Vortex nucleation in rotating BEC: the role of the boundary condition for the order parameter

We study the process of vortex nucleation in rotating two-dimensional BEC confined in a harmonic trap. We show that, within the Gross-Pitaevskii theory with the boundary condition of vanishing of the order parameter at infinity, topological defects nucleation occurs via the creation of vortex-antivortex pairs far from the cloud center, where the modulus of the order parameter is small. Then, vortices move towards the center of the cloud and antivortices move in the opposite direction but never disappear. We also discuss the role of surface modes in this process.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

Droplet size and nozzle tip pressure from a pulse-width modulation sprayer

    Get PDF
Pulse-width modulation (PWM) sprayers can improve application accuracy through flow control, turn compensation, and high-resolution overlap control by pulsing an electronically-actuated solenoid valve which controls the relative proportion of time each solenoid valve is open (duty cycle). The objective of this experiment was to identify the droplet size distribution and nozzle tip pressure when influenced by PWM duty cycle, nozzle technology, and gauge pressure to provide PWM guidelines. The experiment was conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel at the Pesticide Application Technology Laboratory using a SharpShooter® PWM system. In general, for non-venturi nozzles, as duty cycle decreased, droplet size slightly increased between 40 and 100% duty cycles. Conversely, venturi nozzles did not always follow this trend. The lowest duty cycle evaluated (20%) negatively impacted droplet size and caused inconsistencies for all nozzle by pressure combinations. The addition of a solenoid valve lowered nozzle tip pressure while gauge pressure remained constant indicating a restriction is present within the solenoid valve. Greater orifice sizes increased the pressure loss observed. Duty cycle minimally impacted nozzle tip pressure trends which were similar to the electrical square wave PWM signals. However, venturi nozzles deviated from this trend, specifically twin-fan, single pre-orifice venturi nozzles. In conclusion, venturi nozzles are not recommended for PWM systems as they may lead to inconsistent applications, specifically in regards to droplet size generation and nozzle tip pressures. Spray pressures of 276 kPa or greater and PWM duty cycles of 40% or greater are recommended to ensure proper PWM operation

The Yrast Spectra of Weakly Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates

The low energy quantal spectrum is considered as a function of the total angular momentum for a system of weakly interacting bosonic atoms held together by an external isotropic harmonic potential. It is found that besides the usual condensation into the lowest state of the oscillator, the system exhibits two additional kinds of condensate and associated thermodynamic phase transitions. These new phenomena are derived from the degrees of freedom of "partition space" which describes the multitude of different ways in which the angular momentum can be distributed among the atoms while remaining all the time in the lowest state of the oscillator

A Relational Event Approach to Modeling Behavioral Dynamics

This chapter provides an introduction to the analysis of relational event data (i.e., actions, interactions, or other events involving multiple actors that occur over time) within the R/statnet platform. We begin by reviewing the basics of relational event modeling, with an emphasis on models with piecewise constant hazards. We then discuss estimation for dyadic and more general relational event models using the relevent package, with an emphasis on hands-on applications of the methods and interpretation of results. Statnet is a collection of packages for the R statistical computing system that supports the representation, manipulation, visualization, modeling, simulation, and analysis of relational data. Statnet packages are contributed by a team of volunteer developers, and are made freely available under the GNU Public License. These packages are written for the R statistical computing environment, and can be used with any computing platform that supports R (including Windows, Linux, and Mac).

Vortex energy and vortex bending for a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

For a Bose-Einstein condensate placed in a rotating trap, we give a simplified expression of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy in the Thomas Fermi regime, which only depends on the number and shape of the vortex lines. Then we check numerically that when there is one vortex line, our simplified expression leads to solutions with a bent vortex for a range of rotationnal velocities and trap parameters which are consistent with the experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. submitte

Plant species roles in pollination networks: an experimental approach

    Get PDF
Pollination is an important ecosystem service threatened by current pollinator declines, making flower planting schemes an important strategy to recover pollination function. However, ecologists rarely test the attractiveness of chosen plants to pollinators in the field. Here, we experimentally test whether plant species roles in pollination networks can be used to identify species with the most potential to recover plant–pollinator communities. Using published pollination networks, we calculated each plant's centrality and chose five central and five peripheral plant species for introduction into replicate experimental plots. Flower visitation by pollinators was recorded in each plot and we tested the impact of introduced central and peripheral plant species on the pollinator and resident plant communities and on network structure. We found that the introduction of central plant species attracted a higher richness and abundance of pollinators than the introduction of peripheral species, and that the introduced central plant species occupied the most important network roles. The high attractiveness of central species to pollinators, however, did not negatively affect visitation to resident plant species by pollinators. We also found that the introduction of central plant species did not affect network structure, while networks with introduced peripheral species had lower centralisation and interaction evenness than networks with introduced central species. To our knowledge, this is the first time species network roles have been tested in a field experiment. Given that most restoration projects start at the plant community, being able to identify the plants with the highest potential to restore community structure and functioning should be a key goal for ecological restoration

Ground-State Properties of a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate with Attractive Interaction

The ground state of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional torus is studied in terms of the ratio γ\gamma of the mean-field interaction energy per particle to the single-particle energy-level spacing. The plateaus of quantized circulation are found to appear if and only if γ<1\gamma<1 with the lengths of the plateaus reduced due to hybridization of the condensate over different angular-momentum states.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Reveiw Letter

Episodic Memory Measures Complement Structural and Functional MRI for Predicting Cognitive Decline in Apolipoprotein E ε4 Carriers

    Get PDF
Apolipo-protein E (APOE) ?4 allele carriers demonstrate greater risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer\u27s disease than non-carriers. However, factors associated with risk of decline among APOE ?4 carriers are not well-known. In this longitudinal study, we investigated whether discrete aspects of baseline episodic memory performance and structural (sMRI) and function (fMRI) magnetic resonance imaging were associated with cognitive decline in older APOE ?4 carriers and non-carriers. Seventy-eight healthy older adults underwent cognitive testing at baseline and after 18 months, baseline serum APOE genotyping, manually-traced hip-pocampal volume measurement from sMRI, and task-activated fMRI. Cognitive decline was defined as a one SD or greater reduction from baseline on at least one of three cognitive measures at follow-up (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test [AVLT] Delayed Recall and Trials 1-5 Sum, Mattis Dementia Rating Scale-2 Total Score). Declining APOE ?4 carriers (n=14) exhibited reduced hippocampal volume (
