    ALCOA #1 (41AN87): A Frankston Phase Settlement along Mound Prairie Creek, Anderson County, Texas

    The ALCOA #1 (41AN87) site is a Frankston Phase (ca. A.D. 1400-1650) site located on a high alluvial terrace of Mound Prairie Creek, about seven kilometers northeast of Palestine, Texas. Mound Prairie Creek, a perennial stream, flows southeast to east across the county and drains into the Neches River. The site is approximately 10 meters above the Mound Prairie Creek floodplain, and the creek channel is 300 meters to the south. Although the investigations at the site have been rather limited to date, it appears that the ALCOA #1 site is a single component Frankston Phase homestead, or possibly a small hamlet. Other Frankston phase sites are known on Mound Prairie Creek, Hurricane Creek, Walnut Creek, and Brushy Creek, all Neches River tributaries, and the possibility exists that these may be part of a larger related Caddo community and settlement system

    Formation of plasma around a small meteoroid: 1. Kinetic theory

    This article is a companion to Dimant and Oppenheim [2017] https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JA023963.This paper calculates the spatial distribution of the plasma responsible for radar head echoes by applying the kinetic theory developed in the companion paper. This results in a set of analytic expressions for the plasma density as a function of distance from the meteoroid. It shows that at distances less than a collisional mean free path from the meteoroid surface, the plasma density drops in proportion to 1/R where R is the distance from the meteoroid center; and, at distances much longer than the mean‐free‐path behind the meteoroid, the density diminishes at a rate proportional to 1/R2.     Using beet pulp to adapt cattle to finishing diets compared to traditional grain adaptation with alfalfa hay

    A study was conducted to compare grain adaptation programs using beet pulp (BP) to traditional grain adaptation with alfalfa hay (AH). Yearling crossbred steers (n = 232; BW = 326 ± 14.5 kg) were separated into 3 weight blocks, stratified by BW, and assigned randomly, within strata, to 18 feedlot pens, with 12 or 13 steers per pen. Treatments were imposed during grain adaptation (21 d) using 3 grain adaptation programs. Within each grain adaptation program, 4 step rations were fed for 3, 4, 7, and 7 d. Each program increased dry-rolled corn inclusion while roughage inclusion decreased. In the control treatment (CON), AH inclusion decreased from 46 to 6% and pressed BP (24% DM) was held constant at 6% in all step rations. Beet pulp adaptation programs included a low BP treatment (LOBP) where BP was decreased from 18 to 6% and AH from 34 to 6% or a high BP treatment (HIBP) in which both BP and AH were decreased from 26 to 6%. On d 22 through the remainder of the finishing period cattle were fed a common diet (62% dry rolled corn, 20% wet distillers grains with solubles, 6% AH, 6% BP, 0.25% urea, and 5.75% liquid supplement DM basis). During grain adaptation, cattle fed CON tended (P = 0.07 for overall F test, P = 0.02 for mean comparison) to have greater DMI than HIPB and LOPB was intermediate (9.9, 9.5, and 9.7 kg, respectively). Gain and G:F were not different (P \u3e 0.19) among treatments during the grain adaptation period. However, based off of carcass adjusted final BW, steers adapted using HIBP and LOBP tended (P = 0.07 for overall F-test, P = 0.04 for mean comparison) to have greater ADG compared with CON (1.65, 1.72, and 1.73 kg, respectively). Overall G:F was not different (P = 0.11) among treatments. Dry matter intakes were not different across all treatments (P = 0.58). Carcass characteristics were not affected by adaptation method (P \u3e 0.31). Replacing up to 50% of AH with BP during grain adaptation increased ADG and may be used as an alternative to conventional adaptation programs

    Numerical simulations of numerous quantum systems suffer from the notorious sign problem. Important examples include QCD and other field theories at non-zero chemical potential, at non-zero vacuum angle, or with an odd number of flavors, as well as the Hubbard model for high-temperature superconductivity and quantum antiferromagnets in an external magnetic field. In all these cases standard simulation algorithms require an exponentially large statistics in large space-time volumes and are thus impossible to use in practice. Meron-cluster algorithms realize a general strategy to solve severe sign problems but must be constructed for each individual case.     An inquiry-based learning approach to teaching information retrieval

