Z_{12-I} Orbifold Compactification toward SUSY Standard Model
We explain the orbifold compactification in string models and present a
Z_{12-I} orbifold compactification toward supersymmetric standard models. We
also point out an effective R-parity from this string construction. The VEVs of

A Comparison of Different Machine Transliteration Models
Machine transliteration is a method for automatically converting words in one
language into phonetically equivalent ones in another language. Machine
transliteration plays an important role in natural language applications such
as information retrieval and machine translation, especially for handling
proper nouns and technical terms. Four machine transliteration models --
grapheme-based transliteration model, phoneme-based transliteration model,
hybrid transliteration model, and correspondence-based transliteration model --
have been proposed by several researchers. To date, however, there has been
little research on a framework in which multiple transliteration models can
operate simultaneously. Furthermore, there has been no comparison of the four
models within the same framework and using the same data. We addressed these
problems by 1) modeling the four models within the same framework, 2) comparing
them under the same conditions, and 3) developing a way to improve machine
transliteration through this comparison. Our comparison showed that the hybrid
and correspondence-based models were the most effective and that the four
models can be used in a complementary manner to improve machine transliteration
performance
Development of airborne hemispheric spectrometer
A new concept of hyperspectral instrument is presented. Novel design of hyperspectral skydome allows retrieval of atmospheric constituents and properties from a snapshot of spectral solar radiation over entire sky, regardless of platform motion either on ground or aircraft. Design and description of subsystems of the instrument are given followed by preliminary tolerance analysis, whose results are to be added in the retrieval algorithm along with hardware specifications. Extended application of the hyperspectral skydome is being carried out filling in the gap in the imaging spectrometry
Design sensitivity analysis and optimization of built-up structures
Developments during the course of the research in design sensitivity analysis and optimization of built-up structures, with both sizing and shape design variables, show clearly that a unified variational approach to design sensitivity analysis can yield derivatives of structural response with respect to design. Rigorous and practically computable results for structural components and built-up structures have been demonstrated and used to solve design optimization problems
Two-Electron Linear Intersubband Light Absorption in a Biased Quantum Well
We point out a novel manifestation of many-body correlations in the linear
optical response of electrons confined in a quantum well. Namely, we
demonstrate that along with conventional absorption peak at frequency close to
intersubband energy, there exists an additional peak at double frequency. This
new peak is solely due to electron-electron interactions, and can be understood
as excitation of two electrons by a single photon. The actual peak lineshape is
comprised of a sharp feature, due to excitation of pairs of intersubband
plasmons, on top of a broader band due to absorption by two single-particle
excitations. The two-plasmon contribution allows to infer intersubband plasmon
dispersion from linear absorption experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; published versio
Charmonium levels near threshold and the narrow state X(3872) \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\jpsi
We explore the influence of open-charm channels on charmonium properties, and
profile the 1:3D2, 1:3D3 and 2:1P1 charmonium candidates for X(3872). The
favored candidates, the 1:3D2 and 1:3D3 levels, both have prominent radiative
decays. The 1:3D2 might be visible in the channel, while
the dominant decay of the 1:3D3 state should be into . We propose
that additional discrete charmonium levels can be discovered as narrow

Design sensitivity analysis using EAL. Part 1: Conventional design parameters
A numerical implementation of design sensitivity analysis of builtup structures is presented, using the versatility and convenience of an existing finite element structural analysis code and its database management system. The finite element code used in the implemenatation presented is the Engineering Analysis Language (EAL), which is based on a hybrid method of analysis. It was shown that design sensitivity computations can be carried out using the database management system of EAL, without writing a separate program and a separate database. Conventional (sizing) design parameters such as cross-sectional area of beams or thickness of plates and plane elastic solid components are considered. Compliance, displacement, and stress functionals are considered as performance criteria. The method presented is being extended to implement shape design sensitivity analysis using a domain method and a design component method
