    Freezing as a Path to Build Complex Composites

    International audienceOne-Sentence Summary: Freezing is harnessed to create composites that replicate the intricate structure of nacre and to synthesize porous bone substitutes with high strength. Abstract: Materials that are strong, ultra-light weight and tough are in demand for a range of applications, requiring architectures and components carefully designed from the micrometer down to nanometer scales. Nacre—a structure found in many molluscan shells—and bone are frequently used as examples for how nature achieves this through hybrid organic-inorganic composites. Unfortunately, it has proven extremely difficult to transcribe nacre-like clever designs into synthetic materials, partly because their intricate structures need to be replicated at several length scales. We demonstrate how the physics of ice formation can be used to develop sophisticated porous and layered-hybrid materials, including artificial bone, ceramic/metal composites, and porous scaffolds for osseous tissue regeneration with strengths up to four times higher than those currently used for implantation

    A Method for Compiling and Executing Expressive Assertions

    Programming with assertions constitutes an effective tool to detect and correct programming errors. The ability of executing formal specifications is essential in order to test automatically a program with respect to its assertions. However, formal specifications may describe recursive models which are difficult to identify so current assertion checkers limit, in a considerable way, the expressivity of the assertion language. In this paper, we are interested in showing how transformational synthesis can help to execute “expressive” assertions of the form ∀x(r(x) ⇔ QyR(x, y)) where x is a set of variables to be instantiated at execution time, Q is an existential or universal quantifier and R a quantifier free formula in the language of a particular first-order theory A we call assertion context. The class of assertion contexts is interesting because it presents a balance between expressiveness for writing assertions and existence of effective methods for executing them by means of synthesized (definite) logic programs

    Fabrication andin vitro characterization of three-dimensional organic/inorganic scaffolds by robocasting

    International audienceA key issue for the fabrication of scaffolds for tissue engineering is the development of processing techniques flexible enough to produce materials with a wide spectrum of solubility (bioresorption rates) and mechanical properties matching those of calcified tissues. These techniques must also have the capability of generating adequate porosity to further serve as a framework for cell penetration, new bone formation, and subsequent remodeling. In this study, we show how hybrid organic/inorganic scaffolds with controlled microstructures can be built using robotic assisted deposition at room temperature. Polylactide or polycaprolactone scaffolds with pore sizes ranging between 200–500 ÎŒm and hydroxyapatite contents up to 70 wt % were fabricated. Compressive tests revealed an anisotropic behavior of the scaffolds, strongly dependent on their chemical composition. The inclusion of an inorganic component increased their stiffness but they were not brittle and could be easily machined even for ceramic contents up to 70 wt %. The mechanical properties of hybrid scaffolds did not degrade significantly after 20 days in simulated body fluid. However, the stiffness of pure polylactide scaffolds increased drastically due to polymer densification. Scaffolds containing bioactive glasses were also printed. After 20 days in simulated body fluid they developed an apatite layer on their surface

    On completeness of logic programs

    Program correctness (in imperative and functional programming) splits in logic programming into correctness and completeness. Completeness means that a program produces all the answers required by its specification. Little work has been devoted to reasoning about completeness. This paper presents a few sufficient conditions for completeness of definite programs. We also study preserving completeness under some cases of pruning of SLD-trees (e.g. due to using the cut). We treat logic programming as a declarative paradigm, abstracting from any operational semantics as far as possible. We argue that the proposed methods are simple enough to be applied, possibly at an informal level, in practical Prolog programming.     Ultra-short pulses in linear and nonlinear media

    We consider the evolution of ultra-short optical pulses in linear and nonlinear media. For the linear case, we first show that the initial-boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations in which a pulse is injected into a quiescent medium at the left endpoint can be approximated by a linear wave equation which can then be further reduced to the linear short-pulse equation. A rigorous proof is given that the solution of the short pulse equation stays close to the solutions of the original wave equation over the time scales expected from the multiple scales derivation of the short pulse equation. For the nonlinear case we compare the predictions of the traditional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE) approximation which those of the short pulse equation (SPE). We show that both equations can be derived from Maxwell's equations using the renormalization group method, thus bringing out the contrasting scales. The numerical comparison of both equations to Maxwell's equations shows clearly that as the pulse length shortens, the NLSE approximation becomes steadily less accurate while the short pulse equation provides a better and better approximation

    Low-Temperature Mobility of Surface Electrons and Ripplon-Phonon Interaction in Liquid Helium

    The low-temperature dc mobility of the two-dimensional electron system localized above the surface of superfluid helium is determined by the slowest stage of the longitudinal momentum transfer to the bulk liquid, namely, by the interaction of surface and volume excitations of liquid helium, which rapidly decreases with temperature. Thus, the temperature dependence of the low-frequency mobility is \mu_{dc} = 8.4x10^{-11}n_e T^{-20/3} cm^4 K^{20/3}/(V s), where n_e is the surface electron density. The relation T^{20/3}E_\perp^{-3} << 2x10^{-7} between the pressing electric field (in kV/cm) and temperature (in K) and the value \omega < 10^8 T^5 K^{-5}s^{-1} of the driving-field frequency have been obtained, at which the above effect can be observed. In particular, E_\perp = 1 kV/cm corresponds to T < 70 mK and \omega/2\pi < 30 Hz.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Pricing Bodies: A Feminist New Materialist Approach to the Relations Between the Economic and Socio-Cultural

    Arguments that the economic and socio-cultural should be understood as relational and intertwined, and that price involves a reciprocal relationship between the economic and socio-cultural, are increasingly prevalent in the social sciences. I develop these notions of relationality and reciprocation through a feminist new materialist perspective, which emphasises the entanglement of and intra-action between what might usually be seen as independent and autonomous entities. To do this, I focus on a range of recent body-image initiatives, led by government, corporate and non-profit organisations, which aim to improve girls’ and young women’s levels of confidence and self-esteem. I explore how feminist theory tends to see such initiatives in terms of the expansion of the economic sphere into the socio-cultural, which involves a tainting or contamination of embodiment and feeling. Rather than dispute these arguments, I take seriously theories and practices from cultural economy that see the economic and socio-cultural as co-constitutive. I augment these ideas with a feminist new materialist approach and argue that the economic and socio-cultural are in intra-active relations: they do not precede or exist apart from each other. In doing so, I consider how body-image initiatives can be understood as phenomena produced through these entangled intra-active relations, and offer an understanding of pricing as a simultaneously socio-cultural and economic process, where value and values become. I also raise questions regarding how, ethically and politically, boundary making and unmaking can be conceived, and how despite being in entangled relations, asymmetries between economic and socio-cultural relations may be approached