    The study of information retrieval (IR) has increased in interest and importance with the explosive growth of online information in recent years. Learning about IR within formal courses of study enables users of search engines to use them more knowledgeably and effectively, while providing the starting point for the explorations of new researchers into novel search technologies. Although IR can be taught in a traditional manner of formal classroom instruction with students being led through the details of the subject and expected to reproduce this in assessment, the nature of IR as a topic makes it an ideal subject for inquiry-based learning approaches to teaching. In an inquiry-based learning approach students are introduced to the principles of a subject and then encouraged to develop their understanding by solving structured or open problems. Working through solutions in subsequent class discussions enables students to appreciate the availability of alternative solutions as proposed by their classmates. Following this approach students not only learn the details of IR techniques, but significantly, naturally learn to apply them in solution of problems. In doing this they not only gain an appreciation of alternative solutions to a problem, but also how to assess their relative strengths and weaknesses. Developing confidence and skills in problem solving enables student assessment to be structured around solution of problems. Thus students can be assessed on the basis of their understanding and ability to apply techniques, rather simply their skill at reciting facts. This has the additional benefit of encouraging general problem solving skills which can be of benefit in other subjects. This approach to teaching IR was successfully implemented in an undergraduate module where students were assessed in a written examination exploring their knowledge and understanding of the principles of IR and their ability to apply them to solving problems, and a written assignment based on developing an individual research proposal

    Using Bi-Weekly Surveys to Portray Adolescent Partnership Dynamics: Lessons From a Mobile Diary Study.

    Partnership formation is an important developmental task for adolescents, but cross-sectional and periodic longitudinal studies have lacked the measurement precision to portray partnership stability and flux and to capture the range of adolescent partnership experiences. This article assesses the promises and challenges of using bi-weekly mobile diaries administered over the course of a year to study adolescent partnership dynamics. Descriptive findings illustrate the potential of bi-weekly diaries for both capturing the longitudinal complexity and fluidity of adolescent partnerships as well as for reducing retrospection biases. Results also underscore several challenges, including those posed by missing data, and highlight several strategies for maximizing participant engagement and reliably tracing adolescent partnerships

    Before sailing on a domain-wall sea

    We discuss the very different roles of the valence-quark and the sea-quark residual masses (mresvm_{res}^v and mressm_{res}^s) in dynamical domain-wall fermions simulations. Focusing on matrix elements of the effective weak hamiltonian containing a power divergence, we find that mresvm_{res}^v can be a source of a much bigger systematic error. To keep all systematic errors due to residual masses at the 1% level, we estimate that one needs amress103a m_{res}^s \le 10^{-3} and amresv105a m_{res}^v \le 10^{-5}, at a lattice spacing a0.1a\sim 0.1 fm. The practical implications are that (1) optimal use of computer resources calls for a mixed scheme with different domain-wall fermion actions for the valence and sea quarks; (2) better domain-wall fermion actions are needed for both the sea and the valence sectors.Comment: latex, 25 pages.     Epitaxial growth of Cu on Cu(001): experiments and simulations

    A quantitative comparison between experimental and Monte Carlo simulation results for the epitaxial growth of Cu/Cu(001) in the submonolayer regime is presented. The simulations take into account a complete set of hopping processes whose activation energies are derived from semi-empirical calculations using the embedded-atom method. The island separation is measured as a function of the incoming flux and the temperature. A good quantitative agreement between the experiment and simulation is found for the island separation, the activation energies for the dominant processes, and the exponents that characterize the growth. The simulation results are then analyzed at lower coverages, which are not accessible experimentally, providing good agreement with theoretical predictions as well.Comment: Latex document. 7 pages. 3 embedded figures in separate PS files.     Temperature in Fermion Systems and the Chiral Fermion Determinant

    We give an interpretation to the issue of the chiral determinant in the heat-kernel approach. The extra dimension (5-th dimension) is interpreted as (inverse) temperature. The 1+4 dim Dirac equation is naturally derived by the Wick rotation for the temperature. In order to define a ``good'' temperature, we choose those solutions of the Dirac equation which propagate in a fixed direction in the extra coordinate. This choice fixes the regularization of the fermion determinant. The 1+4 dimensional Dirac mass (MM) is naturally introduced and the relation: |4 dim electron momentum| \ll M|M| \ll ultraviolet cut-off, naturally appears. The chiral anomaly is explicitly derived for the 2 dim Abelian model. Typically two different regularizations appear depending on the choice of propagators. One corresponds to the chiral theory, the other to the non-chiral (hermitian) theory.Comment: 24 pages, some figures, to be published in Phys.Rev.
