found that mecamylamine reduced the terminal portions of the repetitive discharge of Renshaw cells to antidromic stimulation. The stimulant effect of physostigmine and nicotine on Renshaw cells was blocked by mecamylamine.     Effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine on electrically evoked responses in the cat visual system and modification by neuroleptic agents,

    The effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine on electrically evoked potentials in the visual system of the cat and the interaction of selected neuroleptic agents with dimethyltryptamine were studied. Dimethyltryptamine caused a dose-dependent decrease in the amplitude of the response evoked by stimulation of the optic chiasm as recorded in the lateral geniculate nucleus and the visual cortex. Dimethyltryptamine had no significant effect on antidromically evoked potentials in the lateral geniculate nucleus or potentials in the visual cortex produced by optic radiation stimulation. A dose-dependent biphasic effect was found in animals pretreated with various doses of chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thiothixene, molindone, methiothepin and octoclothepin. Methiothepin and octoclothepin were the most potent antagonists of dimethyltryptamine, while molindone was essentially ineffective.
